The timing is interesting

Jan 9, 2022, 2:12 PM

It’s almost like they aren’t the top paying schools in the country anymore …

Yep Texas and Texas A&M are. No way they get all those 4 and 5 stars without money coming from somewhere. Fallout might be the supporting cast not getting much or none at all.

funny how Texas & A&M are suddenly to place to be for

They can't compete with A&M money. Nobody but Texas can.

The permanent university fund (PUF)

Jan 9, 2022, 2:42 PM

that Texas and A&M share (2/3 to 1/3) is probably larger than the Ivy endowments if you value it as a multiple of the income it produces. Like the accounting for an oil company, the book value of oil land in the PUF is the purchase price.

They just saw the Texas and the Aggies nil/recruiting fund money.

Suddenly, we have to do something!!!

Anyone with a single ounce of intelligence wants it to be regulated.***

Insert "integrity" in place of intelligence.

Obviously the NIL and transfer portal need IMMEDIATE stiffer regulations. The NIL especially was just thrown out there with apparently no rules at all. This is terrible for college sports.

The question now is - who is going to lead the chargecro set guardrails for the NIL and portal? It seems the NCAA just doesn't care anymore, and some new governing body must take over. The concern is the NIL has made cheating perfectly legal now, and if left unchecked for years it will run amok.

Can P5 presidents and ADS force change? I don't know. And some of these ADs probably don't care either especially those who stand to benefit from renegade boosters and fake "name, image, and likeness" deals. As far as I can tell, there isn't even a true requirement to use name, image, and likeness. You can just give money to kids under the guise of NIL, but then you don't even have to technically use a name, image, or likeness.

Take for instance Texas who has a booster who'll provide $50k to every offensive linemen. There isn't even a requirement that name, image, or likeness is ever used. It's just a front for buying players.

It needs immediate reform. At this point it looks like more coaches are going to have to band together and form a committee for making rules. In the least, if you're going to pay someone for their name, image, or likeness, then you need a contract stating as much. Only if a the name, image, or likeness is actually used do players get paid. At least that's a start. Second, there needs to be a cap placed on teams to ensure the rich don't get to monopolize the game. I mean we could all come up with some guidelines, but first and foremost we do not need to allow the schools with richest boosters to dominate recruiting simply because they have the richest alumni or a bigger amount of graduates.

Somehow the whole thing must be reformed to equalize all schools, big and small.

And the transfer portal? Being allowed to quit at the first sign of adversity? Or other schools tampering and alumni enticing kids with paychecks? It can't go on like this. Guardrails are needed and kids must be accountable. They shouldn't be able to quit just because things get tough.

Too many negatives exist in the world of NIL and transfer portal. Instead of simply talking about it, these coaches and schools who want to maintain the integrity of the game must band together to fight for rules and regulations. Now.

In just a few years of transfer portal and no holds barred on money, the game has already begun to degrade, and it will quickly get worse.

How many times have you actually seen or head when somebody pops the top of a can of worms, successfully get them all back in the cup!!! I'm betting not to many times, if any!!! The know it all's opened it up without a plan of how to keep evenly fair for all, and now they are clueless of how to call it back. It's just like a bullet when you pull the trigger, there is no way it can be called back, and finding it is almost impossible, just as putting the lid back on a can of worms named NIL. It will take them tears to get it regulated to be fair for all, and by that time, it will be a ton of college athletic program that had to close their doors of their athletic programs that will not open back up.

With paying college students that kind of money will never be right for the ones that have to pay their way through college, so it's probably best if college sports would just go away, and let the pro teams that's making a lot of money from sports, just open up farm teams like major league baseball does, and colleges can get back to what they were meant to do, further educate all the students that want to be further educated with very low interest loans bc, the more, and the better educated our young people are, the better our country will be in it's future!!!

They are very worried about the Texas schools using unlimited NIL resources and dominating recruiting and the SEC IMO. A changing of the guard.

I bet they do. They know their markets will never be able to compete with Texas, Florida, and California markets. Ours can't even compete with Georgia and Alabama, so regulation is good for us.

Re: Saban and Smart want increased NIL regulation…

Jan 9, 2022, 3:33 PM

Yep. Even Bama knows with-a state of only 5 million and with the boosters split between Bama and auburn they can’t match Texas and Texas AM. That is why I think it is a good thing what A&M did this year to get everybody’s attention …. When people like nick ain’t happy and he complains to Sankey …. Things might actually get done.

I appreciate what they are trying to say.

I would just like to ask them this question:

Do you want college football to be the minor league for the NFL or do you want it to be a tool whereby students can use football to pay for a college education?

I suspect they would say, "Both."

I submit that is impossible.

I think what they really want is for college football to be the minor league for the NFL but want to find someway to regulate player salaries and ability to move from one team to another (just like minor league baseball does).

They seem to want college football to be professional football with kids signing binding 3 year contracts with an option on the 4th year.

I saw nothing in their comments that makes academics anything more than an option provided to the players who can take advantage of it or not.

Re: Saban and Smart want increased NIL regulation…

Jan 9, 2022, 4:50 PM

Agree. I think some sort of dividing of NIL monies to go to the school that enables them, teammates that support them, and a deferred fund for the player to access the majority of funds at a later date. Sure they can get some payola immediately but all entities have a stake in the success or failure of the
recruit. Of course the player gets the majority of the funds but at a later date instead of the immediate gratification the Supreme Court and the NCAA have left it with at the moment. It will change when enough coaches and administrators holler loud enough.

Bingo, with the word "impossible" being the operative word. The Genie is out of the bottle. It's basically pay for play. The big money booster schools will benefit. At least 50% of the schools won't have any booster organizations offering big NIL money. I see it splintering into additional divisions - those that pay unlimited money and and become minor league teams, and those that choose the "amateur" status. Can't see a court anywhere ruling that you can limit the amount of money a player can be paid. The NFL does have a soft cap for rookies but past that it's unlimited. The league agreed to team caps to maintain somewhat of a level playing field or it would be the same 2-3 teams winning every year via high priced free agents. This evolved over years of protracted negotiations and legal challenges so it's not a snap your fingers ruling from a toothless NCAA. Times are changing - don't see any group or organization being able to reverse legal decisions that have already been made and were unanimous.

It could also mean

Jan 9, 2022, 4:10 PM

1. They care about the sport and know NIL isn’t good for it long term.

2. They really don’t want an NFL GM job which is basically what a head coach is now. Managing the NIL budget and every single player is on a one year contract and can quit mid-game with no repercussions. That can’t be easy for head coaches.
