“Bertie Cecil "Stumpy" Banks (July 11, 1898 – November 15, 1960) was an American college football player and athletic director. He was a prominent running back, receiving five varsity letters for the Clemson Tigers. He scored five touchdowns against Furman in 1917 for a school record. He caught two touchdowns against rival South Carolina in 1916. Banks was captain of both the 1918 and 1919 teams. He was selected All-Southern by John Heisman. After college, he was athletic director at Claflin University.”

The previous year (1915) Clemson beat Furman 99-0. This year that game was a just little bit closer at 7-6.
After the two teams went scoreless the previous season, Clemson again shutout the Gamechickens in 1916, this time recording yet another one of Clemson’s multiple blowouts over the Chickens at this point.
Clemson now led the series with the Gamechickens 10-3-1. The series became fairly one-sided very early in its history. Eight of Clemson’s 10 wins in the series (including this win in 1916) were via shutout.

“March 27, 1916 – Clemson defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 4-2 in the first game played on Riggs Baseball Field. Clemson played on this field until the 1970 season.
April 29, 1916 – Elmer Long pitched a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over VMI.”
It was Clemson’s second no-hitter. The first occurred just three years earlier in 1913.
