That is just stupid. How can you make the tournament with a losing record in your conference? The SUC should get 8-9 teams in. The ACC should get 6 teams in. Wins and losses matter. This NET ranking system doesn’t seem to take losses into account. It only takes into account the perceived rank of who you play. A loss against a perceived good team is as good as a win. Idiotic…

That didn’t help, but it was one early season game. The ACC is not horrible, and the SUC is not almighty. The truth is somewhere in between.

No doubt , this NET RANKING is idiotic... Also all these basic NET rankings formulations are basically human error rankings, ..it's based off of people making a opinion or guess at a group of teams playing another group of teams that is thought to be better then another group of teams. Then they say here is your NET ranking teams, which is basic opinions not facts that one conference is so much better then said other conference, it's a opinion again!
They say because it's a formation of this so called NET teams , then it makes it true. No it doesn't, it's being said that so called ranking makes it better because a group said it was better, (a formed opinion). You can do this type of formulation on any type of sport analogy, you are just using a algorithm based off a formulation of basic guess work. There is no strong case for this type of formulation, it's all opinion based. But they got people thinking it's a NET ALGORITHM, when in actuality it's just another formed opinion of the ranking system...

ACC has 4 teams tops, with the 4th team being UNC as they outlasted SMU and wake in ACCT and have played better to close the season. Consider this, between us and wake/UNC/SMU there was a 5 game drop off. That is a pretty significant gap in talent. None of these teams had a resume building victory. Also, UNCs late season win streak hasnt exactly come against the top of the conference with the exception of the victory yesterday against wake.

Good discussion, but any team with a 6-12 record in their conference shouldn’t even be sniffing the NCAA Tournament… the NIT is made for the teams who can’t win enough games.

Well, if they are 13-0 vs Non-Conf teams, including 2-0 against ACC (#2 Louisville & #8 GT), plus neutral site wins over ranked Michigan and Arizona, then they'll get consideration. Not a lock, but certainly considered.

SMU has 0 quad 1 wins and only 6 quad 2 wins. There is not another P5 team in the top 100 of the NET with 0 q1 wins.

I imagine the SEC will once again, like they do so often, underwhelm in the NCAAT
From what I've seen, Vandy, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Texas are not tournament teams. Or at least, not anymore so than SMU, Wake, UNC, Stanford

It's hard to talk crap about OU given that they went undefeated in non conference play that included wins over the 2 seed in the ACC and the 3 seeds from both the Big 12 and Big 10.

It cares about how you play and who you play much more than actual W/L record.
For example, going on the road to Duke and losing by 2 pts would increase pretty much any teams NET or KP rating because losing by 2 at Duke would be outperforming expectations.

It's not predictive.
But, why wouldn't losing by 2 on the road to the best team in the country be a potential good thing? Of course winning is better, but that result might indicate that you should be the #2 team in the country.
It's one of the things I've always disliked about tendencies in sports rankings. You can lose a close game to #1 and fall in the rankings...barely getting beat by the best doesn't mean you are worse than you were perceived to be before the game.

I've heard basketball journalists refer to it as such, and it does tend to track closely to KenPom. I think the biggest difference is that KenPom seems to place more weight on the efficiencies and NET has a bit more weight on schedule strength. Last week Duke had, by far, the highest rating I've ever seen on KenPom (+39.5), but still trailed Auburn in NET due to the weaker schedule. At any rate, it's a helluva lot different than something like the old RPI.

There have been at least 64 teams in the tournament for 40 years. And it's widely regarded as one of the most exciting sports events every year. The first weekend is always amazing.

Heck, they're so bad now at manufacturing eligible teams if you can't make it, outright, into the tourney there is a 'play-in' game to get included. It would have benefitted me but I don't like the three point shot nor the shot clock. They've done this to get the x-box generation interested. Hurry up and down the court and throw up a lot of shots to mimic video games. They'll get bored if they don't do this.....and let a few walking calls go if they can take three or four steps to dunk the ball. Oh, how exciting! Not.

The 64 team NCAA basketball tournament and the 32 team World Cup.
Sadly, both are about to be ruined by expansion. The World Cup is already going to 48 teams next year, and i think it's only a matter of time before the NCAA tournament expands again and ruins their perfect format. Right now the First Four in Dayton feels kind of like it's own little tournament, but once they get to 76 teams or whatever they're currently talking about, they will probably have to blow up the entire 1st round and have byes and such. Ugh.
