after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 12:52 AM

I could not help but think of the potential of this team if we had an Oline like that going into 2014. I am going to go on a limb and say that I see few scenarios where Morris would leave after this year.. With Guys like Tyshon Dye and Adam choice coming in next year, we could really prosper under read option attack with a guy Like Chad Kelly at the wheel, taking a lot of pressure off our passing game.

But here is the big if, with Brandon Thomas and Tyler Shatly leaving, do we have the horses waiting in the wings to build a dominant line going into next year?

I say this because a lot of people thought this would be our year, but I can not help but look at what we have retuning on Defense under year 3 of Venables to believe that we could make a huge run if we were able to put together a ground game like Auburn had this year.

As I understand it...

Nov 17, 2013, 12:57 AM

our PPG and YPG are higher than Auburn's because of our superior QB/WR play. (also, we still rush at about 150-160yarsds a game which isn't that bad)

Just like I'm sure Auburn fans would love to have our WRs or QB's passing ability to go along with their running we would like to have their Oline.

But to your question, for whatever reason Oline play is a constant problem with our program every year and I can't see that changing for a few years.

More importantly, having a TRUE running threat in a QB who also has the ability to pass will negate many issues with not having a stellar Oline. I hope Kelly/Watson will be that next year.

Next year we are going to struggle early on offense but still have the potential to be great, just not as explosive in the passing game. What will be fun to watch is how good our defense could be next year.

Toughest games (outside of FSU/USC):
@BC, @GT

good points, but dont get lulled into ypg when we have been unable to put teams away in the 2nd half this year. I attribute this to our inability to Finish a game with a dependable ground game. Heck, we could finish games on the ground last year, what changed?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By not "finish" teams off?

Nov 17, 2013, 1:12 AM

Do you mean keep them from scoring garbage points? That's a problem, but in no way a major one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: By not "finish" teams off?

Nov 17, 2013, 1:28 AM

garbage points in the UGA game easily could have been a loss for us had the ball bounced differently. And against the jackets, had we dropped a couple of those deep balls or turned it over, things could have been different.

I just have no patience for our inability to put teams away this year, and I blame that more on our ground game than our defense.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm with you on the running game, but what games are you

Re: I'm with you on the running game, but what games are you

we had a rough time putting NCState and Maryland Away,

I guess there are worse problems to have.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never bought into that thinking...

Nov 17, 2013, 1:33 AM [ in reply to Re: By not "finish" teams off? ]

because sure by us not scoring points or the other team scoring more points we lose. That just makes sense. When we've needed it (BC game) we have finished very strong and if you remember we ran the ball very effectively at the end of the UGA game.

The garbage points usually are in the last 5min of a game and the team is up by 21+ and are already celebrating on the sidelines. I wouldn't say that's much of a problem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I've never bought into that thinking...

Nov 17, 2013, 1:42 AM

I guess the way I see it, but we have to break in a new QB next year, so the ground game has to be more dependable. By virtue of the backs we have at at our disposal in '14, it will be a step up.. Still, A massive improvement in our run blocking will go a long way in determining the season we have next year.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

100% agree with that.

Nov 17, 2013, 1:47 AM

I think next year we'll look more like this year's Auburn team, but with slightly better passing. Losing Boyd and Watkins is going to hurt, and Kelly/Watson aren't the passer Boyd is. HOWEVER, we do have a very good chance of running the ball more effectively if for no other reason we will actually be running some zone read option.

Next year will be interesting because most of the questions on the team will be surrounding the offense, for the first time in a long time. (Even more so if Morris leaves)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know about Watson yet, but Kelly has shown some

very good zip on the ball and accuracy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 100% agree with that.

Nov 17, 2013, 1:53 AM [ in reply to 100% agree with that. ]

we have a ton returning up front on defense, and a lot of young, physical DB's that should be pushing the "starters". If we can do a better job of controlling the clock and not have to depend so much on throwing over the top to score points, then I do not think we take a step back.

I like stoudt, but if we can put a good line in front of Kelly, it could get sick.

