The thing that stinks most about getting older

at least for me, is seeing my "heroes" or favorites from my younger days getting older and passing away. I'm in my 50s, but in many ways still feel like I'm still in my 20s, and like I could throw a backpack over my shoulder and slip right back into campus like I was in the late 80s. My aches and pains and grey hairs tell me otherwise, but I see me every day. In my mind, Meat Loaf is still like he was in Bat out of Hell or I'd Do Anything for Love (and wondering what "that" was that he wouldn't do!). Eddie Van Halen is still churning out new albums in his 5150 studios. Glen Frey is still up there next to Don Hendley singing about his Peaceful Easy Feeling. Dusty is still dancing next to Billy to Sharp Dressed Man. Dennis and Carl should still be out harmonizing with Brian, alongside Mike, Al & Bruce. Charlie should still be keeping the beat behind Mick while he struts around the stage. Ronnie should still be asking us to be her little baby.
It seems like some people should be allowed to live forever, but at least their music and influence will, and we can always pull out those old albums, or pull up the songs or albums on Spotify or whatever, and go back to those fun days.
Like Eddie said, I wanna go back and do it all over, but I can't go back, I know. I wanna go back, cuz I'm feeling so much older, but I can't go back, I know. (great song, by one of my favorite artists, also gone too soon).

I feel you man. Seems we are losing a lot of folks these days and all of them were part of our youth. Tough to wrap your mind around sometimes.

Agreed... I'm almost 60 now, but I just don't feel like it. I guess it's like my wife told me and my Clemson roommate (we are still best friends), men never completely grow up.
I saw all of those bands except Meatloaf live in concert.
Jimmy Buffett said it best, "If I had to do it all over again, I'd get myself drunk and I'd jump right back in.".

It was easy to see all the great bands back in the mid 70s to mid 80s. They were all so cheap to see. $8-10 would get you good seats back then.

I remember when the Stones came to Death Valley back in 90 or 91. I thought it was crazy that tickets were $30! Now, even though they're pushing 80, you can't see them or McCartney or any of these old dudes, many of whom are far past their prime, and some who shouldn't even still be touring, for less than $100! I wanted to take my wife and kids to see McCartney when he played Greenville a couple of years ago, but it would've cost me around $500 for 4 of us to get decent tickets! Sorry.... Maybe the 80s or 90s McCartney, but not the McCartney who is almost IN his 80s (he'll be 80 this year - that's nuts)!

The traffic leaving that show was unlike anything I have ever seen haha. GREAT show. The Stones will never again be the Stones without Charlie. His style was so unique. A jazz/swing drummer in a rock band - many have tried to duplicate it, none have succeeded.

i have a framed reproduction(wish it were an original) poster for an elvis concert in 1956,and the reserved seats were $1.75.i was 10 yrs. old at the time and could not attend.my parents thought his music was scandalous.given your age,you're still a kid.forget those little aches and pains.enjoy every day you're on the sunny side of the dirt.

I saw the Allman Brothers in their prime at Clemson. Right after the first time Duane was killed. Right after the second time Berry Oakley was killed. I expected a letter asking me to stay away from thie shows. Didnt get the letter but did stay away. Saw SRV twice but with no connection to his death

Life is about choices - spend your last years wishing you were young again, or enjoy your golden years - your choice. I’m personally glad that I was burning rubber, whilst most of you looked on with a corncob halfway up your arses, telling me I would die young.
I couldn’t have had a better run and concerts really don’t dominate my memories. I went to more concerts than most, but can’t think of one that enhanced my life as you guys apparently do…
Seriously, have you considered seeking God? Much more fulfilling than trying to remember Bonzo thru the fog…
There’s a long list of negatives associated with aging, but I really spend zero time listing them. It’s really all in your head, until something like cancer comes along - then you’ll realize you wasted time complaining about little stuff…
I feel sorry for you that didn’t grab life by the ears.
Last advice - hanging around young people is great, but they don’t want to hear about your aches and pains or how things were better in your days…

