Exactly time for contracts. Once you are paid to play you are a professional. That is the only difference in college and the NFL now.

A student should have the right to drop out of school at any time he or she wishes.
But, that doesn't mean an organization set up to assist some students must be forced to accept those students into other universities.
The NCAA also has the right to set guidelines.
I maintain, even though I am probably the only one in America, who blames the NCAA (and its member institutions) for creating this problem and for perpetuating it. My solution is simple.
Rule: When you sign a student to an athletic scholarship (whatever you call it) that kid counts against your maximum number of scholarships for that sport until he or she graduates from your institution or until 5 years has passed, whichever comes first.
No one is forcing a school to sign a person to a scholarship. If Mike Norvell knew that when he signed 25 kids out of the portal they would count against his scholarship limit for either five years or until they graduated from FSU, he would be looking at a different group of players to sign.
But, the NCAA could not care less about education and degrees and graduation. So, blame the NCAA.

That could easily be abused though. They could pay a bunch of players more and they don't need scholarships, then pay some less and also give those players scholarships. It would give the teams a lot of wiggle room to stack rosters.

As I’ve stated before, what we have now can best be described as semi-pro college affiliated football. If I weren’t so addicted to Clemson sports I’d just walk away from the whole convoluted mess. The thrill is gone.

Two very different things. Two different funding sources. Two different sets of rules. Educate yourself.
You also missed the obvious. If School A stops giving scholarships and School B keeps giving them, guess which one has a big recruiting and TP advantage?

In the comments of that story is the solution. NIL need contracts to protect both party's interests. I don't have any problem with NIL the locks someone into a school for 4 years, otherwise DON"T TAKE THE MONEY! There needs to be a trade off. Don't take NIL and you have the ability to move around freely. You take $1.5 million dollars plus a scholarship? Your butt is mine so to speak.

No, if players at a low level school like Marshall think they can transfer and do better, they are the stupid ones. If you can't spell talent, you better get someone to explain it to you before you enter the Portal.

You're comparing student-athletes to people working for a company or their own business. Are student-athletes employees of the college or university? The court says they are not barred from or may be considered employees of the school (Johnson vs NCAA) but not necessarily. It is still being debated.

Bluffton you have STUPID wrapped up. So these kids have jobs? WTH is their job. Dumb analogy. They are in school getting a free education; something most of us was not afforded and probably had much better grades than a majority of them. Pathetic

And SCOTUS backed them.
Now they're going to get it good and hard.
Many will destroy their football (and academic if they have any) hopes and dreams in the portal as they sit there languishing because they decided they could go find greener pastures than the one they were recruited into.

The coach (Huff) wanted a one-way contract, guaranteed money for him without a buy-out for the University. Marshall called his bluff.
40 portal players in 2023 and 46 this year. So it should be no surprise to have players inter the portal. The last count I saw was about 40 transfers and graduations combined.
Worse, they are losing all their passing, receiving, running yardage and TDs.

realize that...aside from Clemson (for now) and the Academies...what the heck are you cheering for as a fan?
I thought the headline about Marshall's team was hyperbole...and it probably is...but not by much. I looked at how many of their players are in the portal...it's already 26, almost all on the two-deep. And another 15 or so Seniors (can't really tell anymore if they have eligibility?). They truly are looking like they'll lost nearly their entire 2-deep.
