As for Clemson legend Benni Cunnigham – According to ClemsonTigers.com the Clemson legend almost never played the game at all:
“In 1974, Cunningham was a first-team All-American, the first African-American in any Clemson sport to be an All-American. He duplicated the All-America honors in 1975 as a senior.
But oddly enough, Cunningham’s football career almost did not take place. We have the wisdom of his father to thank.

Before the start of the 1968-69 academic year, Cunningham was a tall, skinny kid who played the clarinet at the old Blue Ridge High School in Seneca. He enjoyed playing the clarinet, but he did not like the work that went along with it.
What he loved to do was play sandlot football, so he decided to quit the band and join the high school team as a freshman.

A few weeks into practice, Cunningham realized he hated practice. He did not like the fact that he had to condition his body and lift weights.
“Learning the playbook was like having extra homework,” he remembered when I spoke with him for an article years ago.
“I was working harder in football than I ever did in the band, so the week before the first game, I told the coaches I was quitting the team.

Later that evening when his father came home and discovered that his son had quit the football team, it was time for a heart-to-heart conversation.
“My father was upset and said, ‘Listen, you quit the band because it was tough and now you have quit the football team because it was tough. I don’t care what you do in life…there are going to be times when things get tough. You can’t quit every time something gets tough!’
“That’s when I decided to go back out for the team and prove to myself and everyone else that I can do this.”

- With the loss in Columbia, Clemson’s lead in the series against the Gamechickens stands at 41-29-3. Of note: South Carolina has not come even close to scoring that many points (56) against Clemson in a single game again. The most that South Carolina has scored against Clemson after the 1975 season is 35 – and that was in a three touchdown loss to Clemson in 2018.

Bennie was a joy to watch play. We went to 8 games that year including Bama and the coots. I think Wake was the only win we saw. Coming off aa good 1974 this was supposed to be a good team. Not sure what happened but they weren't. I learned each year is a whole new thing and you just never know

Worst year ever with a loss to the coots. And Parker almost let Jerry Butler get away but he loved Clemson so much he accepted a track scholarship to get on campus.

a concert when I was at Clemson but it was a different Jerry. Just as good at his job as our wr was.
I remember at Md in 78 when he caught his 80 plus yard td and knowing he was gone. I stood and yelled that in the midst of Md fans. One of the best college games I ever saw in person.

Our first spotlight goes to #50 Fletcher Cothran. He is redshirt junior linebacker for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.
Fletcher “Joined Clemson as a walk-on in the summer of 2022 … enters 2025 credited with two tackles and a forced fumble in 17 career games.”.
He “Lettered at T.L. Hanna High School, where he also played baseball … chose Clemson over offers from South Carolina, Charleston Southern, The Citadel and Fordham.”.
In 2022 he “Appeared in one game while redshirting … made collegiate debut vs. Louisiana Tech.”
In 2023 he “Played on special teams in three games … made season debut vs. Charleston Southern … contributed on special teams vs. Florida Atlantic and Georgia Tech.“.
