You can call me a moron for posting on the wrong board all you want. This is about football because it happened outside of the spring game.
Student Republicans were across the street from the stadium handing out information about a local candidate for the house. Two university officials confronted them and told them athletics did not want them handing out literature. They were asked to leave because they were soliciting. The students were very respectful and the university officials called over a cop and the cop in his own way tried to intimidate the students. The cop ran their drivers licenses. They were NOT soliciting.
Clemson has been permeated by the rot that has infected every campus in America. Oh, by the way I forgot to mention that a lgbtq group was nearby doing the same thing and nothing was said to them.

An answer might be to have areas of campus where anyone can distribute information and the rest where nobody can. In that way those areas could be sought out or avoided as visitors wished.

It’s pathetic. I’ve made my third trip to academia lately to tack on another degree let in life. Discourse is the soul of academia. Hearing every point of view and thought process brings understanding. Instead I see far left liberals (think communist) pushing their agenda and squelching any competing ideas. Even the text books idealize communism as the 10th level of enlightenment and are pushing it as our destination. The stops include socialism which is touted as the 8th level of enlightenment. They claim we’ve achieved socialism. I always argue we are a free market economy with a strong socially conscious component. Think roads, Medicare, SS disability, and so on. My point is, they’re rigging the game for one side. I’m an independent that identifies as a Libertarian. Of course my lean is conservative but I am sympathetic to some moderate ideals. We should hear all sides of the argument and make up our own minds. Not be force-fed “tolerance” by the most intolerant people I’ve ever met. I’ve seen professors fail people that disagreed with them taking their five-year-old son to drag queen story hour. I keep my political views to myself in the classroom. Just play their game and get my degree.

there is a video of the whole thing, they were told they had to leave by the school and the officer. The kids were very respectful, the cop was asked to clarify "soliciting" and he did not, he told them they were violating school policy ( he could not specify what policy, just soliciting) and they had to stop. They asked what they were doing wrong and got vague answers. Kinda sketchy encounter. Cops could have done a way better job here.
FWIW they were across the street to the south of the stadium, were handing out campaign material.
And no I do not want rows of campaign groups going into games... any more than I want to see Palestinian protestors.

The university already apologized and said that the event staff acted improperly and that they were not school employees. The students were not actually made to leave, and they continued handing out literature until the end of the game.

Soliciting votes for a candidate, which likely included donation info. Maybe you want to buy what they're selling, but it doesn't change that action as soliciting.
Like this post on the sports board, athletic events should be free of politics - plenty of other areas to drown in the fear and loathing efforts of the angry crowd.

With you on clarity as to how 'soliciting' is defined in terms of people working gameday crowds to sell something to attendees. The University statement mentioned their right to be there and supported the open exchange of ideas, yet does this allow them to pass out literature, i.e. solicitations, for a specific candidate for political office, or solicitation for funds via donation links?
I'm not assuming either side of the equation here was wrong. The university's rules around 'solicitation' at sporting events would dictate who was actually in error. Doesn't sound like anyone is getting fired over it and they are looking to better inform all parties going forward as to what exactly this restriction entails.

This was at the spring game and it was disgusting how it was handled but the university has put out a statement (I posted it below) and clarified that what they were doing was an expression of free speech and should not have been stopped
"During Saturday’s spring football game, an incident occurred in which a student organization was improperly asked to curtail an exercise of free speech. This isolated occurrence has been addressed both with the student organization, which will not face any sanctions or discipline, as well as with security personnel. We will continue to educate both University employees as well as contracted security personnel on the rights and policies regarding free speech on Clemson’s campus.
As a campus community, we recognize our role as a marketplace for the exchange of ideas and support the right for students to assemble and express their views"

I had a long conversation with the Clemson President a few years back re: why Clemson University employed openly Communist professors to spout their drivel to our children day in and day out, teaching them things we do not believe in, at the expense of the state and donors. We paid for this crap using our tax dollars. His replay was something to the effect that all points of view are encouraged at Clemson University. What a lame way of thinking! If openly teaching Communism to our kids is considered education, which it obviously is, then we are doomed as a society. These idiot educators will rot our country from within while we sit by and allow it in the name of freedom of thought and diversity. It is just so sad!

Imagine every time you go a baseball, softball, soccer or football game there were two hundred people all lined up wanting to pester you with literature for political candidates. The other consideration is because the funding for a state school comes from the legislature, all schools know know who supports them and who does not so maybe the candidate was running against a big supporter. Have to dodge political supporters is not my idea of trying to get into a game. By the way, basketball was not mentioned because it is after the elections.

It did have to do with them being Republican. The LGBTQ "protest" in the same general vicinity was not told to cease or disperse.

I have watched the video and spent time calming down before I posted. What the H#$l are contract employees doing making a decision without getting confirmation from a university employee? This all rolls back to the university President. I am tired of seeing Clemson University in the news for the wrong reasons. Clements needs to get a handle on things and fast. If Clemson needs to setup a space for groups to have their tables setup then fine. Who in their right mind would think that it is ok to ask a group to shutdown while allowing another stay is beyond me. The folks that interacted with the students need to be banned from working on Clemson University property.

Regardless of one’s political affiliation or beliefs, we all have to follow the same laws. Law enforcement has to enforce those laws. That’s just the way it is.
I’m not clear on what South Carolina and federal law here is. That said, the law typically treats political parties and their supporters differently from civil rights organizations. There is a Republican Party whose job it is to raise money, put people in office, and make policy that we all have to follow (like it or not). As you describe it, these students were acting as representatives of that political party. Therefore, they are legally a political group soliciting political support on State property. That’s typically not allowed on any State land.
The LGBTQ group you refer to us a civil rights organization without any power except the power of protest. They are typically allowed to protest on government/public property so long as they have a permit.
These are the laws we all live by. I don’t think it’s disgusting to enforce the law. But, I acknowledge that there is a large contingent of Americans who think differently, and that the law should apply differently to different people. This has been a line of social and political thought since the founding of our country, and the civil rights movement(s) arose to oppose that line of thinking. For example, when I was young, my Mom could not get a credit card when my Dad could. That’s just one small example of something that civil rights protests have helped to change.

I agree with your first two sentences. I am going to continue this response as it relates to football. The folks that interacted with the student group were evidently wrong because the university has stated as much and apologized. Clemson AD needs to have their ducks in a row before the first football games starts. College campuses are ground zero for protests right now. Memorial Stadium is a well known sports venue and will be a potential spot for bussed in protestors to get on tv this fall. Clemson and other southern universities had better be ready. People that are interacting with the various groups need to check their own personal beliefs at the door and follow the law. Clemson may want to borrow a page out of the Augusta National’s playbook. Does anyone on here remember Martha Burk? She wanted a woman admitted as a member to Augusta National and was going to lead a protest during Masters week. Augusta implemented a protest zone that protestors had to remain in or be arrested. There was no way that the protestors would get near Magnolia Lane. If legal, Clemson could have an area designated for groups to hand out material and protest.

2. Cop was being stupid, too, and should have known the law well enough to explain it to the campus officials and leave the students alone.
