So..... is Goodwin "leaving", or was he "let go"?

I'm kinda seeing both in all the posts, and, of course, Clemson hasn't made a formal announcement yet. But for him to already have a gig, it sounds more like him leaving than Dabo letting him go. But what do I know....

Doesn't matter. There won't be a formal announcement until there is a replacement. He was probably encouraged by Dabo to go to Oklahoma.

Bingo, I feel like if he was leaving to pursue another job we'd have that announcement, but since it's closer to a "firing" we probably don't get an official announcement until they're ready to announce the next guy.

If he left (quit), he owes the university $$$ If we was let go (fired), the university owes him $$$
I am guessing it will be announced as a mutual agreement to part ways.

Why would he quit or even do a mutual parting of the ways when millions are on the line.

Maybe he wanted to go? Maybe he knows he's underachieving and harming his future opportunities? Maybe he knows he has an option to go work with BV again, and prefers that mentorship over his current situation. Tons of potential scenarios.

But 3 million is the buyout if he’s fired. That’s only 2 years salary. 2x is not much in the grand scheme of things, especially if he lands a job making comparable money somewhere else. No bridges burned, landed a very desirable job working under one of the great D minds in the game, and an opportunity to make comparable money. Why would he not?

and all parties are satisfied. I don’t have to fire you, you get to save face by leaving on your own and have a great landing spot, everyone wins. It’s the outcome you hope for.

As far as I'm concerned, it's better that Oklahoma has him than us, but I'm sure that nobody remembers my feelings when Goodwin was hired as our DC. I knew his days as our DC were numbered bc he had no coaching experience. I hate it more than anything that it was our team and our fan base that suffered most from Goodwin's hire as our DC!!!

so there must be something there. Dabo is one of the most successful coaches in college football and BV is one of the best DCs in college football. I trust their judgment, as both wanted to give him a chance. I hate it didn’t work out, but it’s over now.

Until this year, defense has been the strong suit of our team under WG.

Including 8th last year.
By all measures it looked like a good hire… until this season. I’m guessing his voice just lost its luster and kids weren’t feeling very motivated. Not high enough energy, like is needed on defense.
But the bottom line is, until this season it appeared to be a good hire. Not sure where some of yall are getting the “I knew it” thing from. Yes, WG was a risk, but so was Dabo Swinney, Chad Morris, Tony Elliott/Jeff Scott. Sometimes things work out in a hiring process, and sometimes they don’t, but there was absolutely no factual basis to suggest Wes wasn’t getting the job done prior to this season.

Guess your intuitions are always correct or do you only gloat when they are correct? BTW do you have a link to your thoughts when Dabo was hired?

His buyout would have only covered 24 months of salary. If you have no options, you may make them fire you and take the buyout. If you have viable options with comparable pay, there is absolutely 0 reason to do this.
We have no idea how it went down, or what we owe, but both parties have handled it very well publicly, which was the point of my original post.

There is offset language in his contract. If he does plan to go to Oklahoma (or anywhere else), the amount Clemson owes him would be reduced by his new salary.
So, say for example that BV pays him $1M/year. He's signed at Clemson through 2027. The $3.1 he's owed would be reduced by $2M.
On the contrary, if Wes wanted to leave on his own, he would owe Clemson $775,000.
There is benefit for both parties to mutually agree, assuming Wes wants to go coach at Oklahoma and Clemson also wants to move on. Otherwise it's just a waiting game to see who budges first, and that's not good for anyone.

Dont you think it was a phone call by Dabo trying to help find one of his top lieutenants find a job while also simultaneously creating an opening here? A mutual win-win?
