Talent.

Our talent is much much better than shown on defense last night.***

There is some talent. I refuse to believe our DTs lack talent. We lack another DE, something we’ve addressed. Coaching and scheme have to be looked at.

Don’t know what to make of LB. Are they that bad? We are thin for sure. I actually like Crayton. Sammy is a good one. Woody is good. Again, scheme and coaching seem to be a problem. We need at least 1 LB from the portal.

DBs. We need another safety. We also lack depth at CB. I like Terrell and Hampton. I think Jones will be good. They looked poorly coached at times.

Not enough talent to overcome poor scheme and coaching IMO.

Bro we competed with one of probably the 3 best teams yesterday on just pure talent. Our coaching is the problem

We didn't compete with them on just pure talent. Our defensive front got pushed around repeatedly. That's talent.

No offense to anyone, but I’m not sure how anyone can look across the board at several positions and say that we have plenty of good talent. There has been a precipitous drop off in talented depth since 2018. We have good players in spots, but not nearly enough.

Currently, we are not elite at high school recruiting and we are certainly not elite at using the portal. Better start getting on with the game of modern talent acquisition and roster management.

That one play where they ran the reverse and two different guys completely missed the tackle is a good example. I get that they probably didn't take the best angle, but one of the reasons they took a bad angle is Texas was just quicker to the spot. That's kind of an indicator that there's somewhat of a deficiency and physical talent.

Yeah if we had Adrian Peterson at RB, Deion Sanders at CB, Lawrence Taylor at LB, Nmdomakung Suh at DT, Julius Peppers at the other DE, Ray Guy as our punter, maybe even sprinkle some Randy Moss at WR, and we would have the best coaching staff in America.

Re: Coaching

Dec 22, 2024, 1:34 PM

I agree we are getting out coached in certain areas. But look at certain positions like DE and LB. Come on. RB too. Nowhere near the elite levels needed.

This is where three or four extra takes in the portal over the last two years could’ve been huge. But that’s what we’ve been saying now for years.

Quit with the silliness of self limitation for no reason. Until we start recruiting better and becoming elite at talent acquisition, we will struggle against elite teams.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep

Dec 22, 2024, 4:56 PM

Major issues at DE, dire need for a competent punter, absolutely no depth at RB or LB, and Terrell got severely exposed against the better teams on our schedule revealing a serious need for a lock-down #1 CB.

Dec 22, 2024, 5:03 PM [ in reply to Re: Coaching ]

One thing people are missing is that even if a brand new defensive coordinator comes in next year, it's still going to take a year or two to get more Talent to get back to being an elite defense. If a new coordinator comes in next year, it'll probably look something like it did in 2012 during venables first year. You can see Improvement but there were still a lot of issues.

We need a high class running game...has not been around for 4 games...not Mafah fault, he is playing hurt, when he was healthy he was a horse...we need a quality middle linebacker...Sammie ain't it right now, can't recognize and plug holes...does his mother count tackles...he missed 4 big ones vs Tx(held big time on one) you fill the hole at the line of scrimmage not ten yards downfield...Sammie in the middle we have stunk,he was not ready!

ND and Michigan always have talent but never the right coach. Case in point.

Plenty of mediocre talent teams with great coaches that win. It’s coaching. Always will be.

Unacceptable for us not to have an "A" class punter playing for Clemson. At Clemson, our punting should never be a weak point. I've seen so many punters on less profile schools out kick us.

If we had adequate coach’s our talent would be better than it is. We have, as per 247, the fourth most talented roster of the twelve teams in the playoffs. Other teams are developing their three, four and five stars. We, on the other hand are not. Lack of coaching, Spiller, Goodwin, Hall, Grisham and Conn have stagnated several players development. My answer is coaching.

Re: Talent vs Coaching - What are we lacking?

It’s coaching, development, evaluation and talent. Everything.

Tackling. Clearly a coaching issue. So much of defense is about mentality and toughness. We have a very nice and soft spoken DC though. Wes is not an intense guy and I don’t see any intensity on our defense.

Development. Barrett Carter. 5 star LB coming out of high school. Great as a sophomore. But I didn’t see a noticeable improvement over his junior and senior season.

Evaluation. Cade Denhoff. He was highly rated but clearly lacks the athleticism needed to be an impactful edge rusher at the college level.

Talent. There was a noticeable difference in talent last night, especially in the trenches. Same thing was true against Georgia. The elite teams are more talented than us.

This is why our lack of portal usage has plagued us. Our positions coaches struggled at evaluating high school recruits and developing our players. Landing proven commodities from the portal negates those issues.

This is clearly changing. Will Heldt doesn’t need to be developed. He’ll come in ready to be an impactful DE opposite of TJ Parker. I expect more transfers soon. We aren’t finished.
