The "buyout" simply means Dabo is our coach for the next 5

years. It really isn't that big a deal unless you wanted to fire him within the next five years. Now, no one, not even the biggest Dabo hater is going to mention firing him for the next 5 years. Dabo won't have to address any "hot seat" issues with recruits or media. The AD also won't have to worry about the football coach for the next 5 years.

This is no different than the old days when you gave your brand new untested coach at least 5 years before you made a change, even though you did not have too.

In my opinion, this makes everybody's life easier. We aren't going to talk about firing a coach for 5 years. period.

Again, I think Dabo is a great coach and does an excellent job managing his staff, but 5 years is a long time. I don't think Dabo is anything like Chizik, but do you think Auburn fans would have thought they would be getting rid of him that fast after winning the NC? I seriously doubt it happens, but if Morris and Venables get hired away and we go 6-6 for two years in a row, do you think Dabo gets 3 more years if he doesn't have an very high buyout?

I'm just saying, no one knows what the future holds. Dabo deserves to be extremely well compensated, but an 8 year contract is just crazy to me. Think back to where you were 8 years ago and tell me it isn't long time.

The buyout is significantly cheaper after year 5. Morris

and Venebles look like they will be here next year. Now you are down to 4 years. I don't think 4 years is that long given what Dabo has done to date.

Maybe it is just me, and that is fine, but I don't like a coach at Clemson getting a deal like this. It makes me think of the days when Paul Hewitt was GT's basketball coach and they just couldn't get rid of him because of his contract. Even now at GT, I think they would get rid of PJ if he didn't have the buyout he has. He was very successful, their fans thought he was some kind of CFB guru, and now they are mediocre and he isn't considered to be a great coach anymore..

D rad will be the one that gets fired if this doesn't work

out. I can understand your concerns given his track record at GaTech.

There's Nothing Easy About This

Although I agree with your reasoning except for acknowledging that now, Clemson has zero leverage on Dabo.

That means that if Clemson continues to depend on FSU making the playoffs in order for Clemson to get to a BCS bowl game, Dabo is under zero pressure.

Losing is plenty of leverage. No one likes to lose. I don'

think any coach worth his salt worries about the money as an incentive to win. I think coaches want to win, regardless of money.

Too early to say for me.

If this season surprises us and we only loose 1 or at most 2 games again, and if the 2015 recruiting class comes out as strong as it is looking like it could, we may think having a lock on Swinney for an additional 4 years was smart. By lock, I mean a contract making him unattractive to other programs for those 4 years.

Terrible contract for Clemson. No one seems interested in him as their HC. Clemson admin had plenty of leverage, but acted like they had none with this contract.

If you want to pay him more to his perceived value, fine, but don't make him unfireable for 4 years. Those Buyouts are ridiculous. Didn't we learn anything from the Bowden contract???

The buyout doesn't mean that Dabo is our coach for the next 5 years. It means Clemson won't be firing him for the next 5 years.

Nothing about the contract prevents him from taking another job next year or the year after or the year after because the buyout on his end is chump change for any school that could conceivably be considered an upgrade.

I guess if you want to feel good about it, we've successfully warded off the furmans and woffords of the world from poaching our coach.
