Changes over the next decade:

2

Oct 9, 2024, 3:44 PM

Complete speculation, but I think there is more than a reasonable chance of the following changes to college athletics within the next decade:
- Elimination of rule barring prospective college athletes if they signed/participated in professional sports.
- Elimination of rules governing years of eligibility (6 to play 4, etc).

The argument will be the constitutionality of barring an individual from full college participation due to age, prior employment, etc. effectively depriving them of opportunities provided to other college students.

Basically, if you are a full time college student, you have the right of full college level participation.

There are probably smart lawyers looking into it already.

I would have to agree. Why is college sports constrained to an arbitrary number of years. I personally dont want to see this change, but from a legal point of view it is no different that limiting players opportunities regarding compensation. So its ripe to be challenged.

Same for a professional player that wants to come back, for whatever reason after trying their hand in the professional level. Again, I dont like it, but its an arbitrary rule.

Everything will likely be challenged until the schools band together and seek an exception at the Federal/ congressional level. I figure it just needs to get a bit more ridiculous before enough leaders say, enough is enough, and allow some federal rules regarding this. Again I hate that it has come to this, but I dont see another way around it.

Agree to some sort of salary cap and limit transfers in some way that has the student in mind but ends the ridiculousness that is occurring regularly now.

The Maurice Clarett Rule will fall too

Oct 9, 2024, 6:34 PM

***Maurice Clarett one day will be a martyr for kids who are good enough to "not need 3 to 4 years of college" and go straight into professional football.

I don't it's a good thing for the player at all to be clear! Even if a kid is physically capable; I don't think they should do it.

But, I can see this rule falling very soon. For basically, the very same reason you have NIL, because you should not be allowed to legally prevent someone from making money off of their abilities, name, image or likeness!

It would be a "boo boo show" but, I think it's coming!

Its not the NCAA that makes the rule on 3 years out from high school to go to the NFL. That is a NFL rule. The NCAA has no say so in it. Just like the one year rule for the NBA.

That may indeed have to be the answer
