All beef, either scorched or simmered in beer, lots of mustard, onions, relish, sometimes chili. King’s Hawaiian bun. No ketchup or mayo. Can’t stand mayo.

You’re right. I have never ever seen anyone put mayo on a hotdog. Obviously some do based on responses here.

Agreed. Mayo by itself is just wrong but I can go for slaw on a hot dog. Bonus if its a Greek style slaw.
I have a coworker who dips his fries in mayo. Just nasty.

I grew up in Anderson and thought it was the best thing ever. In my opinion, the chili doesn’t have much flavor.
Depot dog in central is delicious. I use to eat it once a week around 2020. I moved to charlotte a few years ago, my favorite now is the Dive N in Pineville.

Some of us actually know what a hot dog is made of, some of us have made said hot dogs back in our younger days, but the best I have had is a Johnsonville all the way with home made chili!

The Original owner of Holmes Lunch, Walt Holmes, was a wonderful Gentleman and he got the chilli recipe from his mother, so he told me many, many years ago. Also back in the 60,s, 70,s and 80,s they had the BEST Fish Sandwich you ever tasted.

And you better get the fish sandwiches quick. They never lasted long. Also, I believe the Holmes chili recipe was enhanced with the sweat from Bill Dickies brow while stirring.

Going back into the 50's before all the fast food joints got started, you could find good hot dogs at many small mom and pop eateries and drive ins. Once the fast food burger joints started, I guess they put the mom and pops out of business. The fast food joints never made a hot worth a s hit, and i'm not sure they even tried.
There are a few good small hot dog joints around, but not many.
I learned to make my hot dogs from my mom in the early 50's, and they are still the best I have ever had. Simple, home made chilli using ground beef, good weiner boiled, hot dog bun steamed, lots of finely chopped onions and lots of french's mustard. The secret to any good hot dog is the weiner and the chilli. If they ain't good, the dog sucks. And the bun has to be steamed.

I think hotdog preferences are like opinions, and opinions are like pigs a..holes - All hotdogs are made from them. My favorite hotdog was at Ft. Mill Golf Course back in the 70s. My mother would give me 50cents for the day, We'd play golf all monring, go into the club house and be able to get 2 hotdogs and a Dr. Pepper. Eating like a king. Nothing can ever touch that dog!

The hot dogs you get in and around Chicago absolutely suck. They put pickles, tomatoes, onions and whatever else they can put on it. I want eat them. If I do, I ask for mustard and ketchup. They get mad as he77 about the ketchup telling me no one puts ketchup on a hot dog. I tell them if I wanted a vegetable plate I would order one. I make my own at home.

Probably not the best hotdog but the dogs at Tanner's Big Orange had a special appeal to me. Mostly a nostalgic thing from teenage years. Just had to have a couple of them a couple of times a year. Digestive system couldn't stand them more than that.

2 - All the Way
I’m from Anderson and know the Thrasher family. Skin Thrasher started his business near Abney Mill on Whitner Street. The original Skins is a small building. For many years, only men went into the Skins on Whitner, while women waited in the car. Folding tables and metal chairs.
Signs on the wall
“We are in the business to sell hot dogs. Limit two beers”
“The language you use in church is good enough for here.”

Wish I'd known that in May, when I was there! Rode by the Bada Bing!

Best local one for me is G Mart in Chester. Great chilli, slaw, mustard and some Texas Pete!

Anybody ever had one from Joy Drive-In in Gaffney back in the day? I loved a foot long chili dog. Nobody made one better. It's reopened under new management but I don't believe it's as good as before.

The best hotdogs ever were the footlongs at Slots a fun in Vegas. Sometimes I would get them with mustard and chilli, sometimes mustard and sour kraut. They were delicious both ways. They were also huge. It would probably take six skins hot dogs to equal that hot dog in weight.

Barretts convenience store in Greenwood on Hwy 25 on front of Memorial Gardens has really good hot dogs. The place is always so clean too.