I am a huge fan of Adam choice BTW, he will fit right in.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed. Zone read could be huge.***

exactly, put Kelly behind a good line with choice and dye in the backfield, and the Chad could open up the playbook a little more next year. I am also excited to see the young TE's help us improve as well.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 17, 2013, 9:13 AM [ in reply to As I understand it... ]

regardless of how much O line improvement Morris can squeeze out. Stoudt or Kelly or both will play much differently. We've got the potential of having many more running options. Brooks may stay healthy and breakout. Tyshon Dye will get a chance to show his stuff. Oglesby comes in and could play (or not). Same for Adam Choice.

And then there is the existing plus new receiving talent.

If Leggett gets his head on straight we could even see improvement in TE next year.

I'm less worried about our potential next year than I am about our execution. Since there will be a new QB whether a senior or not (Stoudt versus the others), and some of our better talent will be new - but not all - we could start off slow.

Yes, the line could be better. But it doesn't have to be the show stopper if you keep a mobile QB like Kelly as an option on a bad day.

Re: after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 12:58 AM

Auburn has recruited very well on the O line the last few years. Actually they have done very well on both sides of the line. Chizik recruited a lot of talent, he just screwed it up.

I would rather us get out of the Pistol formation though if we are going to run the zone read effectively. I would rather have the Running back off to the side of the QB when running the zone read.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 1:02 AM

you have to keep in mind that the pistol was a result of not having the horses up front. Morris would love to complement his aerial attack with a smash mouth running game.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 1:12 AM

I understand about a weak OL but I thought and I could be wrong but Morris wanted to go to the pistol because the RB is hidden behind the QB and it delays the read the defense can make because the direction the RB makes is briefly hidden. I may not have worded that appropriately. I also remember Ellington last year saying it helped disguise the direction he was going with the ball.

So I guess that is a mis direction but it seems with the RB lined off to the side of the QB you can do many more things for a misdirection standpoint.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 1:19 AM

agree, even Bama ran some pistol early in the year. But Ault ran that at Nevada as an equalizer against disruptive Dlines amd as I recall it really helped us against VT and FSU last year. Correct me if I am wrong, But I thought we ran read out of the pistol where more often than not, Boyd would hold onto the ball as a designed draw.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: after watching Auburn play today

Nov 17, 2013, 1:49 AM

I wish I could correct you but you are probably right but I get so disgusted sometimes with morris trying to run little Hot Rod up the middle with a line that gets no push that I try and forget about some of our run plays. No doubt Hot Rod runs hard, I just think he is more successful when he cuts outside. Of course I'm sure we do or try and run the read and Boyd keeps it but I just feel that we have more options if the RB is off to the side of the QB. I'm repeating myself at this point so I will stop :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My opinion based on what I think I've seen is that Hot Rod

Nov 17, 2013, 1:53 AM

has some of his best yardage on the plays right up the gut. Seems to work well in creating some quick holes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not so sure about your pistol assessment....

Nov 17, 2013, 1:34 AM [ in reply to Re: after watching Auburn play today ]

The benefit of the pistol is that handoffs are closer to the LOS than in the shotgun and they can be run to any side of the center, or play action and throw.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think

Nov 17, 2013, 1:02 AM

We have the chance to be really good again next year. Dabo's habit of puttin the back ups in early will reap dividends next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think

Nov 17, 2013, 1:05 AM

good point, but we could really help our inexperienced QB's if we had a legit ground game. We definitely had to lump too much on Boyd's shoulders this year because we struggled handing the ball off.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think

Nov 17, 2013, 1:13 AM

A more dominant ground game would help.

And no knock on Boyd as he is effective running the football at times, a more elusive QB would help even more as well I think.

this IS our year

Nov 17, 2013, 7:00 AM

We're 9-1 about to be 10-1 and I like our chances of being 11-1 and then 12-1.

No, we're not going to win the ACC or the BCS title game, but I'll take any 10+ win season as "our year". What we have right now is pretty special. I'm enjoying it.

I get your point about the OL and agree I don't see the Chad leaving just yet. As I have said previously, as long as we keep our coaching staff in place our trajectory is up and UP.
