This is a bit of a stretch for a prediction model.
First, given how rare it is in the history of college football for a school to win a national championship with a brand new head coach, the inclusion of this binary parameter in any prediction model is likely over specifying that model.
Second, it is likely not generalizable to the current climate of college football with the transfer portal being widely used and the coaching carousel each offseason.
Lastly, the thresholds set for the tiers and for the number of starts for the qb appear subjectively chosen without any prior knowledge or actual evidence to justifying those selections. Any inference would be likely biased towards the writer’s own self-perceived preseason rankings for teams. At best, this should be a descriptive of what teams have any of the qualifications the writer listed without any ranking.

Look, I realize we have a solid team taking the field this Fall. And, I recognize that everybody and their brother has an opinion. We all do. I'm no unique in my prognostication recognition abilities. But can we, for once, just ignore reporting on everybody's prediction? It offers no value and it typically causes stress amongst the faithful.
That said, it probably adds clicks, which probably gives you money. So F you and F this ridiculous system.

Where does this magic number of 13 for previous season ranking come from?
My gut said it was purely because we finished 14th last season in the AP poll, but this clown does mention that it's based on the CFP final (16th, also bologna).
If you're a sports analyst, it seems the new MO is to move the goal post back until it makes the square fit in the circle hole you want it too. Same with the basketball rankings. Junk.

I dunno, I don't think that's what this was at all, but we're blowing it way out of proportion, too.
If it was meant to create engagement, it certainly worked, & more effectively than the metric itself ever could (notably as they mentioned it just happened for Ohio State the same way).

That's kinda all it is, rather than an insult or something as many are saying.
It's talking season, & this is just a marker for "most" recent titles... & then explicitly mentions how it was arguably worse at the team that won the title last year.
IT's interesting to mention & nothing more, but I hate we let it hurt us & enrage Clemson nation so much so easily & so often like this.
It's like saying you don't have to marinade meat for more than an hour or two; doesn't matter if it's accurate, the meat will still taste great if you do the rest right, but some people will be furious about it anyway.

So it mentions one specific formula, then immediately mentions Ohio State just won the championship with the same amount of the same formula as Clemson has.
I do wish the full article was included (or at least notably the upgrade part so many people seem upset about here & on Facebook, etc.), but it's talking season rather than a conspiracy.
I think they do this stuff BECAUSE they know we will engage en masse, & it works.
If it bugs you, let this one go & know instead we're actually good evidence against this strange metric about longevity in a very specific way outright. Go Tigers!
