The last time each SEC team played in Clemson

(Leaving out Texas, Scar, Oklahoma) Georgia 2013, Auburn 2017, Alabama 1969, Mississippi State 1949, Tennessee 1919, Texas A&M 2019, Florida 1925, Kentucky 1982, Ole Miss never has, LSU never has, Arkansas never has, Vanderbilt never has, Mizzou 2000 when they were a member of the Big 12.
Auburn has been the only SEC team throughout the years that has been willing to play in Clemson. For that reason it’s probably the Big 10 will be the conference we will end up in. Unless of course the SEC feels threatened by the Big Ten getting a footprint in the South.

Distorted. We also haven’t played at their locations in about the same length of time. They were home and homes, so…. For example, we’ve played in Tuscaloosa the same number of times bama has played in Clemson.

Pretty sure Clemson only played at SEC home team stadiums for the majority of it's football history. To say that SEC football teams have played at Death Valley an equal amount would be a huge distortion of facts.

Cmon man. Lol. I am as big a Clemson fan is anybody, but to say that SEC teams are scared to come in to Clemson and play football is taking homerism and sunshine pumping to an epic new level.

Who said anything about teams being scared to play in Clemson???
Most of the time (up 'till the 70s's) when Clemson played SEC teams it was on their home-field. That's a fact.

From the 30’s to the 70’s we played SEC teams by scheduling them at their stadiums while they largely refused to come to Clemson. Some of these teams haven’t even played in Clemson since the SEC was first started in 1932. Alabama has only played in Clemson twice, while we have played down there 11 times. Tennessee has played in Clemson 5 times, while we have played up their 13. Tennessee hasn’t even played in Clemson as a member of the SEC, neither has Florida. Florida has only played in Clemson twice, while we have played down there 11 times. You can go look up the rest yourself at Winsipedia.
Like I said Auburn has been the only team willing to come play in Clemson throughout the years.

To be fair, Clemson wasn't "Clemson" in the earlier years...

