I am 55 years old and have never smoked anything…tobacco, weed, crack, etc. With that said, I have had plenty of chances and have been around those first two examples many times and have many friends over the years who do/have. I don’t have anything against it or the people who do…it’s just something I have never done…just never saw the need or had the desire…even while drunk. I suppose the only reason I can think of is that both parents were heavy smokers (tobacco) and I couldn’t stand the way the house and my clothes smelled because of it. Anyway, just throwing that out there on a nice cool Sunday afternoon. I’d be surprised if there are many like me out there.

My father unknowingly cured me from smoking when I was very young in the 70s. We were stationed in Ft Wainwright, Fairbanks Ak, and not long after my uncle, his brother moved up because my father bragged about the outdoor experience. Well in the winter time when its -40⁰ or colder, its hard to do much outside so we would go road hunting.

Road hunting was basically riding around fire lines and rock roads looking for snowshoe rabbits or ptarmigan birds. Young and in army, my dad didn't make much so 95% of our meat was fish and game we harvested. Well riding around in a single cab truck for hours with 2 men smoking, windows up, heat on high, and me sitting in the middle, I was smoking as much as them basically. I remember my eyes burning, my nose snotting, hating every second of cigarettes, but loved being out with the big boys plinking a rabbit or grouse or whatever. At 3-4yrs old, I could shoot a 22 rifle pretty well and I often got to help harvest dinner.

But I am sure there were times, that old truck at 40⁰ below, when the doors opened it looked like a Cheech and Chong episode with smoke bellowing out, just not their type of smoke.

Occasionally I will smoke a nice $10-$15 Cigar. Never liked the small of cigarette smoke. Never smoked weed either. I did not have to. I was the RA on my floor. The guys that lived in the room beside smoked enough that it would get into my room. My room was larger than the others and I had no roommate. There was a 6” metal piece that separated our rooms so the weed would drift over into my room. I am not sure if I ever felt any affects from it.

I could have been a jerk and turned in, but I knew they bong their way out of school with their grades. Which is exactly what happened.

I was not like a few of the other over zealous RA’s who went by the book. I had 3 rules. No excessive noise Sunday through Thursday night. Some people actually studied. If you got sick instead of making maintenance clean it up, I made the guilty party clean it up. That put a stop to a lot of that kind of stuff. My last rule was no hard drugs like cocaine or other hard drugs being used on the floor. If there was usage I went to housing to help them professionally. Never saw any on the dorm.

My biggest pet peeve was when someone pulled the fire alarm at 3 or 4 am. I really enjoyed my 1 semester at Clemson but it was just too big for me.

I had one guy who lived on my floor with his future wife. They made that work for 2 years. The dumbest thing guys smoking weed and throwing empty bottles out the window onto cars. It was the last day for students so they must have figured they would not get called. They caused over $20,000 in damage to some really nice cars. This was the only time I called the City PD. We stood outside their door listening to them laugh. When they opened the door the blood drained from their heads. They turned white as a sheet just before the PD handcuffed them. I have never figured out why they would do something so stupid. Glad I never smoked wacky weed 🤪😜
