114 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 3-5 in 1911

Some seasons seem to have more information available than others. The 1911 season seems to have been one of Clemson’s more forgettable ones.

“The 1911 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson Agricultural College—now known as Clemson University—as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) during the 1911 college football season. Under second-year head coach Frank Dobson, the team compiled an overall record of 3–5 with a mark of 2–4 in SIAA play. Paul Bissell was the team captain.”

The Florida Gators note their 1911 game against at Clemson. According to UFLib.com:

Next, the Florida team traveled to Clemson and the "dope" had the Gators as fifteen point underdogs. Clemson scored a touchdown early in the game, missed the extra point, and failed to score on subsequent drives. With eight minutes left in the game, Taylor made a spectacular 35 yard run into the Tigers’ end zone and kicked the point-after. The score remained 6-5, Florida victorious.

With its third shutout victory in Columbia, Clemson now led the series with the Gamechickens 7-2.

The Chickens had not scored on Clemson since the series had resumed in 1909. Since the series was interrupted between 1903-1908, the Chickens had actually not scored against Clemson since the 1902 game (the year of the postgame riots that led to the series interruption).

The collective score for the three games between 1909-1911:

Clemson’s first Head Football Coach, Walter Riggs, was officially confirmed by the Board of Trustees. According to Wikipedia:

“Riggs' overall record of 6–3 gives him a .667 winning percentage. After decade as a Mechanical Engineering professor, he was named acting president of Clemson Agricultural College in 1910, being confirmed by the Board of Trustees as permanent president on March 7, 1911. He served until his untimely death on January 22, 1924, while on a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with officials of other land grant institutions.”

The Serbian capture of ports on the Adriatic resulted in partial Austrian mobilisation, starting on 21 November 1912, including units along the Russian border in Galicia. The Russian government decided not to mobilise in response, unprepared to precipitate a war.”
