Kirk Herbstreit on 12-team CFB playoff proposal

Things are evolving regarding the College Football Playoff. Word came Thursday that the playoff committee has proposed an expansion from the current four teams to 12 teams. ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit was on SportsCenter and said that he agrees with the changes. “I think this is inevitable, and Read Update »

This has nothing to do with determining who the best team is and everything to do with lining ESPNs pockets. Since the current system was put in place, there isn't a single example of a team being ranked outside of the top 4 having any legitimate claim whatsoever to being the best team in the country. This will make the regular season much less relevant and will result in 5-6 SEC teams being in the "playoffs" every year. Who owns the rights to broadcast SEC football? ESPN..

This has everything to do with lining the NCAA'a pockets.

ESPN will make a ton of money, for sure. But, that isn't why the NCAA is doing this. They are doing it because ESPN will pay them a ton more money than they do with a 4 team playoff.

Clemson, FSU and every other NCAA school is gonna rake in a boatload of extra revenue.

Jun 11, 2021, 9:31 AM

While I'm not opposed to expanding the field, I think 8 would be sufficient.

Take the five Power 5 conference champions as automatic qualifiers, followed by three at-large teams.

Re: I still content that 12 teams is too many...

I agree 100%. I think the 4 team format has proven itself, but in a world of lowering standards for women to be in the military and participation trophies, it was inevitable that “fairness” and “more opportunity” would be invoked to expand the playoffs.

Again, I think 4 has been proven to work for the stated goal of crowning a true champion, but anything over 8 is just ridiculous.

In a few years people will be pushing for 16 or 24 teams!

I remember when the NCAA tournament expanded from 32 teams to 64. Now we have 65. And they still leave out teams that deserve to be in thanks to all the little schools with no prayer of winning in the name of fairness. I thought 32 was the right number then and I still do.

This is a 50-50 proposition that perfectly illustrates the state of today’s society. This is 50% about money and 50% about fairness equity and inclusion!

Our generation was taught if you’re not good enough work harder and get better! Now, the standards get lowered to allow more people to participate that haven’t earned it!

Re: I still content that 12 teams is too many...

Jun 11, 2021, 1:02 PM

Because you’re unnecessarily playing more games and adding teams that have no chance of winning a championship. This is not baseball or basketball. Football, the better team almost always wins. It’s not like basketball or baseball where you can get hot and run through a tournament. I would be shocked if someone outside the top four wins the championship even in this format. Maybe the top six. But so far even with the 4 team playoff we have seen a lot of blowouts.

I hear you, but we play teams hat have no chance of winning every year. Everyone does.

Maybe they should talk about eliminating some of the regular season games against the worst teams; reward them for performance, too, like in many soccer leagues, but yeah, 17 games in a season seems a little unfair to the two final teams.

Jun 11, 2021, 1:12 PM

I agree that it’s mostly about money. I think a lot of these excuses are like you said a disguise because it’s about money. But there are a lot of people that think the current format is bad for college football. A lot of people think this is not fair. But that’s a ridiculous argument because the BCS was terrible and what we had before the BCS was absurd and ridiculous. What we have now is the best we’ve ever had at this level of college football. There have always been dominant teams. Other divisions of college football have playoffs and the same teams typically win. There’s actually more dominance at the lower levels that have big playoff formats.

With an 8 or 12 team playoff would should go to a 10 game regular season and get rid of those 2 FCS cupcakes. Or keep the 12 game regular season but replace those FCS cupcakes with 2 ACC teams and eliminate the conference divisions and the ACCCG.

But none of that will ever happen because like you said ….. the money!

With a 12 team format I think the top 4 seeds should not only get a first round bye but play the 2nd round games at home. Then go on the road like now when you get to the final 4.

Jun 11, 2021, 9:34 AM

3 of the final 4 teams are still Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State no matter how many teams you add. I suspect 75% the final 4 of a 12 team playoff will look exactly like it would if they would just leave things alone. The playoff came about because there was an outside chance that the best team may not be in the championship game during the BCS era. The playoff fixed that and there has been no doubt as to who the #1 team was every year since we’ve had it. That was the goal. Mission accomplished. The playoff settled on the field what had not already been settled in the previous games played. An expanded playoff will do nothing more than fatten ESPN’s pockets, dilute the significance of regular season games and is a frivolous waste of time when determining a national champion.

People love to talk about the onside kick. That’s not why we lost the game. We lost that game because we gave up that #### kick return for a touchdown! The onside kick didn’t help, but if we don’t give up that return for a touchdown and we get the ball back I think we would’ve won the game. That kick off return just killed us!

