Clemson won 5 of 7 games – and 4 of those 5 wins were via shutouts!
And Clemson wins two games on the Gamechickens home field (wins over Citadel and South Carolina)! And the 1918 Wofford team still hasn’t shown up for its game at Clemson!

According to ClemsonTigers.com:
Nov. 16, 1918 – The University of South Carolina athletic authorities provided the use of their stadium to Clemson and The Citadel for their annual game. South Carolina was playing at Furman that day and the field was not going to be used by the Gamecocks. The game was played at Columbia because the military officials from both schools would not allow players to be absent from any military duties due to athletic events. Since the game was played in Columbia, both school’s cadets and football teams were able to make the trip to Columbia and return to duty on time. Clemson’s John O’Dell scored the game’s only touchdown, as the Tigers won 7-0. Both teams made it back to their campuses before their passes expired.

WYFF4.com reported on a story in the Tiger from 1918 that the team had to play amidst a pandemic (that sounds familiar). The pandemic was so bad that the Wofford football team failed to make to Clemson out of pandemic concerns:
“A group from Clemson was set to meet the Wofford football team at the train station, but the team never arrived.
“Everyone was anticipating a grand scuffle,” a reporter wrote.
A separate story in the newspaper revealed a telegram was sent from Wofford saying the team was on the way, then a second telegram “said that the military authorities would not grant their permission to come over and play the game.”

“‘Stump’ has played varsity ball three seasons. He is good at forward passing, line plunging, and is a wonder at broken field running. As Captain of the team he is going to make the football world sit up and take notice.”

Harvley, Brigadier General Switzer (acting commander of the Twentieth Division, Camp Sevier), and Colonel Lewis VanShaick (commander of trains and the military police) speak to the crowd. Several thousand others revel outside the hall with fireworks, ringing bells, waving flags, and throwing talcum powder (in lieu of confetti, the local supply of which had already been exhausted).

This war quickly becomes known as the “War to End All Wars” because people were convinced that countries would never again engage in such a bloody horrific conflict like this one again. “Never Again” (perhaps that sounds familiar).
Sadly, we know that this belief was shattered fairly quickly!
