RB recruiting

Spiller went 0-4 last year.
We’ve offered 3 so far in 2023. Richard Young, Justice Haynes, and Cedric Baxter. Young just announced a top 7 and Clemson didn’t make the cut. That makes him 0-5 now.
If we miss on Haynes and Baxter, I wouldn’t be surprised to see us throw an offer to Jarvis Green from Dutch Fork, like we did Keith Adams Jr. last year.
Not great.

He needs at least 2 of the 3 premiere backs we have to show out this year. Build the resume of his NFL worthy players and get them to the league.
TE sent a few guys which tended to reflect the caliber of recruit we brought in. 2 fresh guys need to prove themselves.
But overall, I agree with you. Need a boost

If we sign our last resort RB back to back years then I can’t help but to view CJ as a poor recruiter.

If we sign our last resort RB back to back years then I can’t help but to view CJ as a poor recruiter.
I mean, can we really assess CJs recruiting ability based on the depth at RB currently?
I bet we get a RB or 2 we want if our offense shows out better than last year.
NGL -- outside of purely Loving Clemson football if I were a potential RB recruit, I'd have a hard time wanting to sit a minimal of 1-2 years as a reserve player trying to earn more carries.
As it looks currently:
1A) KP -- JR 1B) WS -- SO 1C) PM -- SO
So, in a perfect world, I wait maybe one year as a reserve player to get a chance to compete for a starting spot.
Realistically, it could be 2 years assuming WS OR PM don't jump early to the draft (I imagine one of these two probably use their SR year to show out).
Of course, we could certainly pull another ETN and they show out and work toward sharing duties as a freshman and (potentially) challenge for a start spot as a SO.
Anything can happen but if we're being neutral about this, CJ has his work cut out convincing Uber talented RBs other programs are coveting to sign up and be ready to grab maybe a few carries a game outside of blowouts

There is an argument to make

that Spiller is doing a good job developing them. Both Shipley and Pace improved leaps and bounds from Spring 2021 to the end of last season. Pace was a completely different back, he vastly improved in a short period of time.

glennjamin182® andTigerbalm1® nailed it.
We have three outstanding young backs who are really developing. Kudos to Spiller and coaches for this development, and good luck finding enough reps for all three. Nice problem to have.
The 800 lb. gorilla is line and QB play. Looking for Linthicum, Pennington, Leigh, Tate, Mayes and others to step up, and McFadden and Parks to continue development. Center position will be critical. Hopefully Putnam, Linthicum or another lineman can step up.
RB recruiting is an offshoot of line recruiting, and Saban & Smart have used line play against Clemson in recruiting battles. I hope this 2022 line can take some of that shadow away.

It is definitely a tough sell with the 3 guys we have on campus, and I see no reason for any to transfer because we will always run the hot hand. We do lose Pace after next year, and guys get injured. It would be nice to get someone in this class. He does not have to be a superstar, possibly a diamond in the rough willing to ride the pine for a couple of years. In all honesty, I did not expect Pace to emerge, that was probably the biggest surprise last year. The worry level for me is a 3 at this point.

CJ does indeed need to sign a couple of top RBs this cycle

We didn’t need them last class, but we definitely do have a big need in this class.
We’ll see how it goes.

People have fond memories of CJ as a running back

and also value the fact that Dabo hired him as a coach, so you aren’t likely to see many people join in your criticism of him.
With that said, that’s a lot of whiffs on the recruiting front. We have to do better.

The thing I will never understand about last year. I get we may miss out on the 5* and high 4* guys but was there no one other than Adams to offer?

You can't say this wasn't a really bad recruiting mistake from last year.

I have a sneaking suspicion that’s why we are keeping Green around the campus.
