Why is it such a big deal for National Guard to be in Chicago?

I will preface by saying I’m a moderate republican and have been independent before, I’ve voted for people on both sides frequently.
So people are upset that a federal agency (ICE)is there to get people that are illegal in the country and breaking the law? Then 200 National Guard come to just protect the ICE facilities b/c the Chicago Police were called back by the Mayor when things escalated a few days ago?
I don’t know about you but I prefer law and order. I want people to be legal in this country just like if I lived in any other country. It’s like this is a giant piaassing contest now and people just need to chill.
I obey the law and expect everyone else to obey or face consequences for actions. That’s a fundamental part of society. Hammurabi Code from 1754BC. Without consequence for actions it all falls apart.

What are your thoughts on the other cities the military is being deployed?
Should all policing be done by the military?
If you are going to send the military from one state to another against the governor of that state's wishes, it's probably not a good idea for the Commander in Chief to threaten war on the city the military is being sent.

You just asked if it went further and further what would I think. I’m asking about currently why? Not some made up conspiracy theory like the far right before the election stocking up on staples, and making sure they aren’t traveling to avoid some giant riot when trump won.
It never happened but those far right sure thought it would. They were convinced it would. Same thing here, it’s fear mongering. Both far sides are guilty of it EVERY DAY.

You do understand the military is already patrolling other cities right? And Trump is looking to expand this. At the moment a judge has blocked him from sending troops to Portland, which he has said is burning to the ground. It is not burning to the ground. That is fear mongering. This is the current situation.
I do not want the military occupying American cities.

Or is it that you think in a few years trump will stage some coup and take control of the state governments? Bc that will never happen, nor any other conspiracy theory about how we will be fascist and have a king trump.
Same as if Kamala won we wouldn’t be socialists in 4 years. I just dislike the far sides of both. The reality is Trump will be gone in 3 years. I’m sure by then the far right will be fear mongering that whoever democrat wins will be a socialist and give all the upper/ middle classes money to the lower class.

Why will it never happen? Because people who oppose Authoritarians will resist it?
But they're not opposing a clear authoritarian move of sending in the military to localities that disagree with them. What makes you think those people would oppose future authoritarian moves?

We have a President that is, quite literally, usurping every law in the Constitution he doesn't believe he has to follow by declaring an emergency. Trump has declared...9, so far? More? And none of them, not a single one, are legitimate "emergencies".

I mean besides tax dollars. Why would it matter for troops to be in Portland? Not to mention it has over 10k homeless people, many on drugs, and that’s costing the city 700 million a year to address. Prob over a billion a year by now.

Last I checked, Spartanburg and Columbia have higher crime rates than Portland. As you probably know if you are in certain parts of Spartanburg at night you need to have your head on a swivel and probably best to be packing.

Yup. Growing up, there were places I wouldn't go at night, and I probably still wouldn't go there now. I actually feel far safer walking around a big city at night.

There’s a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things. No warrants, no due process, just rounding up anyone brown, including US citizens. Deploying the military against citizens based on lies about crime and riots (Portland and Chicago aren’t burning) is wholly un-American. If you want to deport illegal immigrants, fine. I don’t agree with it unless they are true criminals, but that’s my opinion. But violating people’s rights (including citizens and legal immigrants) and due process is not the way to do it.

In order to have fair elections.
US military troops need to be at all polling places, verify voter eligibility, have full control over ballot boxes and the counting / certifying of results.
Military run elections need to be done because local cities and states can’t maintain law and order. The Federal government needs to run all elections starting with certifying voter eligibility.
The “Law and Order” advocates are all about controlling elections from start to finish.

You want to make this about illegal immigration, but the use of the national guard isn't about immigration status. It's about forcing the police state onto the state and local citizens who don't want it.
Historically, that's been a pretty frowned upon position by the Republican Party. But it seems like the modern Republican Party wants an authoritarian state where the rights of individuals are limited.

I will try to answer, but as a lifelong civilian, I find myself on the outside looking in. In simple terms, the problem arises in that this isn't what the military is trained to do. What do we expect them to do once they are sent in? It has indeed turned into a political struggle where one party doesn't trust the other to take any action. The natural reaction to that is a push back in a way that justifies the other sides point. What about the average person on the street? While the power struggle is going on, you have state and local law enforcement asking what they are supposed to do. At the same time, you have national guard asking the same question. End result is chaos.

The military isn't supposed to be deployed to United States cities to be used against U.S. citizens. This is a no brainer, and any real conservative will know this goes against the 10th Amendment.
This isn't for law and order. Trump and his admin are trying to start unrest and turn the military on citizens to secure his power. If you don't see that, I'm not sure what else to say.

In rare circumstances, in a real emergency and not to multiple cities at once. And typically this call is made by state governors. The last time the National Guard was Federalized was over a half century ago.

IF he framed the NG coming in only to protect ICE (federal agents) while they do their jobs, then he likely has a leg to stand on...the judge in Cali ruled in his favor.
BUT - he's framing it as a "tough on crime" operation, which the NG has no business being involved in at all. I suspect the courts will use his own trolling against him.

That they are here 'illegally' is in essence just a technicality due to zero political backbone in Congress to codify the process. I say 'sanctioned' as the overwhelming majority find meaningful and productive work spread over many industries, often in critical roles that have kept the US economy humming and overall improved each citizen's quality of life as a result. They are hired by American firms and paid by American firms in every state. Our low unemployment numbers are a testament to how much in demand they have been, and still are, in our society.
ICE tactics today under Trump is essentially state-sponsored domestic terrorism. Masked agents ambushing brown people at work, home, schools, hospitals, churches, parking lots, city streets - you name it. The goal is simply to strike fear into communities and upset the daily routines of peaceful people - which is the aim of terrorist acts.
Deploying the National Guard under false and phony pretenses, which is what's happening today, targeting political opposition areas with the threat of deadly force, is anti-American on every level and an outright assault on the rule of law and the guarantee granted to states as a critical tool in a decentralized federal government that our Founders sought, and which has been largely preserved for centuries. The President has literally declared war on American cities and their people. He's said it, and he's trying to fulfill it. He's lighting fuses on powder kegs at every opportunity and sitting back for the spectacle to play out on TV, and further devolve the US into an unfree police state at the mercy of one man's whims.
