Elevation changes. Difficult green complexes. It's a U.S. open type course. The Open at St Andrews won't be any better manicured and you will love it.

I guess I get it, but I've paid 20 bucks to play at better looking courses than that.

The constant freight trains are a nice feature, though.

That course is exactly the way it's supposed to be

wind burned, dry, hard as a rock, and hilly. I think it's awesome from a setup and design standpoint. I love it. Especially love it that these boys aren't getting pristine perfect conditions they always get. I love to hear the whining from some of these guys. Ice up son!

I think the U.S. Air Force landscaped that place with practice bombing runs.

Chambers Bay is a fantastic golf course - not meant to be

green and lush like the Augusta National, Winged Foot, Oakmont, etc., etc. - the usual Open courses. As previously said the fairways and greens are Fine Fescues and the roughs are tall Fescues. These grasses do much better in climates like in Washington state, particularly when mowed low and watered less frequently. Balls are meant to run out and the game can be played closer to the ground using different types of shots just about everywhere. When have you seen players putt from fifty yards off the green at other US Open courses? It takes imagination and creativity to play well at this and other true links courses.
Professional golfers know exactly how far they can hit the ball and usually are pretty accurate in their direction. With soft fairways and greens, they know just about exactly where their ball will stop. On a course that is hard and fast, they cannot always predict where their ball will stop or have the ability to stop it where they want. Therefore they have to think more about every shot and then execute it in possibly a different way. I think it is fantastic!
How many of you have played golf in Scotland or Ireland - or Chambers Bay? Try it - you may love it!
