time to make my move...DirecTV DVR got fried friday

well, at least the HDMI out isn't working after that thunderstorm...not sure if it had anything to do w/ that, or just coincidence, but whatever...
I've got an 'offer' (as in, I've already spoken to them) for DISH TV for some mid-range package that seems to have most of the channels we want, the Hopper thing, and 2 other boxes....for like $65/mo +/-...I'm (stupidly )paying $108 for the same level DirecTV package, w/ less 'technology'...
Do I make the move to DISH, or try to haggle for a similar/lower price & New equip from DirecTV???

i pay $30/mo for 30mb Charter Cable internet...been several months, but so far so good....none of the probs I had w/ them a few years back
so, if I could get the $65 deal +the $30 for interwebs, thats $90...then again, i don't get ANY movie channels/packages...i have other means for that

advice: like you, my DirecTV DVR got fried this summer

I called them for a replacement. Turns out that you build up "points" or "stars" with them with being with them a while, paying your bills on time, etc. I had 5 stars or somesuch built up, making me a "preferred" customer.
So they told me I was eligible for an equipment upgrade to the newest whole-house Genie system at no charge - all equipment, on all TVs. Even a new improved dish. So I went with this and it is LIGHT YEARS better. And my bill dropped $10.
At least you should make the call and see what they'll do for you.

I am thinking about making the switch as well. Time Warners playing with politics and constantly raising prices is not making me happy. Do they have to come out and run new wires and all that jazz? Do they charge for installation of the dish?
I am not all that tech savvy with TV's.
Also, how mush extra for pron channels that are hidden in a special menu away from my wife?

I just had whole home HD DVR installed for free!

I've been with DirecTV for 13 years. They replaced very single piece of equipment on my property...dish, LNB, new stand (on my roof), Genie, 3 mini Genies, new coaxial cables, and numerous other pieces of equipment (that I would affectionately call "do-hickeys") as an upgrade to non-HD DVR service.
DirecTV will get my business. Hopper is pretty cool. Genie requires coaxial cable between the large Genie box and each of the mini-Genies, Hopper is wireless. My sister has Dish, it looks similar (in function, but it's wireless). I cannot accurately compare. YMMV.

directly from the main box to the lil'guys? Or, just the fact that it's neccessary for them all to be hooked into the same system?

Sorry, didn't see your question until now...

It's an interesting set-up. The whole Co-axial set-up is powered (at what voltage{?}). The co-ax comes in from the LNB, then splits out to all of the eguipment (Genie + mini-genies). They are all connected in an isolated system in your home.
So, to answer your question - each box (Genie and Mini-Genies) has a coaxial cable coming from the wall. A new system set-up will require installation of new cable drops inside the walls. Easy peasy lemon squeasy on a single level home with attic access and/or crawl space...not so easy on a multi-level abode.
I hope this helps.

We just changed to Direct after several years with Dish. We got the Genie and are really enjoying it more than Dish. If you call Direct and tell them that you are changing to Dish, they will offer you a substantial discount to stay. The audio/visual guy that I use told me that I should play that game every 2 years.
