Taking off my orange glasses

Who has improved after their freshman season for Clemson in recent memory? We have been teased with great freshman and even some sophomore seasons of players who get their chance. Does it not seem that most of our players regress? Which players come back and up their draft stock?

Clemson and a Dabo fan, but who has improved after being coached by the staff for a couple seasons? Trotter? Barnes? Woods? Alexander? Parker? Woodaz?

I'm gonna say Vic Beasley. Dabo put him on a path to greatness and a nice NFL career by recommending him move to DE.

He's a Clemson legend and future HOFer

Blake Miller is a very concerning one to me. Freshman All American, 4 year starter. Looks very average this year.

Tristan Leigh is another. Consensus 5 star recruit, 3rd year starter, average.

Parks. 6th year guy, ESPN 100 recruit, average.

None of these guys were recruited by Matt Luke and had a few seasons of development under Thomas Austin. Those guys are a lost cause for Matt Luke, but he has been recruiting monsters this past recruiting cycle. Clemson should have one of the best offensive lines in the nation by next season.

Yeah, those guys were likely overrated as prospects during their recruitment.

These guys would be a lost cause as well for teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Kobe McCloud - no longer an after thought. He is now a good player.

Dee Crayton - although never an ‘after thought’ player, he has improved and is now a valuable backup.

Cade Denhoff - arguably a recruiting miss, he has slowly but steadily improved and has become a decent backup in this, his RSr season.

Both Sapp and O.Patt-Henry have gotten better at the TE position.

Tristan Leigh was not very good as recently as 2023 season. He has developed into a good player.

Jack Smith has supposedly improved. I say ‘supposedly’ because he may have been better than A.Swanson for at least the 2024 season. Whatever, he has ‘improved’ by virtue of getting to play.

let's throw DW4 and ETN in there.

And Jordan Leggett.

And Nate Wiggins.

Ben Boulware.

The list goes on. This is a dumb exercise. Just because ya'll can't think of anything off the top of your head doesn't mean players aren't getting developed.

This is just another dumb narrative from butthurt fans with internet access.

I think our record of putting people in the NFL speaks for itself. Nary a single one of those kids (nor any others from other teams for that matter) were NFL ready coming out of HS.

None of the aforementioned players were developed by the current coaching staff. All of the coaches responsible for developing those players have moved on from Clemson. Clemson's coaching staff is heavy laden with inexperienced position coaches who aren't the primary coach but are directly responsible for developing players who will take on starting roles in following seasons.

flak for our recent start, but we aren't going to give him the credit for the recent past?

I mean, Tom Allen is 4 games in. We can judge him on that now?

Many of the players the OP mentioned are in their 2nd year. We're going to make sweeping generalizations on a guy like P-Woo who is only a 3rd of the way into is sophomore year? Reckon we ought to see the season out and then rush to judgement?

Who (what coach) exactly IS responsible for a given player's development? I'd argue that the entire staff is responsible, not a singular position coach. Who on this board is even qualified to pass judgement on a player's development given they literally at most see the player play in games only, which accounts for likely 20% of the time they are training/playing football.

Everyone wants to throw CJ under the bus. If we are holding him accountable to being singularly responsible for RB development, ya'll should be shouting from the tree tops about what he's done with Randall after having played 5 total games after a position change.

Again, tired narrative from lazy internet "fans".

Do you consider players who left clemson over 5 years ago to be "recent memory"?

Relative to those that left in the 90s, yes.

Or are we just talking about the kids that are 4 games completed into their sophomore years? In that case would it make sense to see them play the 8 or whatever remaining games before making internet warrior hot takes on their "development"?

Bryan Breese? Tyler Davis? Christian Wilkins? All had flashes when freshman as have many others. They stayed the extra year and failed to be better.

Randall has played well as a rb for the most part. However, as a WR he failed to live up to expectations. Williams has been steady since freshman year, minus injuries.

For the ones who think I am saying this because of our record or this years results. I have felt this way for awhile. Name someone who was impressive as a freshman and became a game changer later in career

Obviously players will improve with experience and will be improved. I am more talking about those who came in highly touted or showed out as freshmen and then regressed inexplicably
