If it wasn’t for Dabo, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

If it wasn't for Dabo, Conn wouldn't be either. He'd be coaching HS football where he should be.

What makes you say that? I'm not huge Mickey Conn fan but he started the Grayson HS football program from scratch and made them state champs in the strongest HS fb division in GA which is on par with TX and FL in terms of talent and competition. He seems to be a pretty good recruiter in his own right. Bates is a fine FB coach and also a good recruiter but check his coaching resume. It ain't all that either.

It is amazing how some of you are such experts on coaching abilities that you have the right to say an assistant coach should still be in high school. Some of the greatest coaches in history started in high school and moved up through the ranks. In working football camps while I was a high school coach, #### Sheridan and Jimmy Satterfield were the best teachers of fundamentals and strategy that I ever worked with. They were great high school coaches and college coaches. The arrogance of people on this blog concerning their so-called expertise of the Clemson situation amazes me. I say Dabo has forgotten more about football than most of you will ever know.

If the man got paid more money and getting a promotion then let him go and be happy for him. I believe Dabo did the best thing for Clemson. Dabo may have known he would leave and this could have been Dabos plan.

Read between the lines here guys. Dabo always does the best thing for Clemson. If he brings in or promotes someone he knows well, it is being done for the best.

Conn was an ultra successful HS head coach

who organized and built the program from scratch. Wes is pretty clearly a schematic wunderkind but has never organized a team. Conn has done that, and done it well.
So you match up the schematic guru with the guy with the best organizational skills. That wasn't Bates.

Bates did not get the job because Dabo believed Conn and Goodwin would be the best for Clemson. As a result, he decided to go to Oklahoma. Brent gave him a Co title to make him happy and so he could pay him a little more money.

Todd Bates coached the d-line and was recruiting coordinator the last two years. Our recruiting has dropped off, especially this year and most notably d-line. We missed on several key targets this year that we usually land. Maybe this change is not as bad as we are making it out to be.

I don’t like any of my college buddies now as a 40 year old adult. Don’t talk to any of them either. If they are qualified and good for his future I imagine that’s why he hired them or promoted them.

Never hurts to promote someone you trust and feel is loyal. Maybe CDS just felt Conn was more loyal and would work better with Wes

the shakeup down the chain doesn’t surprise me one bit. I like Bates, but there are guys that can recruit as well if not better. It’s a good job that I believe Nick Eason would crush.

I keep going back to what I saw on the board of what Shaw said. He did not want to say much but what I gathered was that he did not come to Clemson because of Bates. This was the DL we were recruiting out of NC that went to NC.

Assuming he wants to continue to progress in his career
Jan 3, 2022, 9:56 PM

then I am sure he wasn't happy about it.
Bates has been a college coach for 11 years, including 5 years at Clemson.
Conn has been a college coach for 6 years, all at Clemson.
Goodwin has been a college coach for 7 years, all at Clemson.
So even though both Conn and Goodwin have been at Clemson slightly longer than Bates, neither have been college coaches as long as he has. Neither has the recruiting experience at the college level that Bates does either.
We can debate all day whether or not Bates was more or less qualified than Conn and Goodwin to be DC, but regardless, Dabo made his choice. I would be surprised if Bates is fine with Dabo's decision, unless he just wants to be a position coach for the rest of his career.
I don't blame Dabo for making the decision he felt was best, nor do I fault Bates for making a change as a result.

If Dabo can hire a coach like Dan Brooks in his first year as a HC with basically no experience, I think he can find the right man for the job. Brooks was the best DL coach in Clemson history imo.
Good look to Bates. Go find your next great DL coach Dabo.

It is understandable. With Co-DCs, two people have to move on before he gets promoted or probably even interviewed for a DC job. Nick Eason should be a plus.

I think you have to lay the paucity of recruits, the zero DTs, and the failure to advocate right at Bates’ feet. Sounds to me like he was given every opportunity to leave with class.
