It's really hard not to wonder about Streeter's development

when you go back and look at DJ's high school accolades. First offers in 2017 from Oregon and Alabama. Top 10 prospect with offers to every major football school. And read this write up based on his HIGH SCHOOL career:
"Big, strong armed quarterback with generational arm strength. Has a big frame but looks lean and is well put together. Has one of the strongest arms in recent memory and has won ‘long ball’ contests with a throw of 80+ yards. Is much more than a big arm. Shows great touch, accuracy to all three levels of the field and greet natural feel for throwing the football. Understands when to take a little off, throws with anticipation and is a plus athlete as well. Has the ability to run zone read and is a very good runner in the open field. Can buy time and is accurate throwing down the field rolling out to his right or his left. Natural leader and a great teammate who is also a potential high round draft pick in Major League Baseball. Can still improve going through progressions and finding secondary receivers as well as escaping pressure. Upside is off the charts. Projects as a impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future early NFL draft pick."
And then look at what he's doing now.

TL, KB, and DW's development arc over their time at Clemson (under Streeter) was pretty flat as well. If they came in great and game ready, they stayed great and game ready. If not, heaven help them.
Stoudt in his last bowl game is the exception. Think that's when Streeter took over and a combination of Street working with him and Scott changing up the infuriating Chad Morris square peg/round hold play calling for him really helped in that game.

changes in the playbook. Chad was a knucklehead who had only one trick and really didn't understand how to get the most out of what he had. Frankly, I was delighted to see him leave.
Those who replaced him were filed and honed by Dabo.

The Cover 3 podcast guys were all very much in agreement that DJ should transfer to a school that has some actual offensive coaching and could help him, and honestly I had a hard time disagreeing with them.
Just look at Trevor Lawrence, he got progressively worse over his time at Clemson, now in less than one season Doug Petersen has him looking like the pro-bowl QB everyone thought he could be.

every season even beginning with a few early struggles as a true freshman (which is normal).
TL's 2020 season, he set every Clemson passing record (if you extrapolated out for full season) and that was throwing to freaking Cornell Powell and Amari Rogers. We also had zero run game in 2020.
Trevor's 2020 season was awesome and likely Heisman worthy if it wasn't a Covid year. And that was with no WR that could go up and get the ball.
Now, I'm not attributing that Streeter. But I'm just saying that he was much better as a junior than a true freshman.

DJ sucks. He's not a good runner or a natural athlete.

He's not a leader. He lacks confidence and charisma.
I don't blame Streeter for DJ's lack of development. I think we got blood out of a turnip for as long as we could. Unfortunately, it's not DJ's fault that we don't have someone better in years 2 and 3 of his tenure.

Don’t worry, he’ll have a whole other offseason and year as starting QB next year to keep working on it.

in practice then we have a glaring evaluation problem in recruiting.
I don't think that's the case. I think Dabo and company have hitched themselves to the DJ wagon and will ride with him to avoid looking clueless if Cade were to come in and actually move the ball down the field.

This past offseason it was
“DJ slimmed down, he’s the leader,” etc
Next offseason it will be
“The game has slowed down, DJ has a better mastery of the playbook”

So I've been thinking of who'd I'd like to see as OC...
Nov 28, 2022, 1:54 PM
|
|
I usually don't think of things like this, but what the heck
Jeff Scott - This is the easy one because of the timing of things. but eh...I'm not really feeling it. I mean, can we go back to that well? Is it time to move on? Willy Korn - this is the next person that popped into my mind. I figured if we are going after a young buc that's shown success at a group of 5 school looking to move up, he'd be the starting point. He's an young up and comer and could attract some talent. I feel like he'd be a solid recruiter as well. I see him more like a Nick Eason hire vs a CJ Spiller hire ...he's proven himself somewhere else. Or course, Streeter was at Richmond... (and CJ may be one of our best coaches at this point).
So where does that leave us? Poach someone from another Power 5 school? Get a recently fired HC?
What do you all think?

If it were me I’d buck the former player trend and go get someone with some outside experience who has learned some NFL offense in the last couple seasons, like a Joe Brady.

I thought of Joe Brady, but why would he leave an NFL OC job

for the same position at the college level. I think he'd only leave for a HC-ing position
I can't think of any other NFL OCs that we may attract...hence, asking the peanut gallery here.
Okay. Here are some other random names
David Shaw - aren't he and Dabo friends? maybe he'd want to chill in SC on the Lake for a bit. Of course, scheme wise, it doesn't really fit. Pep Hamilton - ehh. he's not great. same scheme as shaw Byron Leftwich - he may be looking for new gig soon. I could see him being a cool college coach. perhaps he switches career paths somewhere else

Still feels appropriate, no? Recognizing pressure pre-snap, too. Of course, the 5- to 7-step drop pass plays when you know the blitz is coming rather than a quick screen or some other hot route don't help...
