Many people in my neighborhood are not keeping their feeder full.
Help these tiny birds out if you can. They soon will be off on an incredible journey that many will not survive. Don't let them leave South Carolina hungry.
I have 9 16oz feeders around my house and have to refill every couple days.
I am buying so much sugar ATF agents followed me home believing they could find my still.

My "ole lady" and I borrowed/liberated some gear from Chem class.
We set up a tiny still in our room for educational purposes.
In a gallon jug we added crushed popcorn seeds, some sugar, some yeast. We left that to ferment over Christmas holidays.
When we got back it had exploded and stunk up the entire "tin can" floor.

We have a rogue bear on the mountain who rips down our hummingbird feeders and destroys them. I am getting tired of replacing them so I will wait until the bear moves on.

But, this year we sadly decided to not put up our 1 sugar feeder due to our age (dementia) and needing lower maintenance.
It was sad to see one of our birdies several months ago return to the very spot he/she remembered from last several years even though the feeder was stored.
After a spell he/she disappeared forever which broke our hearts since the feeding process and watching them in all their colorful splendor is a memorable occasion to savor & enjoy.

I don't feed them anymore. Fed them every year 'til a big bear destroyed the feeder and broke the steel rod it was mounted on.

Had one get trapped in the garage. Got him with the trout net and set him free. He hovered eye level with me for about 8 or 9 seconds as to say thanks, then flew up into my giant sweetgum.

I was building cabinets in a house and had my equipment set up in the family room. It had a vaulted ceiling about 18 ft high and cathedral windows on each end. In flew a little hummy and he exhausted himself trying to get out. He would fly from one end of the room to the other and the windows fooled him thinking he could escape through them. I finally shut down my equipment, by this time it was desperate and about to collapse. It finally lit on one of the window casings, I took a long slat and eased it up to where he had settled.I made no sudden or unexpected moves and the little fella lit on the end of the slat. I slowly moved towards the door trying not to startle him, he was so tired he did not move. I carefully lowered the slat into the door opening and gently eased it outside, he looked around and knew he was free and away he zoomed.

Yes, keep mine clean and full for the little ones. Always enjoy having them around, had to rescue one yesterday from under the porch.

I'm amazed at your 9 16oz. feeders. You must be on their interstate highway. I have one 8 oz. feeder and refill about every 4 days. I have one or two hummers until July, and now have 4 or 5 which usually leave by about Oct.10.

I was away for a year as their feeders for 20 years burned.
The deal, is over years more appear each year if their is food. They will return to the same spot each year if they survive.
In Spring they eat little at feeders as they breed in SC. The deal is bugs/protein for the young.
After nesting is over is when the adults and young show at feeders.
Like most critters they are territorial (to protect food source). Best is to put feeders up around the yard.

Hey, from what I read and from your post, it is late in the season, but I bought my first ever hummingbird feeder today. Hopefully, I will get some activity this year, but I will definitely be prepared for next year.

There are many types of feeders. I use "Perky Pet" feeders. They are pretty easy to clean.
I agree with Tugaloo. It is good to have multiple feeders around the yard. They help avoid so much fighting.

I bought a hummingbird feeder after being inspired by your post last week. I have had it up for about 5 days with no an activity, which made me think I had waited too late in the season. Then tonight at about 1900, I saw a beautiful hummingbird at the feeder for the first time. Thanks for bringing this idea to us.

My 9 feeders have been on overload this past week.
That is normal as they need energy to migrate.
Males left first, the rest are leaving.
A big flock from the north arrived today and are exciting.
Keep your feeders out and full as migrants could use a free meal.

I keep all my birds fat and happy! Hummingbirds seem content with whatever my wife put out flower wise this year.
