I saw a very interesting feature once on those who manage the horses and take care of the harnesses for the Arlington funerals. Also very dedicated and hard working folks

Yep, soldiers plural. 3 unknown soldiers are buried there in that tomb. Speaking of that, there are still about 72,000 soldiers still unaccounted for from WWII, the vast majority due to not being able to identify them. Going back to the tomb of the unknown soldier. One was a soldier they later identified through DNA and his body was removed and buried elsewhere. He was a pilot shot down in Vietnam. The three bodies there now are soldiers from WWII, WWII, and Korea. I believe that is pretty accurate. Someone can correct me if I am off.

An amazing thing. Snow, ice, extreme heat, rain, storm, they are there. One of the greatest military tributes there is. Then there is what they have to go through to even get in those positions, including memorization of Arlington Cemetery, a a very sprawling place.

That was one of the military occupations that I was shown when I first entered the army if I extended my time beyond the 2 years required by the draft. When I saw what discipline that it required, I decided quickly that I wouldn't have had what it takes to acquire that honor .

clover65® there is a great book “Sacred Duty” by Tom Cotton that goes into many duties of The Old Guard and the history of it. When you speak of discipline, if the book is accurate, I can see why you would say that

Arlington is one of the most solemn places I have ever visited. The sheer number of graves, and how perfectly they are preserved and placed, is enough to make anyone appreciate their sacrifice.
Arlington is a must visit for all Americans IMHO.

Arlington is a must visit for all Americans IMHO.
I agree on the Arlington National Cemetery. I have also been to the American Cemetery in Normandy. They both will bring a tear to your eyes.

There is a marked grave of an unknown Confederate soldier on a hillside in the middle of Abbeville. I drive past it several times a week and had wondered why all the relatively new markers were being placed there.
