Tennessee increases ticket prices by 10% in to help pay athletes - "TALENT FEE"

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In what's believed to be the first arrangement of its kind, Tennessee fans for all sports will be charged a 10% "talent fee" on tickets to help pay athletes as part of the new revenue-sharing plan set to begin in 2025.

I had understood schools were prohibited from directly paying players NIL. Maybe that rule is changing. Though it seems like there are no rules

This will be separate from NIL. Revenue will be shared by the schools with the players. I expect players will eventually be employees of the university, possibly not even students. Just a matter of time.

If that’s the case, then they should pull the scholarships and give them to kids that really need it!

I think if they choose to pay players then players should pay for schooling. This is getting absurd, why don't we start paying students everything they have an academic achievement that schools profit from. Why don't we pay the students who write papers that get published. This stuff just ticks me of, you're in college to learn and if that isn't your primary concern you should pay for that right vs getting a full ride and paid to play a sport. The military don't even get school fully paid for. Wth has happened

That's how you guarantee the eiite talent goes elsewhere

...to schools that pay revenue sharing, scholarships, and have strong NIL support.

Under the proposed agreement (not yet approved by the lib judge), schools will pay athletes $25m ish per year per school. Athletes can still get NIL but it has to be a proven business case…not $1M for nothing. The thing is schools have built their budgets around outlandish salaries for ADs, coaches and staff plus never ending gold plated facilities. They need to tighten their belts and not try to push this off on the fans

Fans are expected to suffer in silence. Pay the bill no matter the cost. I, for one, will buy no future tickets if a fee is tacked on to pay players. Already give enough.

This whole situation is a cluster. I don’t disagree with what you stated regarding 25 mil per year. I just don’t see how that is possible for 75% of schools to agree to. I think Clemson, could possibly do it. But there would be some major changes. We have a stadium and fan base that could support. Lord help us if we start losing though. Our athletic department would be wise to study how FSU navigates a losing season while beginning to start implementing a surcharge for athletes. Not saying they are doing it yet, but it’s likely coming.

What happens to the other schools though. How does Wake Forest or BC come up with that kind of money. Honestly NC State, GT, VT Will have issues. There stadiums are like 10-13 thousand fewer seats than Death Valley. That’s 8 million a year less for those schools than what Clemson generates.

It just does not seem doable for everyone. So how is this going to get split up? You can’t force East Carolina to pay that kind of money. If I was there President or board, I would not agree. If you don’t have the money how can you pay?

I am sure there will be a NFL like exception that the federal government will agree to for colleges to return to a salary/ expense cap system. Just makes me sick that we have to have government action/ involvement to have amateur sports.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That part of the agreement has already been nullified.

It violates the Sherman Antitrust Act, the NCAA vs Alston SCOTUS decision, and the injunction in the Tennessee/Virginia vs NCAA federal case.

This isn't NIL******

The athletes should be happy. That's 10% more revenue added to the "pot" that has to be shared.

I hope some judge sees this and forces them and the other SEC professional teams to pay for the talent they steal from other teams. Just like trades in the NFL or MLB, if you take our DB, we get to take a QB of yours and 10 million.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would violate federal law.

Genius, bring the players in with “professional women”, then have the fans pay for it and disguise it in the books as “talent fee”.

I mean Georgia has been doing this for forty years and they never thought of that

They’re the first to do it. You can bet everyone else will follow.

In the brave new world of college football there is more money than ever, for everyone involved. Players, coaches, broadcasters, admin. The fans will always pay more.

Honestly, I think its a good idea.

Soon and very soon - schools will band together and set limits on NIL money for each incoming class along with guaranteed incremental increases. The schools will establish a clearinghouse run by skeleton staff but great accountants. Overages will result in fines.
MLB, NFL, NBA, WNBA all have caps. All the framework exists.
Unsustainable - that is where we find ourselves.

Violates federal law. No 3rd party can interfere in private NIL deals or cap them, or set conditions on them.