GT was going to take Clemson off the schedule before joining the ACC. It's what started the $2 bill tradition.
From the article...
The reason Clemson played at Georgia Tech for so many years and participated in the series was because of money. Long time Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard explained that it was a necessary to go to Atlanta every year. “A few years back we needed the money. Going to play in Atlanta with the large population and the big stadium, it was like going to a bowl game. It really paid dividends and helped us during the years,” said Howard.
It also helped in recruiting those bigger towns by taking Clemson's "show" on the road.
Those seem the major reasons, the whys Clemson chose to play those bigger schools on the road so often.
Fast forward a bit, the money being better, similar to Duke selling a home game to Clemson in the 80s or smaller schools coming to play at Clemson for a piece of the gate and/or play for pay fees. Clemson was the smaller program looking to a pay day.
https://clemsontigers.com/the-2-dollar-bill-tradition/![]() By Sam Blackman It hadn’t been too many years ago when the Clemson-Georgia Tech football series was cancelled. From this sad ending a new and longstanding Tiger Tradition was born. In 1977, the two ancient foes were to go their separate ways. Clemson wanted a home and home series with the Yellow Jackets. But the Georgia Tech administration would not hear of it. Even the two presidents of both schools got involved in the situation and common ground could not be reached. Clemson played Georgia Tech in Atlanta every year the two schools met except for three games prior to the Yellow Jackets joining the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 1898, the first game in the series, the two teams played on Thanksgiving Day in Augusta, GA. In 1899, the two rivals met in Greenville, SC, also on Thanksgiving Day. The Tigers were victorious in those two games. In the first and only visit to Clemson prior to Georgia Tech joining the ACC, the Tigers defeated the Yellow Jackets 21-17 on September 28, 1974. In the IPTAY Report dated on September 20, 1977, then IPTAY Executive Secretary George Bennett asked that the Tiger faithful making the trip to Atlanta use https://clemsontigers.com/the-2-dollar-bill-tradition/ dollar bills to show merchants at hotels and restaurants, etc. what an impact the Clemson nation had on the local economy. According to Bennett this was a good way to prove a point—Clemson fans do have an impact on a local economy. “We want to make a big impact on Atlanta this weekend. I would like to ask that every Clemson fan take as many two dollar bills as possible and use these rare bills for every expenditure.” It’s really not known exactly how much impact the Clemson fans made on the economy in Atlanta that weekend in 1977, but anytime Tiger fans come to town, restaurants and hotels are full and local businesses not only love the color of green in their tills but all of the orange that fill their establishments. Clemson defeated Georgia Tech in Atlanta 31-14, on September 24, 1977, in what was to be the last game in the series. The Tigers scored on its first three offensive possessions and built up a 24-7 halftime lead in front of 50,116 fans. The Tigers’ Lester Brown rushed for 134 yards on the afternoon. On April 1, 1978, Georgia Tech joined the Atlantic Coast Conference and this forced the Yellow Jackets to play the Tigers on a home and home basis—the series was resumed without a long interruption in 1983. To this day, Clemson fans will spend https://clemsontigers.com/the-2-dollar-bill-tradition/ dollar bills when making a road trip in the opponent’s territory to show that the Tigers are in town. One For the Books In 1945, the country was recovering from World War II, the troops were returning and many of them going back to college to resume their academic career that was interrupted by serving Uncle Sam in the armed forces. In 1944 Clemson suffered its worst loss in the series to Georgia Tech, a 51-0 loss in Atlanta. But the 1945 season was to be different. Coach Howard and Clemson kept things going on campus the best they could. Many schools dropped football, but Clemson managed to always field a team and because of this, Howard said that is why Clemson enjoyed success in the late 40s and 1950s. “We kept the football team going, and we didn’t drop football like many schools did. And because of this, we were ahead and didn’t have to play catch up. I feel it helped the morale of the students at Clemson and those abroad. I would write the players serving our country and tell them about what’s happening at Clemson and plans for the team when they came back from service,” said Howard. Prior to Clemson playing Georgia Tech on November 24, 1945, Yellow Jacket Head Coach Bobby Dodd, in his first year, announced that his second string would start against Clemson. He wanted to rest his first string players and have them ready for the Georgia game the following week. “We saw what Dodd said in the newspaper,” said Howard. We also knew they didn’t scout us any that season. We knew we had a point to make.” Clemson’s Butch Butler, who was on a 45-day leave from the Army, scored two touchdowns for Clemson before 20,000 people in Atlanta. Frank Howard said he asked the general for a 45-day leave for Butler because he had the days numbered that he needed him during the football season. At the start of the game, Clemson proved they were for real and Georgia Tech’s first string soon got in the game. The Tigers, led by Butler, upset Georgia Tech, 21-7. “I think my boys played a whale of a game against Tech,” said Howard following the game. “I think everyone will agree they were the class of the ball game from start to finish,” said Howard. A feature of the game at halftime was the appearance of Clemson’s famous Senior Platoon. This drill team gained national prominence around the country and brought fame and prestige to Clemson. The series with Georgia Tech is a very intriguing one and is filled with many colorful characters. It’s fortunate for fans that both teams are in the same conference and they continue to play each other year after year.

That's not really a good way to describe it. Other teams did not "refuse" to come to Clemson. It was more a case of Clemson being able to earn more revenue away from home than they would by playing at home, since they - like many other teams - did not have a large on-campus stadium at the time. Back in the day, game day ticket sales was the largest source of revenue for most programs. Clemson - like many other teams - sought out, asked for, and played games at both away stadiums and neutral sites to maximize their revenue so they could fund their program. Once you built Memorial Stadium, and particularly after you expanded it in the 1950s, you began to host a lot of those games.

We had to play away because those schools refused to come to Clemson. Even from the 50’s on SEC teams still refused to come to Clemson. As Death Valley has gotten bigger SEC teams have even shown more unwillingness to play here. And that bears out with the facts I referenced.

