The Western front of WW 1 is bloody, violent stalemate. Each side is dug into trenches that see little movement in terms of advancing. In 1915, the Germans tried to change that by being the first to break the agreement not to use chemical warfare. It was so successful aht eve the Germans were unprepared for its success:
