The new USuC mascot name “The General”

Aug 29, 2022, 5:08 PM

Name after General Thomas Sumter who….

“Sumter was jailed for debt in Staunton, Virginia, in 1765, but he escaped and fled to South Carolina. There he opened a store near Eutaw Springs and married a wealthy widow, Mary Cantey Jameson, in 1767. By 1775 he owned thousands of acres, mills, and many slaves. Sumter was known as "The Carolina Gamecock," for the cock's feather he wore in his hat.”

So they named the mascot after an escaped convict slave owner. Fitting…basically sums up both sides of that fan base pretty well.

The best part is Sumter’s Law. Paid soldiers with slaves to entice enlistment.

Some people were a “man of their times”. Some people took that up a notch, like Sumter.

Of course they always deny that they’re named after Sumter, but this should put that to rest.

I wonder if General Insurance owns the rights to "The General" All of their ads on TV highlight "The General".

Yeah? They took his name off the building like everyone wanted.

UofSC is doing this today, for the future.

You see the difference, right?

Should have been “Private”. No way a chicken could be a general.

Just when you think the coots couldn’t be more pitiful……wrong again.

Should named the chicken Wild Bill Hickock - they’re both drunk, dangerous and outta control.

Isn't "General" the name of the Bulldog that the Citadel uses? Well, if they beat you, you might as well borrow a name from them.

Frances Marion refused to serve under Sumter again after

Aug 29, 2022, 9:11 PM

Sumter insisted on a frontal assault on the fortified British position at Videau’s Bridge. Sumter overrode the objections of the other Patriot militia leaders - Marion, Col. Henry Lee and Hezekiah Maham- and Marion’s troops suffered their heaviest losses in a single battle.
The only reason the Fort was named for Sumter is that he was the only surviving RevWar leader when the Fort was finished in 1833. Like a gamecock, he was foolish, arrogant beyond belief and tended to abandon the field of battle before the last period.
