DJ was a top heisman candidate this time last year. We saw from 2 games in 2020 that he has all the talent and ability needed to win that award. If the supporting cast is healthy and plays like they should, this year could be huge for DJ.

Something always looked "off" for me on DJ's pass delivery,
Jul 20, 2022, 8:37 AM

but until I saw the side by side picture of this article, I couldn't pin it down.
Looking at Cade, he has his weight back, and is ready to use his whole body to deliver the ball on target, with velocity.
DJ is already leaned forward, his body is GONE as far as contributing anything to the throw, it will have to be "all arm".
Now, this may not mean anything to an actual QB coach, but it IS a fundamental difference between these two guys.

They are also in different parts of their delivery. I mean...that part is pretty obvious. Klubnik could still be going back with the football whereas DJ is already moving forward.
In other words, if both QBs were strip sacked right now, Klubnik's would be a fumble and DJ's would be an incomplete pass

Yes. Our WRs were bad last year, even when we were healthy. Then everyone got hurt and we finished with two freshmen and Will Swinney. We didn’t have Etienne to make people respect our running game at the beginning of the season.
DJ had the same accuracy issues, but his supporting cast was a lot worse.

Read the quotes carefully and you realize there is a lot of coach speak about DJ. He's doing better - Losing some weight - Working through some stuff - are not resounding compliments. These are things you say about a project guy. Go look at the things that were said about Watson and Lawrence during off-seasons.

Amazing how 2 people looking at the same thing happening before them see 2 very different things…the offense went from the penthouse in 20, to the outhouse in 21 as far as QB play is concerned. Fans better pray Klubnick can be decent or this amazing defensive group will be wasted again like last year because of DJ…

We have options this year. Another great defense and hopefully an offense that can at least function. I wish DJ the best however, if more of the same as last year - pull the trigger fast with a change. We must be able to pass, and our D can’t play 90% of the time with a run only offense.

To have the kind of offensive production (or lack of) we did last year it had to be a team effort. Poor QB, WR, and OL play. It was ugly, really ugly.
About the only positive was that we got a chance to get some young players some experience, mainly at RB and WR.
Sounds like DJ put in some effort this offseason, had the right attitude, and grew from the experience last year.
His finger and knee are better and he lost, what? 30 pounds? EJ and Ngata (and the addition of Spector though most here don't share my enthusiasm for him) stay healthy and DJ gets his head right we can do better on offense. Heck, it could hardly be worse than starting Will Sweeney at WR.
I am really hopeful anyway.
Oh, one more thing -we STILL hung 30 on the chickens with a 5' 2" Will Sweeney starting at WR. Suck it chickens! hahaha

Will was better WR last season than DJ at QB. FYI DJ putting up 30 on Roosters not very impressive. Cade and his high school team could have probably put up 50 plus

If DJ is starting QB this year. One thing I know for sure my Tigers will miss ACC title game and playoff series. Last season I learned after first game versus DJ was over his head. Even as bad as he played the defense almost recovered with 2 more wins making it to ACC title. One ACC rule that never should have been made was letting ACC play other ACC teams with extra ACC team where game doesn't count as conference game.

Agree Agree! All this coach speak on how well DJ is laughable and won't translate to gametime production on DJ's part. We saw a whole year where he couldn't read defenses, couldn't make good decisions, and couldn't throw accurately. He ain't gonna turn that around, folks. It's who he is.

DJ Uiagalelei to get better

So let me get this right. Cade Klubnik came in motivated and busting tail. He was not overweight. He's already motivating others including DJ who has lost up to 35 labs so far. He is more accurate than DJ. He is more mobile than DJ. He has picked up the Offense faster than DJ. He went to Elite 11 last year to compete against the best of the best QB's in the country (incl. Texas starter Q. Ewers) and to learn (a competition DJ declined) and he finished #1 in almost every event and #1 overall. He is a outgoing and wide open. Sounds like a young man who will be the starter soon.

DJ Hade no Competition Last Year

That's the only reason he started for the season. This year reminds me of KB vs. Trevor Lawrence. KB peaked in his abilities and that's the way I perceive DJ. If CK is "tied" with DJ at this point he'll be starting sooner than later.

Yes but sometimes Dabo drops the ball picking QBs. Totally wasted year starting KB at QB when Hunter better QB. KB with Defense kept us #1 in playoffs but against Alabama did was out of his dept. Like DJ against UGA he was out of his depth but Kirby was starting their wrong QB too. They fixed that switching QB and won Natty

Disagree. Hunter was not ready to start upon arrival. His eyes were still big, and he did not mature into the position as a true freshman. Klubnik is much further along than Hunter was ... KB was the best Clemson had in 2017. Dabo will make the right call this year as he did in 2017.

It's great that DJ is healthy and lighter and that the next Trevor is his backup, Cade. But the question remains and we will find out by ND, Can DJ not only read Defenses but more importantly keep Defenses from Reading DJ

If DJ needed the arrival of Cade to push him to get better, he may as well just leave.
After being so bad last year, I would hope DJ didn't need anything other than redemption as motivation for improving this year. Those two games as a freshman are dead and gone. Last year was his body of work.
From being 40+ lbs overweight, to being woefully inaccurate with the ball, to having the worst pocket presence I've seen in a long time, to locking into receivers and being far too easy for DBs to read, to [you name it], DJ has a laundry list of things to improve on. He certainly doesn't need the arrival of Cade Klubnik to push him to get better.
Just the thought of not improving massively over last year should be enough for DJ to push himself to the limit.

This is comical, to read those who believe that the DJ we seen in 2021 just totally forgot how to play football. As a true freshman he did things DW or TLaw didn't do, and then all of a sudden in 2021 he did not know how to play football anymore? How is all the these fans blind to the fact that we were playing 3rd and 4th string players around DJ who either couldn't execute for lack of talent, or due to inexperience? DJ as a first year starter made some mistakes dealing with the inexperience and ineptitude of the offense, He admits as much as well as the coaches. But Dabo has said many times "We were not very good around him, and we have to be better to be successful." Why does anyone believe that with healthy and experienced player(s) at the skill positions we will not see the same DJ we seen in 2020? The coaches who see DJ every play of practice, every play on the field, in the film room, in team meetings, and team events, believe in him and like me expect to see the DJ we seen in 2020. I trust Dabo and his decisions, the man has earned it with 150 total wins, 11 (10 win) seasons, 7 ACC Championships, 6 playoff appearances, and 4 National Championship games, with 2 National Championship wins. So if he says DJ is the starter and expects him to prove it on the field, that is good enough for me. This offense will be a top 10 offense this season if it stays healthy. If we have to play true freshmen again this year it will be much like last year all over again.
