The Six Scenarios for Clemson to get into the Playoffs

Nov 21, 2022, 12:40 PM

I saw a post or two earlier listing all the different things Clemson needs to have happen in order to make the playoffs. The bad thing is that Clemson still likely does need help from other teams to get into the playoffs. The good thing is that there are several teams able to help Clemson and Clemson does not need help from ALL of them – just a combination of two.

Assuming Clemson wins out over both Carolinas (South and North), Clemson only needs two other games to go our way. ANY combination of TWO of the following would put the Good Guys in:

- UGa beats LSU - (Alternatively: Ga Tech upsets (shocks) UGa AND LSU beat UGa)
- USC loses either game: ND or Pac 12 Title game (probably vs Oregon)
- TCU loses Big 12 Title game (probably vs. Kansas St).
- Ohio State/Michigan winner loses Big 10 title game BADLY

That creates six scenarios (below) in which Clemson gets into the playoffs as long Clemson takes care of its own business. Note, there are other possibilities, however:
1. I am not assuming how the CFP committee would pick in choosing between a one loss ACC Champ Clemson vs. a one loss Big 12 Champ TCU. They could go either way, which means there are other possibilities beyond just the six scenarios below.
2. I am assuming that since Southern Cal (USC) is currently ahead of Clemson in the CFP rankings that USC would stay there if both teams won out; however, we don’t really know that with certainty.
3. I am assuming that the Ohio State/Michigan winner would get into the playoffs with a close loss in the Big Ten title game – but not if they get their doors blown off with a terrible, noncompetitive loss.
4. I am assuming UGa gets into the CFP regardless of the SEC Title game outcome if (when) UGa beats Ga Tech.

With that said, any combination of two (or more) of the above outcomes and Clemson is in IF Clemson wins out. Obviously, some of these are more likely to occur (UGa over LSU) than others. For example:

Scenario 1: UGa beats LSU. USC loses either game: ND or Pac 12 Title game (probably vs Oregon). (Of these scenarios, this one seems the most likely scenario in my humble opinion.)

Scenario 2: UGa beats LSU. TCU loses Big 12 Title game (probably vs. Kansas St).

Scenario 3: UGa beats LSU. Ohio State/Mich winner loses Big 10 title game BADLY

Scenario 4: USC loses either game. TCU loses Big 12 title game.

Scenario 5: USC loses either game. Ohio State/Michigan winner loses Big 10 title game BADLY

Scenario 6: TCU loses Big 12 Title game. Ohio State/Michigan winner loses Big 10 title game BADLY

There is an Alternative Scenario 7 – but it is so unlikely that it is would hardly worth hoping for:
Scenario 7: Ga Tech upsets UGa. Texas A&M upsets LSU. LSU beats UGa.
(My personal favorite scenario – but far too unlikely to occur.)

There is a big potential wrinkle, though. You seem to be assuming that the loser of OSU/UM is out. That would only be a single loss, and if it's a close game, they'd still have a solid resume. The playoff could easily be UGA + OSU + Mich + TCU/USC/us/?

If Michigan loses

Out of the CFP, close or not. They SOS is far worse than ours, heck even worse than TCU.
I think all we need is either TCU or USC lose and we are in.

Michigan's only ranked win was against Penn State and a 4-Loss Illinois. I think their SOS may give us an edge along with a conference championship. I'm most concerned about TCU and USC and need them to pick up a loss.

Personally I think a1 loss conference champ gets the nod over a one loss non conference champ. The committee seems to have put a lot of weight in winning your conference. When it goes to 12 you win your confidence you are automatically in.

UGA is in regardless (Won't lose to GT)
OSU is in even with a loss to Michigan due to Oregon victory
TCU has to win out to get in
USC has to win out to get in
Michigan is out with a loss to OSU unless they dominate the game and lose a close one at the end
Clemson is in with a TCU or USC loss (win out of course)
Things would get interesting if both USC and TCU lose.

don't overlook TCU/ISU this weekend....

Nov 21, 2022, 1:22 PM

I just think the emotional ride TCU is on has to catch them at some point.... and ISU has lost something like 6 one possession games this season...

They will lose this weekend. Classic trap game. Long long season.

doesn't have to be that complicated

you want Uga to win out... Sec Champ in
you want TCU to win out--- Big 12 champ in
you want UM or OSU to win out Big 10 champ in
you wnat USC to lose to ND or champ game

Of course Clemson has to win out ACC champ will get in..

Yeah. I’d like to play UGA rather than OSU in the playoffs round 1. OSUs WRs would be a challenge for us.

Isn't it exhausting thinking about all of the teams ahead of us that have to lose in the next two weeks as favorites in order for us to MAYBE slide into the #4 spot?

Like, if we're praying for all of this chaos to happen ahead of us just for us to have a chance at #4, is that really that big of an honor?

2015-2020 we never had to run scenarios on what was needed to make the CFP.

Actually adds some interest to the end of the year. The 6 previous playoff years got boring with us knowing we were already in.

All Clemson needs is a TCU or USC loss and to win out. That’s it. Those 2 things happen and Clemson is in.

simplified version

TCU, USC, and Clemson (in that order) are in a race right now for fourth position. Whoever wins out gets in.

If Michigan loses badly then the race is for third and fourth positions.

A couple of notes:

TCU beat Kansas St. 38-28 at home. Kansas State was missing it's starting QB.

IF USC, TCU, Michigan and LSU all lose. Which is not that farfetched. Clemson will be #3.
