If a change is made with the baseball program, it will be interesting to see who the AD goes after. It seems his history has been one of a bargain hunter - look at the people he brought in at Tech and the ladies Basketball coach at Clemson, none of these folks were big names.

And we are bad. I'm not a baseball fan, but it seems to me that we aren't recruiting well, and that this team is sorely lacking in talent. Teams with raw talent get progressively better. This team seems to have gotten worse.

The Tigers were also up 6-1 on the Sooners when there was a rain delay. Clemson almost let that game slip away. I felt that the completion of the Oklahoma game was when the team fell apart. I have no idea why.

It's time for Jack to go. A four year slide is unacceptable. The pattern of losses to elite programs continues. We should not wait two more years for his contract to run out. I will be contacting the BOT and D Rad to voice my feelings...this is embarrassing to a program with a winning tradition and resources to get the job done. Poor Coach Wilhelm is probably rolling over in his grave.

David Hood?, this is a well written article and spot on.
As a lifelong Gamecock I once HATED to go to Clemson for any sporting event. There is no doubt in my mind that the biggest shift in our rivalry is the MINDSET.
Gamecocks of the past would HOPE to win while the Tigers EXPECTED to win. My experiences at Death Valley and Doug Kingsmore the past several years have convinced me that many Clemson players/fans now expect/wait for bad things to happen and then fold when things go wrong.

if we don't make it to Omaha, there needs to be some coaching changes. As much as I hate to be one of those "fire the coach" people, I think it might be time to move on. Maybe Jack can find his "Chad Morris" to turn things around, but I'm not optimistic.

Thanks for writing about the elephant, or should I say Woolly Mammoth, on our baseball diamond David. Written with class towards the current coaches and players to boot. Jack has to go though IMO. If we collapse the rest of this season it would be nice if he would just retire now. He has thrown away so much goodwill, that I can't be classy about it anymore myself.

Clemson struggled against lefties all year. Roth was a left handed specialist and no one knew just how good he was. It was a perfect storm in that game but it had nothing to do with a weather delay.

Little did those fools know that it would actually be our program that would get sent packing. Ever since.

You hit the nail on the head. Never under any circumstances wish any success to any team from Columbia. If they are playing the devil still don't wish for them to win. The actions of some short sighted Clemson fans has placed a curse on our baseball team which may take years to overcome.

"because he's a legend" like they did Bobby Bowden.
Does the administration have the courage to make the change? I doubt it.
It's time for a change; the pitiful atmosphere around Kingsmore will definitely impact recruiting (in a negative way, for sure).

Sorry but a "Legend" is someone who wins a National Championship. A hall of fame coach for Jack, yes. Legend no. He is no Bobby Bowden or close to it.

Second thoughts on the article
Apr 29, 2014, 3:43 PM
|
|
I think its a well written article and to the point, but it doesn't focus on what has changed since 2010 (or even prior to 2010). That 2010 team actually overachieved in the playoffs. We had less than 40 wins going into the ACC. I know we got swept by Tech, and I think we lost series to Duke, UVA and UNC...not to mention the random midweek losses.
So what changed after 2010 or even prior to 2010 to get us to this point? I'm at the point where I do think we need a change at the top, but are there other fundamental issue that needs to be addressed. Did Barkers academic focus hurt the baseball program? Was TDP asleep at the wheel? How do the salaries for assistants/baseball budget compare to schools we compete with? Did Jack hit his head and forget how to coach?
Not to be a huge nerd about it, but if it is anything short of Jack forgetting how to coach, we could be in this funk for a while if other areas aren't fixed as well. I think the baseball program is a perfect legacy for TDP. He allowed other programs to outwork us on the administrative side. Maybe this change to Academic Common Market could be a first step back.
The music might have started to fade out in 2006 when we went to the CWS as a national #1 seed or 2007 when we got hosed/didn't put in a good bid and was sent to Miss St for the Super Regionals.

There needs to be 1 slight correction to this story. When we won against Alabama, the team did not celebrate with the Cajun Cafe. They celebrated with "The Cheap Seats" as the fans in the Cheap Seats showered them with over 25 bottles of the cheapest champagne you can get.
I do agree there needs to be a change, where, I am not sure. The attitude in the club house right now is not a good one and that creates a major problem.

IMO the slide has to do with baseball becoming a revenue sport at more schools and not being able to out recruit strictly with superior facilities.

If batters interference had been called against the coots in that first game in Omaha that lead to the eventual winning run being scored how things might be different.
The best word to describe the baseball program now is "stale"

I wasn't using facilities as an excuse. I would agree with your point. I was saying 10-15 years ago Clemson could out recruit people strictly because they had one of the bigger baseball budgets and top 10 facilities. One on an even plane with many programs, deficiencies have shown.

The player facilities are awful at Clemson! Has anyone been in the locker room? The team room? The showers are nasty. They put a couple garbage cans throughout the locker room and team room to catch the rain that leaks through the ceiling. The football team has benefited from updated player facilities and it shows in recruiting. The baseball program cannot convince a high school potential 2nd round draft pick to not sign and come to Clemson to spend 3 years in that dump. The new plans are amazing!!! It is all about recruiting and winning those kids with the idea that it would be a better experience at Clemson with all of these amenities and getting drafted 3 years later for more money rather than playing in crap town usa the next 3 years. It is an arms race of facilities. Carolina and USC have both spent over $30M building their facilities which have amazing team space. Vanderbilt and UVA have invested heavily as well. We have new outfield stands... YIPEE!!!! Get the capital campaign completed and finish the renovations and then see how the program competes. If you all want a better product.... invest!!! They will take your donations!!!

And not to be pedantic but they didn't run to the 'Cajun Cafe'. They went straight for the Cheap Seats crew primarily, and the Bushpigs who were fortunate enough to have set up next to them for years. Very cool picture of it which hangs near the ATM in the Esso, now that's a great student memory.
