Why is everyone upset about the rock protection?

Didn't the new measures work? The rock was not damages wasn't that the goal of the new measures? They also caught the vandal on video, isn't that also something they added after the last vandalism?
I think it's a little unrealistic to expect them to have 365/24/7 armed guard on site or even monitoring a video feed. I think some of you have no idea what it cost to provide 365/24/7 armed guard. That would require 5 people and with salary, benefits, vacation, and equipment $350,000.00 a year would be on the low end of the scale.
What was put in place worked the rock was not damaged.

Do you really think this warrants jail time? Do you have any idea what that cost the tax payers? Do you have any idea what someone is subjected to in prison? Jail should be for people who poise a threat to others.

Expensive case that cost the University/insurance company thousands of dollars. Not to mention intent to commit a felony

But that line of thinking can pretty much be extended to every non-violent crime. At some point the lack of evident punishment begins to remove any incentive be to not act like an a$$hat and destroy other people's property.

Not sure why destruction of property is ok with you.

So only if it's your property someone deserves jail time or is it you feel in general no one should face jail time if they just deface public or private property? Because obviously they are upstanding citizens who have everything in their life in control and pose no threat? Oxymoron. Should he go to county jail for the crime for an extended time and pay a hefty fine? Yes.

...being destroyed by some goon with a steel pipe you might feel slightly different. To say that this guy, who had to know he was being surveilled and obviously didn't care, doesn't pose a threat to others is a huge stretch. I would actually be shocked if the man doesn't have a criminal record already. Anyone brazen enough to do what he did would likely have no qualms doing the same to your or my front door. Not buying that argument at all.

Really? The same biulding? It's a stadium. It would be very easy for someone to jump the fence attack the rock enclosure for a minute jump back over the fence and dissappear into the campus.

"The new security measures were implemented in August. Two spotlights brighten Howard's Rock from dusk to dawn, plus a mounted camera points downward from the east end zone scoreboard directly at the pedestal, monitored by Clemson University police.
"They can see the rock 24/7," Hilderbrand said, "if they want to look at it."
When a passersby approaches the rock, he or she is informed by a voice-activated warning triggered by a motion detector, "you're now being videoed by the Clemson University Police Department.""

Assuming all of that equipment works, clearly the cops just weren't paying attention.

Unfortuntately the "Hey there's a big ask man beating the ship outa me with an iron bar" alarm failed to function properly.

there is already a video feed directly to the police department.
Either the police were asleep or the video and motion sensor were not working
The new security measures were implemented in August. Two spotlights brighten Howard's Rock from dusk to dawn, plus a mounted camera points downward from the east end zone scoreboard directly at the pedestal, monitored by Clemson University police.
"They can see the rock 24/7," Hilderbrand said, "if they want to look at it."
When a passersby approaches the rock, he or she is informed by a voice-activated warning triggered by a motion detector, "you're now being videoed by the Clemson University Police Department."
A new Plexiglas cover is armed with sensors. If the rock is shaken or moved - but not touched - an alarm sounds in the police department, located just outside the stadium.
Finally, Memorial Stadium is no longer an open house when nobody's around. Previously, it was easy enough to walk the perimeter and find an unlocked gate. That random access is no more.

You ask why is everyone upset about the rock/protection? You don't know? Are you a Clemson fan?

damaged. It did it's job and probably held up long enough to make the crook feel uncomfortable and leave the scene.
Either way, I think it's silly to have it out in the open during times when literally nobody is in the vicinity to even appreciate it. I would take measures to remove the rock and place it in a safe place in the off season...maybe even in the museum?

Drill out the concrete and put the pedestal on an elevator mechanism. During the day the base rises out of the vault and is available for appreciation. Night falls, base and rock descend into the vault for safe keeping....covered by a decorative 3 inch thick iron plate.
We're an engineering school it wouldn't be that complicated to build. Simple, vandalism safe, bomb proof and efficient.

What a very liberal approach. Why don't they just release his name, DOB , home address, employment and social media profile and see how it's handle if it's no big deal