I don’t see where this somehow makes an argument for the BIG. Did you go through the BIG teams to see when they last came to Death Valley??? I would guess the number is close to zero ever.
Meanwhile we played UGA home and away for years, Auburn occasionally and ran into several others in the postseason. When you figure 10 game schedules for decades filled with conference teams and in-state teams plus USuc there was usually only one spot for anybody else. When we went to 11 games we weren’t in position yet to host 7 games. You have to get to the mid-70s to even have a true comparison and since then the conference expanded taking up another slot of home games. USuc and UGA generally filled those with a Notre Dame, Rice, A&M, Marshall and a few other oddballs taking generally two possible slots a year.

Just take two of the SEC teams Tennessee and Florida and their proximity to Clemson. There is no reason why we shouldn’t have played those two teams more. Clemson has always made the effort to schedule SEC teams, but they refuse to play in Clemson. I know for a fact that Georgia avoids us as much as possible. Same goes for other SEC schools, our AD has made the effort to reach out but they rebuff us.

Clemson and UGA once played every year. The UGA AD in the late 80's wanted to start rotating Clemson and SC every two years. Too much to play both every year? When SC joined the SEC in 92 they started scheduling Clemson even less frequently. The UGA admin in recent times has been a little more proactive in scheduling Clemson.

Played Clemson five times for the past 23 seasons. Next year’s game is at a neutral site as was the game in 2021. Since 1990, Georgia has only played in Death Valley 4 times. Since 1979 Clemson has a 5-3-1 record vs the Bulldogs in Death Valley. Georgia without a doubt hates coming to play in Death Valley. Georgia hates the fact that we can go into Georgia and get players like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. It bruises their ego.

You're all over the map trying to find numbers that work favorably for you. What does 1979 have to do with anything? You brought up 1990. Unless I'm wrong since 1990 Clemson has played in Athens four times and is 0-4. Maybe Clemson avoids playing Georgia?

after being down from the mid sixties to mid seventies. When we were good from the late 70’s to early 90’s Clemson’s record vs Georgia was 6-6-1. Y’all had a huge lead in the series before then, but when things evened out during that time period and more of the match ups happened in Death Valley is when Y’all started avoiding us. Y’all have used the excuse of playing the sorry shamecocks as excuse ever since then to avoid Scheduling us. Our AD had always made efforts to schedule Georgia on a yearly basis, but it’s Georgia which has used the gamecock excuse to avoid us since 1990.

The overriding factor that will determine any conference affiliation beyond the ACC is eyes on screens. It isn't quite 100% about adding new TV markets to create more viewership and revenue for the conferences but it is DANG close. The ACC picked up pieces of the Dallas Fort Worth area with SMU and is edging as close to Los Angeles as they could get with Cal and picked up San Francisco with Stanford. In the ACC's eyes they have a footprint in 6 of the top TV markets, NY(Cuse), LA (Cal), Dallas(SMU), Atlanta(GT), Boston(BC) and San Francisco(Stanford). They get some of the DC area with UVA and VTech. Probably some of Philly with BC. The ND pact gets them Chicago but it's more a nationwide brand. With all of that the conference "has a presence" in each and every top 10 market. THIS is what recruiting directors are probably recruiting with against the SEC arguments. Yeah, 100k plus will see you in the stadium but we can get you in front of millions on TV in these markets.
My argument as a CFB fan is only the southern markets identify as CFB towns. Just an FYI, the GSA market checks in at #35 nationally. I was surprised.

I don’t want to go to the SEC because I do not want to play that schedule year end and year out but I definitely do not want to join the Big Ten or whatever they call it now. How can any Clemson fan honestly be pulling for that to happen? We do not have one natural rival in the conference. There’s also not one team in that conference that is within a reasonable drive from South Carolina. There has to be another option besides these two.

and if we do go to the Big 10 it would be with FSU and possibly two other ACC schools. So it would be 7 home games a few road games to the fellow ACC schools that make the move with us. So probably like two road games that would include a significant travel.