Jun 12, 2021, 11:02 AM

So what you’re saying is that you want teams who stink it up early and finish hot to have a shot at a national championship? You do realize that some teams who do that don’t even get a shot at a conference championship and you want those teams to have a shot at a national championship? Do you want 5 or six SEC teams who have already played each other to play again? I guess in a situation like last year it wouldn’t matter that Georgia got smoked by Florida and didn’t even get a shot at their conference championship? You do realize that they were not even close to being the best team in their conference but under a 12 team playoff scenario they get a shot at a national championship? What you’re telling me is that the result of their regular season game against Florida doesn’t lose significance under a 12 team playoff scenario? Come on man. A 12 team scenario very much dilutes the significance of regular season games. You really want to put more on the student athlete’s plate by adding 3 or 4 more games thus increasing the chances for injury just so you can be entertained and ESPN can generate more add revenue? I can’t get on board with that.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so are they dropping two games from the season?

Jun 11, 2021, 10:18 AM

You be adding 3 potentially 4 more games wouldn't you? (high level games at that)

Plus (help me understand this)
Winners of the 12 means 6 teams left.
Winners of the 6 means 3 teams left.
So you'd have have an odd # of teams that gets a bye, i guess? So whoever gets that bye will be rested more than the other. Not sure how that works with 12.

8 makes more sense. 12 makes it complicated and gives an overwhelming advantage to the whoever gets that bye at the end.

It's history in the making

Jun 11, 2021, 10:56 AM

I'm surprised how many responses out there in media are almost entirely doom-and-gloom or greed.

For example, the 4-team playoff was never sustainable. We knew that.

But a 12-team playoff is vastly more sustainable by nature, particularly the way they're building this one out. It will outlive Nick Saban's tenure at Alabama, for example. Ohio State, Clemson & Alabama may still win most years for a while, but I can't imagine none of the biggest teams ever lose against any of the others; we just saw LSU do it, for example, and they used to be a disaster of a program & Alabama's homecoming opponent for decades.

I think potential 3-peats might be an inherent concern (which may be inevitable), but I'm struggling to understand why a bunch more top-rated matchups will spell the end of college football or that it's only about money?

The money is inescapable, but doesn't that HELP? The ACC Network revenue alone has already started helping here in the league, now we're talking about that kind of additional revenue being multiplied here, and also going to other leagues like the PAC12 & G5 conferences; sharing the wealth will finally coincide more with sharing opportunity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Great, everyone gets a trophy

Jun 11, 2021, 11:51 AM

So we're going to replace the true Playoff to determine the National Champion with this 12-Team Tournament just so everyone gets a fair chance to participate (regardless of whether or not they they've earned it).

Like others have noted above, the final four will likely still feature the big three no matter how many also-rans are included in the Tournament. There is no way Cincinnati or CFU or the "Cinderella of the year" makes it through a four-game gauntlet to win it all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Great, everyone gets a trophy

Jun 11, 2021, 10:11 PM [ in reply to Great, everyone gets a trophy ]

I don't understand this. We let 64+ teams into the NCAA basketball tournament. We let 14 teams in the NFL into the playoff every year, out of 32. It's *MORE FOOTBALL* to watch, and in theory they should be much better matched than random bowl garbage.

It's based on a projection of what this model would be; Notre Dame, for example, by rule can't be ranked higher than 5th. They would host the first round in South Bend & would consequently be ineligible for a bye-week like the top-4 conference champion winners would get.

in the top six!" You watch how often the SEC will have teams ranked 5th and 6th, in addition to their conference champ in the top four! They may even have end up having the 2nd round played on the higher seed's field. Anything to get three or four SEC teams in the final four! There really needs to be a limit on how many can be in from any one conference! If you aren't in the top three in your conference, you don't deserve to be in the playoff!

Needed expansion but this is ridiculous. Just stacks the deck for the SEC, ND, and other big blue bloods. This is not about fairness, but about giving the SEC, ND, and a few others second and even third chances.

If you go to eight and make it conference champions only with only 1 team per conference then everyone is part of the playoff. Every game matters, and every regular season game including the conference championship is part of the playoff. Fair for everyone, and everyone gets the same chance.

It even gives the pollsters something to vote on to decide which 8 conference champions, and the talking heads can still argue over who should have been 8 instead of 9 or 10.

Re: TNET: Kirk Herbstreit on 12-team CFB playoff proposal

I’m not in favor of expansion, but it seems inevitable. I agree with aforementioned post that it should not go beyond 8 teams. This would add a 16th game for the two teams playing in the Natty.
Consider this: Under the current/old format, half the teams ended their season on a positive note due to their bowl victory (remember how positive the BCS victory over LSU was for Clemson?). Under this expanded playoff scenario, 11 of the 12 teams will end the season with a loss.
