Stone Mountain is a monument to the Confederate Military. The confederate flag has been and always will be a symbol of white supremacy. One is history, the other is political statement. When southern states flew it as a symbol of segregation and Jim Crow laws, it wasn't about history, it was/is about white power.
I continue to be concerned that people are so adamant in insisting that it's about "heritage" when that heritage was the effort to maintain white superiority over black americans.

The Confederate battle flag is not a symbol of the Confederate military? The first, second, and third National flags were symbols of the Confederate govt. The battle flag was a symbol of the military.

> The Confederate battle flag is not a symbol of the > Confederate military? The first, second, and third > National flags were symbols of the Confederate govt. > The battle flag was a symbol of the military.
Actually it's not. The "Confederate Flag" that is generally accepted as the symbol of the "Confederate" military is quite wrong. What is known as the Battle Flag was in fact the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia which was surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.
In so far as the removal of the Cherokee Nation you bring up and interesting point. The treatment of the indigenous peoples of the this country can best be described as genocide. It is, along side of the slavery of African Americans the darkest chapter in American history. As an illustration the Phips Proclamation of 1755 struck in Massachusetts offered a bounty of 20 pounds for, among others: "For every Scalp of such Female Indian or Male Indian under the Age of twelve years that Shall be killed and brought in as Evidence of their being killed as aforesaid, Twenty pounds." The scalping was continued though not officially well after Independence from England and beyond the Civil War.
My great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee from Western NC. I am particularly aware of the tragedy of the Cherokee removal. But surely, as a Cherokee yourself, how can you in good conscience advocate the confederate flag, the very symbol of White Supremacy from the 1860's too modern day. It represents the precise mindset and thinking that resulted in the devastation of our own thinking.
Surely, as civilized men we can recognize the mistakes of our past and move forward without the burden of certain unfortunate elements of our "heritage". The American Flag has always and will forever stand for hope and the finest qualities that men are capable. It is the symbol of a promise that one day all men can live together in peace and freedom.
I respect your right to your view, though I disagree with it that doesn't men that we can't be friends. But I will end on this one point. You love Clemson as much as I do. You sit down with Artavis Scott, Deshaun Watson, Mike Williams, Shaq Lawson or any of the other African American players on our team; and you ask them what they feel when they see the confederate flag? If any one of them says it reminds them of the noble "confederates heritage" then I will never argue against the confederate flag again.

The battle flag was used by most of the Confederate army. Almost all the Georgia and South Carolina regiments carried it. The Eastern Cherokee Nation provided large amounts of troops to the CSA.
There are a lot of symbols that offend me. You going to take all symbols down that offend anyone?

No, only the one's that stand for white supremacy and segregation. The confederate flag may symbolize the confederate army to you, but it symbolizes racial hatred in the 20th century to most.

When dealing with minority rights, many, most, and any are not relevant. In the Native American community, the US flag is considered a symbol of oppression. Why is the fact that there are not many of us be relevant. By definition, a minority will be composed of fewer people.
For the record, neither the Confederate nor the US flag bother me. Having said that, if I were to be offended, I would be like most of my people and be much more offended by the US flag than I am the Confederate flag. Maybe the Cherokee Nation needs a red Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. If we went around stirring up civil unrest, then maybe our voice would be heard and our offenses would be considered. Maybe we should act like a bunch of morons and start burning sh.t down.

is history. It's a symbol of whatever you want it to be. Based on your argument, the american flag is also a symbol of white supremacy, therefore needs to come down. We came in and pushed out the indians. In fact, we did it with both blacks and whites. So now the indians have a case against the american flag, based on your "viewpoint". The only thing we lack is a shootist to kill a bunch of indians. round and round the arguments go. See where it takes us?

Agreed. As a Cherokee Indian, I am offended that the flag of the nation that massacred my people and stole my land flies over the Capital in Cootlumbia. I want it down tomorrow because I am offended.

Sort of the fact that the same Bible and "word of God" was used to justify slavery, Jim Crow, and that whites could not marry those of another race in most states (note the wording).
It's not the Bible but holier-than-thou morons who tote the same hate. Likely will turn on their lesbo #### to get off.

Since the KKK ALWAYS carried white crosses, will you advocate for the removal of all crosses in National and State cemeteries? What about the removal of all crosses from churches as they are readily in view and will surely remind all people of the KKK? Isn't this getting silly?

Actually no. The cross has been and will always be the symbol of Christ's suffering on the cross. It has been a global symbol of that for over 2000 years. That's what people see when they see the cross. In spite of it's misuse by the KKK the cross itself has never been confused with racism. The Confederate Flag was adopted by the states in modern time as their symbol of a "states rights fight to keep and maintain Jim Crow laws of segregation. It wasn't just the klan. It was, and some would argue, still is used as a statement of white supremacy and purity. I was raised in SC and I remember bathrooms labeled Men, Women and Colored. I remember "Colored Only" on water fountains and the balconies at movie theaters. And I certainly remember "White Only" signs on the doors of restaurants.
Yours seems to be an all or nothing argument which makes no sense. By the same logic the question could arise "should we ban all white sheets" or "all open fields because they klan used them for ceremonies. Should we ban all travel to Germany because the Nazi's once ruled there. Your "all or nothing" argument is simplistic and extreme.

And these people that complain about everything, and want everything changed to their liking, are going to be in trouble if and when they get to Heaven. When God gives them a front row seat, I can't wait to hear them complain that "It's too close".
Some people are never satisfied, and do not appreciate what they actually have.

I myself am wondering how long the state of Mississippi is going to be allowed to keep a confederate flag ON their state flag. I never hear that one brought up in the noise of all the sabre rattling at the state of SC.
