I think Dabo's refusal to hold DJ accountable
Nov 29, 2022, 5:31 PM
|

is actually doing him a disservice and is harmful to his future. He needs to be held responsible for his actions. I remember when my youngest son was at Clemson and he began to get failing grades due to partying. His mother and I sat him down and told him he had a couple of choices: Drop out and get a job, join the military, or bring his grades up because we were no longer supporting him. It turned his life around. Not only did he bring his grades up but he graduated and became a successful person that anyone would be proud of. But it wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t held him responsible for what he was doing. I realize it may be a stretch to apply this to a QB who is having a serious downturn in his performance but the principle is still there. You don’t do anyone a favor - the person, yourself, or others when you aren’t willing to confront a problem. I also realize that excelling in a sport is not always just a learned skill - it is just innate ability that you either have or you don’t. But you can only allow someone to fail so long until you have to do something to stop it from happening. I pray for Dabo and hope he is willing to confront this QB problem for the good of DJ, himself, the team, and the fans that love him so much.

10-2 and you think no one is being held accountable. Almost every school in the country would take Dabo in a heartbeat if he wants to leave Clemson. While I may not like losing to USC I am not going to say Dabo is not doing his job. Folks, we are playing for the ACC Championship this week not sitting at home even if DJ is not the best QB in the ACC.

I am tired of this 10-2. Honestly, we were just lucky with “painful to watch” wins. This season could be easily 9-3.

Im sure youre talking about Wake, but we were a fumble and one or two 1st downs away from a victory against the coots. Notre Dame, no question, but coots? Pffft, clearly the better team lost. Right?
As it is, we're 9th. NINTH! The CFP committee seems to have more respect for Clemson than some our fans do.

I think you missed my point. I haven't heard or read of a single instance where Dabo addressed DJ's poor performance. Maybe you have but I haven't. All I've ever heard is defense of his play. No one is asking Dabo to leave, we're fortunate to have him. But no one is infallible. We all make mistakes and failure to address the QB problem - whether it is coaching, play calling, or whatever is a mistake. I would rejoice if DJ continued and we finished 12-2. But I don't see that happening unless something takes place between now and Saturday.

If your son had been doing everything he could, studied as hard as possible, never complained, still took ownership of the poor grades, and went back to working even harder only to still get bad grades,
How would you have handled that as a parent?
How do the same principles apply in this hypothetical?

Your hypothetical has no relevance to what I said. The fact was, my son had a problem that was fixable. In your scenario that is not the case. So, you miss the point. When there is a problem that is fixable, you don't ignore it - you address it. To do anything less is just negligence.

“College (being the starting quarterback) isn’t for everyone son… why don’t we take a step away and figure out the best way to make you successful.”
“Engineering (being the starting quarterback at Clemson) isn’t for everyone son… why don’t we take a look at Clemson’s wonderful business school (the transfer portal).”
“Son they just don’t teach (coach) you right at Clemson but I know you have the talent… let’s go find a teacher (offensive coordinator/play caller/QB coach) that can help you excel.”
Just three of many options.

How thoughtful that you think of this young man's future. Did you bother to think of those young men on defense that had to win games for him because he could never seem to put a game away on the strength of his arm. Did you bother to think about Will Shipley's wasted performance Saturday or that the other quarterback wasn't even given a chance to see if he could be the spark to overcome that 1 point deficit after the team could not even get a field goal to win. Of course none of the defeat Saturday falls on the OC, but I guess we don't need to hold him accountable since Dabo was sticking by "my guy".

Sounds like you and your wife are fine parents with the important basics of what is required to achieve academic success. That's the most important part ... good job.
The part of your post in which you stated "I realize it may be a stretch to apply this to a QB ..." was also an indication of self awareness.
But the remainder of your post reveals that an understanding of football is not yet your strong suit.

smarten up just a tiny bit

Dabo is never going to come out and throw his team under the bus! He has to talk with these players every day and he's going to get their backs when he's talking to the media. You think he could win one game if he came out and said "Well, DJ has times when he's a head case and I don't know what to do!"
Dabo is the best thing to happen to Clemson football...ever! It sucks to lose to SC, but the good news is that SC has not gotten better! We just had another BAD day!
Fortunately, the fans that can influence a coaching change are WAY above the pay grade of anybody on this site! And Fortunately, they are big picture folks, not knee-jerk, snowflakes like the entitled fans posting "we need a new coach!"

He could sit DJ down and say "Son, you have a couple of choices: 1) Play football or 2) Don't. Either way you are a millionaire and you won't ever have to work if you don't want to. So, um, do better and stuff?"

I honestly don't understand what you mean by holding DJ accountable. Hold him accountable for what? He's done the best he can with his gawd given talents. You can't ask anyone to do more that that. How about we hold accountable Streeter and Grisham and the mighty Dabo himself. They clearly are not doing the best they can and mighty Dabo says that "best is the standard". If best is the standard then let's have these coaches make better decisions like put Cade in and if he effs up then put DJ in. You'd have a hard time convincing me that Cade would have a passing efficiency of 27% or less.

FAN77, come off of the ledge. Nobody wins every game every season. This team and coaches put together a winning season every year. We as fans don’t have a clue as to what goes on in the Tiger Football program. Read this; 10-2. Ten + wins over 12 seasons. Instead of trying to correct the football team from your keyboard, try standing with them. These players are as human as YOU. If you have any eligibility left, and you can contribute, please contact the CU athletic department STAT!!

That's the QB group. Pretty much in sequential pecking order too.
Thats it.
There are clear understandings of the why's and why nots, known by each guy.
We develop young men in the program. We put them on the field based on capabilities and "grades" as you mentioned.
Everyone involved understands their accountability and responsibilities, both on the football field and off.
Thanks for your little story though.
Of course the leader will start on Saturday. But in case you haven't noticed, Dabo's comments made it clear the ball will switch hands if needed. Again, all players are aware of the situation. Nobody is naive like you suggest. No disservice.
