...against anyone they've played this season. They're in the Southern conference. I know we're missing some starters, but out backups should be much better than this.
Do you think the problem is more at DL or LB, or is it a mixture of both? The LB miss a lot of tackles and are often out of position. We should not be getting gashed like we do almost every week.

It's actually not over. These problems we see against lesser opponents tend to show up in a major way when we play higher quality teams.

The problem is with coaching. Wes cannot make adjustments and for the past few years, Clemson makes mediocre teams look good. Hopefully Dabo makes the necessary changes in the offseason. The once analyst now defensive coordinator making $1.4 million a year experiment is over.

We are going to get a big a$$ dose of it
Because that’s the worst film you are going to see against the triple option. Our linebackers (specifically Sammy Brown) were totally and completely unprepared for it.
And if you think that scrub qb for Citadel was tough to wrangle with his fake pitches… then give sellars some space to run we’ll see how that goes
The path to beat USC is to make Sellars throw the ball.
If Beamer doesn’t come out running the speed option and the triple option, I’ll be shocked.

You know anyone in their right mind is going to try the triple option on someone who fell flat on their faces against the week before their game.

Well, I ran the option in high school for a couple of years and I can tell you..

making the pitch is not as easy as it looks. ANd the backs have a tendency when they first start doing it to LOOK UP at the db or linebacker.....Things can go south in a hurry. What will suck, if they can pull it off...is that if they run it successfully a few times...Harbour is going to go deep and I can just about bet the farm that he will be WAy behind our DB......

Some key injuries contributed but the honest answer is we did not prepare well for the option. BV always had us dialed in for the one week of the year we had to face it against GT. That seems to have fallen by the wayside with the current DC.

A lot seems to have fallen by the wayside with this DC. The lack of preparation on this defense for opponents and bad tackling is alarming. Don’t know what Goodwin does all week….

You will remember Stanford earlier in the year running speed and triple option concepts for 236 yards
We got bailed out because their qb stinks at passing and threw 3 picks

We were giving the QB all day on the option and losing outside leverage, and were reacting big time to the fake pitch
The LB’s should have the QB and is supposed to square up the qb and leverage him back to the inside and hit him square in the mouth whether he pitches it or not
They seemed to be picking on Sammy Brown. It was obvious that he was not well coached and prepared for this game. Talent will only take you so far

The triple option is hard to defend.

Our starters could have handled it because they are in advanced classes when it comes to learning the game. Our backups, as individuals had great difficult keeping to their assignment rather that straying off to try and do another player's job.
We had that issue for years before Jimmy Greenbeans got behind center and rode the defense's butt like a rented mule screaming "Take your man out and let your teammates handed the others. We probably don't have anyone who can simulate the triple option for practice.
I remember seeing Tig Willard standing still with a deer in the headlights look on his face. Paul Johnson would run us to death and our coaches were clueless about that system back before Dabo hired Brent Venables.
So yeah, I know exactly what our problem is and wouldn't be surprised to see the coots run it Saturday. I hope our starters, or the majority of them, get to play this coming weekend.

QB reads the DE... if they crash, the QB keeps it, if they don't, QB gives it to the dive man. Same read the QB has on the RPO a lot of times as far as the first read on if they are going to hand it off or not.
If DE stays home and QB keeps it, DE should hit the QB and make him pitch.
LB has pitch man.
Yesterday, the DE was crashing to try and get the dive from behind and that left the QB alone and the LB took the pitch man leaving the QB alone to turn it up and get some good gains.
The dive works when the D lineman don't have gap integrity. Perfect example was the announcers saying there were a couple of times our DT were trying to swim move their lineman and to do that, they left their gap giving the dive man easy 5-10 yards through one of the A gaps (between the center and OGs)

A good cut block works on that too....
We delt with that all the time vs Paul Johnson and the yellow jackets. Jimmie Greenbeans was the perfect scout team QB.
I think Wes has done a good job and even though he is horrible in press conferences, he is not a bad DC. A DC like BV is a difficult standard to maintain.
We were very lucky we kept him as long as we did.... the fact Tyler has stayed at Clemson says a lot about what the Venebles think of Dabo and Clemson.