I was just saying that it's sad to see people who were significant in your youth getting old and passing away.
For the record, since you seem to know so much about me - I've seen very few concerts. And I've actually been to very few football games. I spend my time windsurfing, mountain biking, playing soccer and tennis, hiking, and running. I don't tell anyone about my aches and pains. The aches and pains remind ME. I don't remind OTHERS of them. I run half marathon distances every weekend, and 5k 4 mornings out of the weekdays. I have two great teenagers - one of whom challenges me and keeps me accountable for doing planks, pushups and other fitness things daily. He's 17, I'm in my early 50s, but I can outdo him in almost every event. I've hiked some of the tallest mountains on the east coast, been scuba diving in Hawaii, the Keys, St Thomas and the Bahamas. I've swam with dolphins and been skydiving. I've also been a God-fearing, Bible-believing Christian my entire adult life.
So - in case you didn't get it - I'm not complaining about anything. Just stating that it's sad to see these guys pass away and sad to see our youth get further in the rear-view mirror, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy my present and am looking forward to my future. I plan to keep on mountain biking, hiking, running, and whatever else I can do as long as I can do them, and with some frequency can do them better than those 20-30 years my junior. It is possible to miss your younger days and still enjoy your older days, which is what I'm doing.
Any other assumptions you'd like to make?

I am getting older. On my next birthday I'll be 72, but the guy that lives in my head is the same fellow who lived there when I was 25-40. I think and feel about things the same way I did when I was much much younger. I continue to do all the same things I was doing way back when, like the same sort of people now as then and mostly nothing has changed much for me. I love it that all my siblings and best friends from then are still alive and well.
So what stinks the most? I know a lot of dead people now and I knew very few when I was younger. I miss Doug, Sherry, Henry, CJ, Joe, Dennis, Glorian, Sandy, Jane....the list is pretty long and it keeps growing.
When celebrities die, I am glad I have lived my life in the modern age and not long long ago. Meat Loaf died but I listened to him sing several times today. I got to watch him perform. For most practical reasons, Meat Load, The Tams, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Ricky Nelson.....and many many others still live electronically for me to enjoy the rest of my life. 100 years ago life was not like that.
Lots of older people I run across are mellow and see nearly everyone more equally than different. The retired rich business tycoon and the hourly worker are peers when they get old. And the old guy still thinking he or she has higher standing or lived a better life because of this or that? They are the same as they were at 35 too. You know, Morons.

amen.i turned 75 last december,and i consider it a blessing to have lived and grown up(yes,disputed by my wife as well,but who cares)when and where that i did.you are so right.the little aches and pains associated with aging are meaningless.finding spiritual meaning in life is much more important.grandkids help a lot too.ive said this a few times before in previous posts,but it's worth repeating-my dad told me a while back that after 72,there are no sins.read Ecclesiastes,contemplate that for a while,and imagine the possibilities.

Thankfully for us all, Mr. Scott deMartinville, the French man who discovered how to record sound first with scrutable wavy lines (later only to be found in and about 2000+), about 1850's, gave us the ability "forever" to capture the voices of the dead and bring them back to life. and it will always be like that. Mr. Scott apparently even tried to sing a tune, which recording we now have. Too bad he couldn't come up with "playback" of his recordings, though that was to come some decades later (Edison).

I feel ya, and at 69 I'm seeing most of everyone I knew from back in the day are gone, or they are on deaths door. The only thing that helps me with knowing death for me isn't that far away, and that is we started dying the second we were conceived, and we really should accept death as a part of our life bc none of will leave this life alive. We all will take our place on deaths door, and nothing or no one can prevent that fact while living. Enjoy life while you're still alive, and welcome death when it comes, bc it will come, and when it does, I truly believe that God has a much better place for us when our spirit/soul exists our body, and our body is nothing more than a vessel for us to see God's love through his creations, and Satin's wickedness through evil, and we choose who we will follow in after life by the way we live our lives here on earth!!!!
