Dawes didn’t transfer for any negative reasons

Apr 6, 2022, 8:41 PM

He has an extremely close relationship with former St. Peter’s and current Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway, and he is from NJ. He’s returning home and going to play for a man he loves, nothing negative towards Clemson… expect him to sign with Seton Hall soon.

Holloway recruited Dawes hard when Holloway was an assistant at Seton Hall.

Seton Hall is less than 5 miles from Dawes’s home in New Jersey.

As you said, it was nothing bad about Brownell or our program - as much as some people here want it to be.

This instance and what happened at LSU and other places are prime examples that the whole lacking facilities excuse has been just that , an excuse. Players go and stay maninly because of a relationship or lack thereof with a head coach.

Brad doesn’t have the ability to go out and recruit better players because of Brad, not Clemson. I’m not even arguing Brad should be fired anymore because I’ve sort of grown numb to Brads lack growth as a coach.

I think Clemson basketball basically has battered wife syndrome. They’ve been told so long you can’t be good at Clemson, they actually believe it themselves now.

If you are correct (your not) then we wasted $150M on the football program. FWIW relationships are important but so are facilities. It shows the recruit the school prioritizes the program. This is especially true when a program has no history of competing for championships or putting guys in the league.

At this point I would think we should prioritize a strong NIL for basketball as the next step. We could fire CBB but would likely hire a SoCon level coach then the entire team oould be in the portal. If we hire an experienced coach they will require an NIL program so why not go ahead and put it in place. Or we could do nothing but whine on t- net but that does not seem to be working

I hate wading into the nonsense that is mens basketball and the subsequent pizzing contests, but how low can we set the bar? He’s been on Clemson’s roster for three years and it’s the only place he’s ever played college basketball but don’t be surprised because he really liked this other guy? Brownell has been his head coach for three years. Is he not expected to form some level of a bond over three years (plus the time they were recruiting him)? Brad can’t be expected to compete because Holloway “recruited Dawes hard when he was a Seton Hall assistant”? THAT’S where the bar is set?

Well, he probably didn't sign with St. Peter's because Shaheen Holloway was still an assistant coach at Seton Hall at the time. And he may not have signed with Seton Hall because Shaheen Holloway was still only an assistant at Seton Hall then. And he probably signed with Clemson because it was an ACC school that was closer to its prime under Brad Brownwell (recent success with Sweet 16 berth in NCAA Championship).

Now, he's going to be very close to his home in NJ, and apparently, has a close relationship with his former Seton Hall recruiter. Seton Hall also has had a decent history of berths in the NCAA tournament through the years. Sounds like plenty of reasons for a transfer whether his outlook for next season at Clemson was good or bad!

Re: Dawes didn’t transfer for any negative reasons

Apr 7, 2022, 7:53 AM

Seton Hall has been to the NCAA tournament 14 times, compared to Clemson participating 13 times. Prior to Brownell's tenure at Clemson, Clemson had been to the tournament 10 times compared to Seton Hall's 9. Seems pretty similar to me, with the exception of SH making it to the final game one time back in 1989.

Located in a basketball hotbed. Also located four miles from Al-Amir’s home.

Despite all that, this was more about him wanting to play a season with his hero, Shaheen Holloway.

Just because he doesn’t have an acrimonious reason for leaving doesn’t mean it is “nothing negative” towards Clemson. Your senior most player, second leading scorer, and team leader in minutes played opting out of his senior season is not a good look.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dude, I’m not trying to

Apr 7, 2022, 1:01 PM

I’m responding to the question and asking in return how this could possibly be an argument. I think we’ve kept our discourse civil of late. No, I do not believe that Brownell would tell one of his most important returning players to take a look at other programs. 7 players had the lion’s share of minutes played. There is a big drop in minutes played between Bohannon and Hemenway. Prior to Dawes announcement, Brownell was already losing his 3rd, 5th, and 7th most productive players. With this large a gap to fill, does it make sense that he would suggest that his 2nd most productive player leave also. And obviously he intends to replace most of this via the portal since our freshman got virtually no experience this year. He needs to find a minimum of 4 players in the portal capable of starting if needed and playing an excess of 20 minutes a game. There is little reason to believe anyone on the roster below this years top 7 is really going to effectively do that. Maybe Hemenway.

So, my question back to you is why would you think that this would be a thing that Brownell would do under these circumstances?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Viz,

Apr 7, 2022, 1:13 PM

I apologized to you for our discourse privately and now will do so publicly. I apologize for trolling years past and I haven’t in quite some time.

Thank you for your response.

To answer your question, I don’t necessarily believe that is the case here or with any of his transfers. I was only asking if you had considered if that was possible given he is going into his senior year, didn’t perform necessarily as well as we would have liked and also considering Neff’s and Brad’s position that we’ve got to recruit better. I get your point on production though wondered if there are transfers that may relegate him to the bench his final year. I would like to think that Brad would treat his players with this level of respect given the circumstance existed. I’m not as savvy as some here on recruiting or even his best approach to what he has now vs incoming freshman as well as possible transfers (in). I apologize additionally if you thought this was my asking in a effort to discredit your argument. I was genuinely asking as if we were sitting at a bar watching our tigers play together. Be well.

So if he is transfering too because of personal reasons? kind of qoiencidence that both players who wanted to move closer to home were the PGs who got all the minutes? Superficially, ok.
But - are you saying that a coach who recruited him for a few months years ago - has a better relationship with him then the coach who has coached him for 3 full years?
Are you saying that the players and friends he has lived with, practiced, fought in games with, etc - are not important enough for him to finish the journey with?
We are not talking about a bench guy looking for playing time.
We are not talking about a one year player.
We are not talking about a troubled player.
We are talking about a player who just saw the other point guard leave.
Not committed? If not, why not?

Does not make sense to me.

Re: Think thru this with me,

I think there is some merit to what you are saying, but you are discounting the mentality of today's athlete. When someone sticks it out, like a Cornell Powell, it's seen as "old-school." Loyalty just simply doesn't exist.

Now, the relationship with Brownell might not be great. A player might love the coach during recruiting but find out that they don't like the coaching style, etc.

You ask why he stuck it out for three years. Possibly he didn't see an improvement elsewhere until Holloway took the job at Seton Hall.

There can be a balance that he enjoyed his time at Clemson but has the opportunity to move closer to home and play in a quality basketball conference for a coach that he really likes.

It’s amazing that in an obviously contrived, made up way of attempting to run cover for Brad Brownell these folks are actually running him over with the bus. No one with any basketball iq thinks you run off your second best player BEFORE you secure his replacement and that replacements backup. Even if you do manage to get 2 players better than Dawes you still leave it up to him to make the move. You don’t tell to pack up his locker. It’s beyond stupid. Honestly it shows how low iq his pumpers are. This narrative makes no sense whatsoever.
