This class made me break out the Pappy
Dec 20, 2017, 8:48 PM

For those of you that are whiskey drinkers and can appreciate the finer things in life, I have a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old bourbon that I got before the current astronomical prices that I only bring out for special occasions. Sipping on some right now to celebrate this awesome class...cheers!

If whisky drinker here! I’ve been wanting a bottle of Pappy for a long time but can’t find it, and if I can the price is tripple or even 10 times more than the amount that’s advertised on their website.

I'm somewhat of a boubon geek, and have a decent collection. Bourbon has become the next big thing in booze in the last few years, and pappy is the most sought after one. If ya didn't get any a few years ago when it was still obtainable, the only way to get it now (if you don't want to pay 10 to 20 times MSRP) is to enter a store lottery or know someone...that's why I'm consuming what I have sparingly, because I probably won't get anymore for a long time.

Old Weller Antique ain't a half bad 1st cousin

In fact, it's supposedly the same juice, but aged slightly differently. Nowhere near as pricey, but getting harder to find in its own right.
I've heard that proofing it down with limestone water (or just using straight Weller Reserve) and aging in a 1 liter barrel is about as close as mortally possible to the real thing.

For us mere mortals, here's a couple more, outside of Wellers/Buffalo, that might just take the edge off that PVW longing... Makers 46 and Four Roses Single Barrel. Although unwheated, it is higher rye than their standard.

I would drink it neat... something that rare you don’t want to ruin and mix. But my regular go to with coke is Woodford Reserve or John J Bowman.

There was actually a bar in Louisville that made jello shots with the 15 year to kinda make light of the hysteria...they lost their allocation as punishment.

Wonder if you could get it in Kentucky at the Buffalo Trace distillery??? They have tours and also have the product. Interesting I shall investigate further.

That's where it's made and aged under contract to the Van Winkles. It's not sold there though, it's allocated to stores and resturants.

I’ve been trying to find some Blanton’s here in the Greenville area. After calling around yesterday one store had one bottle left and the guy hinted it would be about $120. Not trying to spend quite that much. Any suggestions fellow bourbon or whiskey geeks?

I’d definitely spend $80. $120 seemed outrageous. It’s just hard to track down and most stores don’t know when they’re going to get any

$80 was outrageous to me. Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel is $60 or Elijah Craig Barrel Proof for $65-70.

Not a big fan of the Eagle Rare, but EC small batch is good stuff.
My go-to mid priced bottle would have to be Four Roses single barrel. Very smooth and consistently unique in flavor from each bottle.

I wish. Used to have a nice cigar with my bourbon, but as I've gotten older it really wrecks my sinuses...yeah, I know you don't inhale cigar smoke, but even the inadvertent inhalation of the 2nd hand smoke does a number on me.

Just run on up to Glassy Mountain and you can probably find some that has just been doubled back. Be sure and request a Mason jar, anything less would be undignified.
