What's Wrong with Tomlin?

Goes with an onside kick and then doesn't call a TO before the two-minute warning.

doesn’t look too cool... and that onside kick was awful. They would have been better off pinning Jax deep and trying to get a stop on D. Bad coaching.

I’m afraid you’re right. It should have been far more embarrassing in which case there may have been a way. More seemingly promising but ultimately disappointing years to come.

Have to kick it off there. Call both of your time outs before the warning and you effectively get a timeout after each down. You ball at the 30 with 1:50ish left....

Can blame him for the onside kick decision, but not his time out management. The 2 minute warning was only 15 seconds away. It was the right call to let the clock run until the 2 minute warning and save his time outs for second and third downs, which saved more time than 15 seconds.

It was 4th down at 1:50. If he used both timeouts before the two-minute warning. Would've been 4th down at or just under 2:00. Those 8-10 seconds could've been crucial.

This assumes the two successive plays, undoubtedly running plays, would have taken almost zero seconds to run. I believe it would have been under 2 minutes by that time.

run-off after their 1st down play, especially one that had such a short gain. When you're talking 120 seconds or under, 8-10 is a big deal. That could be 2 plays later.

When they cut it to 28-21, he didn’t do a thing until they were down double digits again. Agree it’s poor coaching, you have to realize when your QB is thinking more about retirement than the game at hand.

I believe that’s the right question. In my view Mike Tomlin has more support around him from an exceptional organization than any other coach in football. When you examine the Steelers’ deficiencies it often boils down to attention to detail, discipline, and carelessness with the football. Managing those elements is his responsibility and his alone.
