The soulless devils that will rule college athletics.

With the departure of Saban, now Larranaga, I am put at a loss as to what will come of college sports. I didn't really like what it was becoming prior to NIL and the portal, but I especially don't like it now.

Prior to NIL and the portal, you had unscrupulous coaches that did not worry about graduation rates, or how many kids they had to "process" to get that championship, or just win ball games. But you at least had coaches on their staffs and coaches at different institutions that developed their players into the best version they could be on as well as off of the field and concerned themselves with serving their hearts and not just their talents.

The vast majority of coaches out there that truly believed in the student athlete model, and strived to help develop each and every kid into what they could be no matter where they would end up. Now, those coaches can't win, cant keep kids from throwing away their lives for a short term and immediate payout.

Everybody wants instant grits, no body wants to wait or go through any pain whatsoever for authentic development of character. So much about life is overcoming adversity and sticking it out when it is incredibly hard and painful. Growth is pain, pain is growth. NIL and the portal have now allowed kids to postpone any pain, any waiting time, and grab whatever they can to have even greater heartache later down the line.

It worries me that Dabo maybe next, along with all the good coaches and that all we will be left with is a soulless bunch of devils exploiting kids even worse than the old system did. I think that is why I have almost stopped watching college sports altogether, it is soulless and there are only more and more devils running the show now.

You want to be at peace with yourself re. college sports(the big3)?

Accept it and enjoy it or reject it and move on. It's your choice and you have no control over how or what it becomes.

You can control accepting it or rejecting it. Some of it, most of it, all of it or none of it.

There are pro sports that I loved but there were things about them that changed that I could not accept. For years they have been dead to me. Completely rejected them and don't miss them a lick. Right now I am in the wait and see stage re. College sports. I don't have a problem with the players wanting some of the loot. How they get it is another matter.

I have not decided yet, but leaning toward total rejection.

I know I would be happier with the situation, but the nostalgia part is what I am struggling with. The good memories, the successes and failures. It is more complicated than than just quit caring.

I have never loved any pro sport. Lack of a team identity around me, but I could always identify with my Tigers. I think that is why I first loved college football, but now that love wanes and it is just a love for Clemson now.

But I find it hard to watch Clemson be punished for doing the right things, whether perceived or reality. I may have to give up on the hope, and that is sad.

You should abandon any consideration that Dabo will fall into the category...

you described. He would resign before he got pushed anywhere near the level of depravity.

That is my fear though,

and college football will be the worse for it. If all the good ones leave, all that is left are the devils.

If you think current system exploits players, how do you think the old system did?

Seriously, I wonder what these people are thinking. Cade could leave with 7+ million dollars. The interest on that is more than 80% of college graduates. Even if he didn’t graduate, college did what it was meant to do. Prepare him for life. He won’t need anything else.

People want to harken back to some imaginary time when people didn't care about money. In this fantasy world, the players who played for your team were completely loyal and loved your team the way you do. It's probably far more likley that players like TL, Watson, Spiller and a host of others (and this would be true of all teams), would have made other choices had they had the options of todays' players.

All of those players you mentioned probably would go somewhere else...

...in today's environment. Because now you can pay for play. What was special about Clemson, was the development of kids and graduation. Mamma's could send their kids here and know they would get a diploma and become men. Now, Mamma and Daddy and Uncles and the kids only look at what NIL they can get and nothing else. One of the main reasons Saban left is Miss Terry asked him why are we doing this, all the parents are just asking how much money we can pay the athletes now, they are not concerned with education and character development. It is sad

At least kids were placed in a position to graduate.

It was not perfect, nothing is, but at least there was an attempt to get kids to graduate. The new system ironically, sets the table for much worse exploitation moving forward.

They still are. An 18 year old can make a decison to enlist in the armed forces and accepts that it may cost him his life. I think an 18 year old who happens to be 6'2" 220lbs and runs a 4.4. can also make important decisions surrounding school and money. No one feels like they have to protect the former from his decision, which may ultimatel cost him his life. For the latter though, we're scared to death he may not finish school or may earn too much money.

Okay, but money runs out....

....and the payday they get now, will not last most of these kids past graduation. This is a situation where we will have to disagree. How many NFL players go broke? Do you think these kids are better equipped to handle NIL money than NFL contract players....you may also need to adjust your look at reality as well.
