she further guarantees her untouchable status. If, for some reason fortunes reversed and she had several losing seasons and got fired, there would be riots in the street and buildings burning because of her victimhood status.
Here's what Dawn needs to understand: Men compete on a higher level than women, in that they are bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic. That makes their game, unless you have a friend or family member involved in women's basketball, more fun, exciting, compelling and interesting to watch. That's not a knock on women or women's sports - not at all. I have daughters who played sports growning up, and I supported and encouraged them every step of the way, volunteering and attending hundreds of swim meets, soccer and locrosse matches. I would do it all again in a heartbeat; my girls competed, had fun, learned some valuable lessons, and grew as young women. But, if they put on helmets and pads and decided to play in a women's football league, it would be absurd to demand that the masses of sports fans care as much about that as they do, say, Clemson football, or The Dallas Cowboys.
Dawn Staley is an amazing basketball coach, and what she has done for women's basketball at Coot U is truly incredible and admirable, and worthy of praise and recognition. But in most sports, including basketball, men compete at a much higher level, and put a product on the floor that because of that, people in general find more exciting and compelling. That's not wrong, and it's not unjust in any way; it's just life, it's reality.

I understand how someone could disagree with her, she’s brash and pretty misinformed. But trotting the ol’ “shut up and shoot the basketball” is the worst response. Somehow because she plays basketball instead of trolling internet she’s not afforded the right to free speech? Somehow because of her success and the media seeks her opinion she’s not afforded the right to free speech?
Understandably if thats your opinion, so be it. But I hope you don’t gripe when you feel like others are being silenced by the media or when other coaches and I hope you do when other athletes and coaches espouse opinions that align with your own.

Reading comprehension isn’t the issue here, loose use of language is the issue. OP said Staley “needs to shut-up”, need is a requirement by very definition. OP is saying Staley should be required to keep her opinions to herself. That would be a violation of the first amendment were she compelled to “shut up”.
OP then clarified his point. He didn’t intend to imply she should be compelled to silent, but more specifically it may be wise for her to minimize her public posturing. An opinion that I would agree with and that doesn’t imply a violation of rights.
It’s unlikely that OP ever felt that her freedom of speech should be violated but to take his statement at face value, which is what strangers do when they communicate with each other, it very clearly stated that he believed her rights should not be the same as others.
I think we should all strive to be more careful of what we say and understand that the meaning of our statements are not strictly our own to determine, dialogue requires two participants and the audience is an active participant. I’m as guilty as anyone but it bears repeating.

I don’t agree with her here (or very often at all tbf) but her saying this is no worse than the rants Dabo goes on. Just because we don’t agree with doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the right to say it.
I tuned her out a while ago and wouldn’t know what she says if she wasn’t posted on here so much.

but im not sure exactly what she means.....is she referring to UConn or a few more marketable players getting more coverage? She didnt outright say it.
I think she is saying that the womens game only gets mention of stories/headlines about players that the mainstream viewer wants to hear/see? Which, its a business, so....

She doesn't understand her job. She thinks her job is to win basketball games, and that winning is the be-all, end-all of it. In reality, her job, like all athletes and coaches, is to put butts in seats, sell tickets, sell merchandise, sell ads on TV coverage of her games. Now, she's done a pretty good job at getting SCAR fans to show up to their games, that's true. But SCAR is a women's basketball school...not much else going on there to entertain sports fans...
But women's basketball, women's sports in general, are played at a lower level. Championship women's soccer and hockey teams seem to regularly lose to U15 boys soccer teams. Are we supposed to be excited by the prospect of watching U15-boys squads compete?
Although the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship budget for the 2018-19 season was $28 million -- almost twice as much as the women's budget -- information provided by the NCAA on Friday also shows the men's tournament brought in a total net income of $864.6 million that season. The women's event lost $2.8 million -- the largest loss of any NCAA championship.
Information provided by the NCAA also shows a stark contrast in total revenue. The men generated $917.8 million, including media and ticket revenue, while the women generated $15.1 million, also including media and ticket revenue. Total attendance accounts for some of the disparity, as the men's basketball tournament had 690,000 fans, while the women's tournament had 275,000 fans.
Did you know that there are 308 teams in NCAA men's Division II basketball, and they have a tournament every year, too? Have you ever seen one of their games on TV? I'd be interested in how the NCAA Division I women's basketball coverage and tournament spending and setup compare to the men's Division II events.
Did you know that there are 124 NCAA men's Football Championship teams? They have a playoff championship every year. Have you ever seen one of their games on TV? There are also 245 Division II and Division III football teams. Ever see them on TV?
I cannot prove it, but I suspect that more NCAA women's Division I basketball is on TV than men's Division II. Why is that? Why are FCS football games seldom on TV? And Division II and III football games? Never heard on one being on TV. Why not? Isn't football a "revenue" sport?
In last year's women's tournament, there were complaints that their locker rooms were subpar compared to the men's. I wonder what a leading Division I women's basketball team locker room is like compared to a leading Men's Division II team's.

Continuing...
Let's consider some attendance figures for NCAA basketball, looking at 2018 as the last season unaffected by COVID restrictions [I had this data about 2 years ago, so the covid stuff was mor applicable than it might be today]
NCAA Men's Division I regular season 351 teams 5,324 games played 24,525,640 total attendance 4,607 average per game
NCAA Men's Division I tournament 692,859 total attendance 19,246 average per game
NCAA Men's Division II regular season 301 teams 4,262 games played 2,697,895 total attendance 633 average per game
NCAA Women's Division I regular season 349 teams 5,214 games played 8,108,291 total attendance 1,583 average per game
NCAA Women's Division I tournament (*) 10,500 average per game
(*) Since first rounds of women's games are played at higher-seeded team's home court (like men's NIT), those games are counted among the regular-season totals, the "tournament" figures above only include the neutral site later-round games and are obfuscated somewhat by aggregation (perhaps this is more discrimination against the women...they don't even keep good records of attendance at tournament?).
