55 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 3-8 in 1970

TLDR Version:
- A good 2-0 start! But, sadly, that start is followed by a 1-8 finish.
- But there is great news in 1970 as well: The iconic Clemson Tiger Paw is born!!!

Season Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1970 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1970 NCAA University Division football season. In its first season under head coach Hootie Ingram, the team compiled a 3–8 record (2–4 against conference opponents), tied for sixth place in the ACC, and was outscored by a total of 313 to 164.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Clemson HC Hootie Ingram:

From: https://clemsontigers.com/former-clemson-head-coach-hootie-ingram-passes-away/

Worthy of Note:

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“July 21, 1970 – Clemson announced the use of a new logo…the Tiger Paw. With the aid of Henderson Advertising Agency, the Tiger Paw became the new trademark of Clemson athletics.

Oct. 31, 1970 – Don Kelley had the greatest return game in ACC history when he gained 223 yards on interception and punt returns in a 24-11 win over Maryland. He had a record 167 yards in punt returns, including an 85-yarder for a touchdown, and also had a 56-yard interception return.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

According to Wikipedia:

“B. B. Elvington, Jim Sursavage, and Ray Yauger were the team captains. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Tommy Kendrick with 1,407 passing yards, running back Ray Yauger with 711 rushing yards and 30 points scored (5 touchdowns), and John McMakin with 532 receiving yards.

Two Clemson players were selected by the Associated Press as first-team players on the 1970 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: offensive guard Dave Thompson and defensive back Don Kelley.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Results:

September 12 The Citadel* W 24–0
September 19 Virginia W 27–17
September 26 at Georgia* L 0–38
October 3 at No. 15 Georgia Tech* L 7–28
October 10 No. 9 Auburn* L 0–44
October 17 at Wake Forest L 20–36
October 24 Duke L 10–24
October 31 at Maryland W 24–11
November 7 at Florida State* L 13–38
November 14 North Carolina L 7–42
November 21 South Carolina L 32–38

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Even after the loss to the Gamechickens, Clemson’s lead in the series vs. South Carolina is still 38-27-3.

Also in 1970:

ClemsonTigers.com mentions this important event for the Clemson baseball team:

“March 7, 1970 – Clemson played its first two games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers defeated Louisville 10-0 and 8-1 in two seven-inning games. The field featured a “Crosley-like” terrace around the outfield fence that gave the field a more closed-in perspective and reduced maintenance for drainage purposes.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-baseball-timeline/

As for the Clemson Tiger Paw:
- According to ClemsonTiges.com:

“When Hootie Ingram succeeded Frank Howard as head coach in 1970, he believed the program needed some changes to its image. Therefore, he set up a meeting with Sports Information Director Bob Bradley and other administrators.

One of the items on the agenda was the logo for athletics, which had been an image of a real Tiger or a block “C” for many years. The discussion went up the food chain and eventually reached the desk of President R.C. Edwards, who fully supported Clemson athletics to the point he actually ran down the Hill with the team prior to a game his last fall as president in 1978.

Edwards was good friends with Clemson graduate Jim Henderson, who had an advertising firm in Greenville, S.C., so he asked him to come up with some proposals.

Henderson delegated the design of a new logo for athletics to John Antonio, who had spent most of his career with the company working with corporations

Antonio wanted something that would make Clemson stand out.

One day, Antonio brainstormed an idea to create a logo in the image of a tiger’s foot. He contacted the Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Ill. and asked for a plaster-of-paris cast of the imprint of a tiger’s paw.

In June 1970, Henderson invited Clemson officials, including Howard, who was still the athletic director, to a meeting in which they would unveil this unique logo.

There was tension in the room as Howard basically showed no reaction. However, that all changed when Antonio pulled out an orange Clemson helmet from under the table. He had affixed a white tiger paw to it. It was unusual in those times to have any logo on a college helmet.

“That helmet made a big impact on Coach Howard,” recalled Bradley years later. “He was so impressed that he wanted to bring that helmet back to Clemson and show everyone.”

It did not take long for the Tiger Paw to be approved by the Clemson administration, including Edwards.

Clemson unveiled the Tiger Paw on July 21, 1970 with a blitz of press conferences around the state (Florence, Charleston, Columbia and Greenville), plus trips to Charlotte and Atlanta.

https://clemsontigers.com/the-last-word-tiger-paw-turns-50/

And in another ClemsonTigers.com article:

“The Tiger Paw might be the most widely recognized school symbol in the nation. It is something unique to Clemson and Tiger fans are very proud of the logo. It’s been Clemson’s logo since 1970 and it as much a part of Clemson as some of the legendary heroes that brought fame to the school in its athletic history.”
- Sam Blackman on ClemsonTigers.com

Spent most of that season in Walter Reed Army Medical Center and was confined in traction to a bed in a ward with at least 30 guys ( but with some beautiful nurses). Not much interest in sports related things. Arrived there in mid October after s short stay in a hospital in Japan.

Today will be another double feature.

Our first player is #55 Makhi Williams Lee. He is a true freshmen defensive tackle for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Makhi was a “Disruptive interior defender who was one of Georgia’s most productive defensive tackles”.

He was “Ranked by ESPN as a four-star prospect and the nation’s 28th-best defensive tackle and the 50th-best overall player in Georgia … one of the most productive defensive tackles in Georgia who finished his career with 230 tackles, 61 tackles for loss and 26 sacks in 38 career games … had at least one tackle for loss in 18 of his final 20 games … also added 15 quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries … named 2024 DeKalb County Defensive Player of the Year”.

He had offers from Texas Tech, Oklahoma, NC State and East Carolina but he enrolled at Clemson in the summer of 2025 as a pre-business major.

Harris “Entered Clemson as a national top-100 recruit who was a four-year starter at Odessa Permian of “Friday Night Lights” fame … enters 2025 having played 1,007 offensive snaps over 22 games (eight starts).”.

In high school Harris “Helped Permian to a 9-2 record in 2022, bringing Permian’s four-year record to 32-14 in his career … four-time All-District selection, earning second-team honors as a freshman and first-team accolades in each of his final three years … four-year starter on the offensive line … became first freshman to start along the offensive line for Permian in at least 11 years … first-team all-state in Texas as a senior and was an honorable mention selection as a junior … second-team Academic All-State as a junior … All-Permian Basin first-team honoree as a senior … played right tackle, right guard and center during his senior year … rated as the No. 1 center in Texas entering the 2022 season according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football”. He “also played baseball his freshman year and was a weight athlete on the track team his final three years”.

In 2023 he “Grew from a key reserve into a starter by the final month of his freshman season … played 460 offensive snaps over 10 games (five starts) … Clemson went 5-0 in the five games he started … ACC Honor Roll selection … played 22 snaps in collegiate debut vs. Charleston Southern … played 25 snaps in Clemson’s sack-free win vs. Florida Atlantic … played nine snaps in a win at Syracuse … played 62 snaps as Clemson rushed for 207 yards vs. Wake Forest … played 17 snaps in Cade Klubnik’s 314-yard passing performance at Miami (Fla.) … played 72 snaps in his first career start, helping propel to Phil Mafah to a career-best 186-yard rushing performance vs. No. 12 Notre Dame … played 44 snaps as Clemson reached 200 passing yards and 200 rushing yards vs. Georgia Tech … played 71 snaps as Clemson produced 466 yards and no sacks vs. No. 20 North Carolina … played 59 snaps and helped power Clemson to 219 rushing yards at South Carolina … played 79 snaps in Clemson’s fourth-quarter comeback victory Kentucky in the Gator Bowl.”.
