The Sky Isn't Falling (Long)

Many threads over the last few days seemed to indicate the sky was falling. When I left home this AM to do a little volunteer work the sun was out and the sky was still in place. That alone made my spirits soar and I remembered several important things that have occurred in recent times.
Ten years ago most of the posts on Tiger boards were bemoaning the fact Dabo Sweeney had been named head coach of our beloved Tigers. "He has never been a head coach", "he has never even been a coordinator", "we have to have a name coach", "we've got to spend money to get a proven coach" and the list goes on. There was a lot of negative talk and worry. Take a look at our program today.
For years and years there have been complaints about our poor OL recruiting and there was no way we could compete with the big boys. Those 3*** and 2** recruits just couldn't cut the mustard. But in spite of those lowly OL members, our program began to improve. We did manage to get one or two high star recruits and on Dec. 29, those lowly Tigers will participate in their fourth consecutive playoff. There has been numerous posts denigrating Coach Caldwell's ability to put our OL grads in the pros. Is that the prime measure of success in our football program or is working as a team to win championships and develop the whole person more important? Have we not noticed where our OL members sing high praises re Coach Caldwell. I have yet to hear of one player who has made a negative remark about his coaching.
How many recruits has Clemson lost? If we count Belk, that's the only one I can think of at the moment. Correct me if I am wrong, but I can't recall one recruit who has committed to Clemson and later on decommitted. We don't lose a recruit who has never committed in the first place. We are selective in who we would like to see commit to our program but none of us, including the coaches, can make the decision for them. That is their choice and there are a multitude of reasons involved in that decision. We should act with a degree of maturity when they go elsewhere and not attempt to denigrate them for not choosing the Tigers. Often times we forget that those recruits who choose Clemson bring grief to fans of the other schools who have been recruiting that prospect.
For many years we were happy to be able to attract those 3*** recruits. But now we target those 5***** and 4 **** prospects and it's a dog fight because many other schools are pulling out all the stops to attract the cream of the crop. There are so many factors involved it would be almost impossible to enumerate each one in this post. Babo and his staff have established guidelines that automatically eliminates some highly sought recruits. We are somewhat aware of a few of those, particularly those that relate to academics and character. But in the end, the fact remains, we will win some and we will lose some.
I enjoy the excitement of recruiting, rejoicing when we snag a big fish and moaning when we have a big fish on the line but he breaks the line just when we thing we're going to reel him in. That's life, and I try not to worry over something which I have no control

Chesty --- I have never said I was perfect and your keen eyes confirms my imperfection. I have this strange keyboard. Sometimes it does not respond to my wishes. I do believe several Grimlins have taken up residence in my keyboard and are making my life miserable.

A lot of good common sense there Joe. The sun will still be shining Thursday morning too. Proud of all of our coaches. Clemson Football is at a place we once dreamed of, enjoy every minute.

Thanks Joe, for the wisdom of the ages. It takes perspective to fully appreciate where we are as opposed to where we’ve been. Even when not so sunny days return, we will still be loyal Tiger fans cheering on our beloved school. Anyone who falls to the wayside, never was a true fan anyway. Just hope the sun stays out for a very long time.
