It's good that at least the players recognize how bad that was. I sure hope that's the spark they need.

Hmmm, they do have a DC coaching them up, and preparing them for the next game coming up right. The only problem/problems that it could be, they aren't understanding what is being taught them, or what they are being taught just isn't working out for them.
I know that it's been said many times that Wes Goodwin is a schematic genus, so maybe bc of his lack of hands on coaching on the field, is making it difficult for the player to grasp what he's saying to them, by the way he explains it to them bc, there has to be a problem in what's being related to the players bc the problems that the defense is having, it began this season.
I'm not questioning Goodwin's ability to scheme, and know what he's talking about, I question his ability to get what he does best across to his players with them completely understanding what he is attempting to teach them, it's his on hand coaching ability that I would question. Knowing what you're talking about is one thing, but teaching it to 18-19-20 year old young men that has been coached all their life another way could create an understanding gap....

With WG lack of on field experience as you stated and the players calling a players only meeting....I sure hope it's not a developing case of the players thinking they know more than the coachs.

Seriously… teams do this all the time. A lot of kids get complacent just hearing from coaches but when a teammate calls you out, especially when including himself it hits different. These types of meetings can be what’s needed to light a fire under these boys and push them to their potential

Maybe what Goodwin doesn't bring that BV did was pure passion. To light a fire under the players. When the guys and the coaches say the problem was tackling, or hitting the wrong gaps, it sounds like they know exactly what the problems are.
Going back to my days as a player and coach (basketball and not football, unfortunately), something you have to get your players to buy into is giving your all on every play. You might be thinking, "well who wouldn't do that?" and the answer is "the guys who are on the field who are trying to keep something in the tank for the next five plays." The starters have to go as hard as they can each play, even if they get winded faster and need to be replaced more frequently. If you give 80% each play so that you can stay on the field for every snap, you're cheating your team. Give 100% for 50% of the snaps, sit down, and the guy behind you can know he can give 100% for the downs where he's on the field.
It is important that you know that you can trust your backups, or else you'll revert to the 80% mindset. Think about XT winning ACC honors when he was on the field for six plays. That man was taking out a whole year worth of frustration and you better believe he went as hard as he could.
I think the defense ought to remember what kind of legacy there is on that side of the ball, most recently Isaiah Simmons who could play every position on the field. Power Rangers. Boulware. I could go on for hours. Play smart, play hard, give your all and save nothing for the next down.

Godwin’s “schemes” has actually been severely simplified versus what BV ran. It is really about lining up in the right spot, and then doing your job by fitting the right holes. Versus FSU, that didn’t happen. Huge holes were a common theme, and that is 100% on the player doing what they want to instead of their jobs. The calling of this meeting is encouraging as it is showing the ownership of needing to execute the plays called. The one thing that drove me nuts was the bend but don’t break coverage most of the night…but after the Wake Forest game you can’t blame him for that either.
I’m looking forward to this weekend…we will make a statement. Go Tigers!

I think it’s more of a lack of discipline and being out place along with the poor tackling that has been an issue. You have to put at least half of the blame on the players. At least they are taking ownership and plan to correct the issue.

They need to Gang Gang up. they play soft. They plays like girls on the defensive line. it's been 3 seasons now they can't hit the QB play after play after play. It's been 4 seasons they get shredded.
Man up and get out.

it's not moronic, do you not recall the many missed tackles of the last couple of games? I honestly began to think FSU was wearing Vaseline on their uniforms.
I've got nothing against players seeking to hold each other accountable and trying to motivate themselves. Also, seems we gave lacked player leadership in our defense.
Tgr 2nd half against NCSt, the middle of FSU...this is the kevel of performance weve all thought we could expect. But theyve been inconsistent and inconsistencies become more costly as season progresses. Because of this, the post was hardly moronic.

Our defense was the only reason we were in some games last year. The defense was on the field most of the game, injured, playing though injuries etc. Year before we are in the NC game. Yes some rough coverage in that game but you can’t say they were soft for the last four years. Simply a Moranic take. If you want to defend him go right ahead.

Clemson defense always struggled struggled when the opponents got good. Ya'll just drank the CoolAid after the 2018 Natty. Clemson got soft. And it shows.

Wait, so if I understand you, what you are saying is, better teams did better? Ohio State, Jawga, LSU held their own or outplayed the defense? Gosh, I wonder why.

Players only meetings are usually held to address issues involving effort or attitude. The players can say things to each other that coaches might be criticized for saying. These meetings generally either divide a group into factions or bring them closer together. With Clemson’s culture and players I believe this will bond the defense and we will see more fire and effort than we have all year. All I know for sure is I will be there Saturday doing my part to make Death Valley LOUD!! Go Tigers!!

By the way, I recall one of the players saying that coaches were included in this player called meeting. But I guess the players led the meeting. I'm glad coaches were included. This shows unity and players not blaming coaches.
GO TIGERS!
I look forward to seeing a rejuvenated defense Saturday.

This is where Venables is missed...

Schemes and pressures are essentially the same... the expectation and the intensity in Venables eyes is what kept the defense from lazy or sloppy play. There was a pride BV has in his D and what happened in Tallahassee wouldn't have happened.

I find it odd that you say that because while I was watching it all I could think of was how it was an identical repeat of the Texas A&M game from a few years ago when the defense fell flat in the second half.
We saw this under Venables a few times too. Hopefully Goodwin can get it corrected the way Venables seemed to.

Not the week to be guaranteeing a win or telling the media that y’all feel sorry for the Tigers. The defense came out of the fsu game embarrassed and angry. They were in a mission before the Syracuse players started mouthing off? Now they just got poked? Dumb dumb dumb. Speaks volumes of why Syracuse always ends up where this team will. I love that a team has confidence, but act like you’ve been there? Syracuse is 6-0, with amazing stats. Dig a little into those numbers and you see that they may have had the easiest 6 game start of the season of any team not in the sec?? Five home games? One away game that was at UConn? They get NC state after Clemson crushed their hopes and dreams for the season and after FSU cheap shotted their QB, basically ripping their hearts out?!?? Which of their wins is most impressive? Wagner?

The first step at getting better is the players themselves recognizing there’s an issue. I have no doubt they will notch it up this week against Syracuse.

We are winning and this meeting will only make us better. Nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if Oklahoma players called a players only meeting I'd be worried if that was my team.
