Interstate 40 is a 2,557-mile-long United States highway that runs from the west end at I-15 in Barstow, California to the east end at US 117 in Wilmington, North Carolina, also going through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee. The 420 miles of I-40 in North Carolina travel from the west end at the Tennessee state line in Cherokee National Forest to the east end in Wilmington.

Let's see, I-40 in North Carolina east to the coast or west to the mountains? We'll go west. South Mountains State Park (had to find a state park) is a 20,949-acre park established in 1975. The park is located near Connelly Springs in Burke County in the South Mountains, a branch of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The South Mountains were once a neutral zone for the Cherokee and Catawba Indians in the area. Development of the area began in the 1930s when a CCC camp was established at Enola to construct roads, clean stream beds, and build a forest observation tower. The roads are still in use at the park today. High Shoals Falls on Jacob's Fork River is the most visited area of the park. The park offers 50 miles of trails for hikers and bikers, camping and RV sites, picnicking, and trout fishing on Jacob's Fork River.

Last time I was on I-40 was in a driving rain between Tennessee and Asheville - did not feel comfortable at all with water gushing off the cliffs.

40 - Tim Bourret Served 40 Years in Clemson Sports Information Department

Not every Clemson legend competes on the sports field/arena. Tim Bourret dedicated 40 years to Clemson athletics. A legend in every sense of the word!
Before Clemson:
According to the State:
“Growing up in West Hartford, Conn., Bourret made all-conference in baseball and played in the American Legion World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, a tournament that featured Dale Murphy. But he passed on playing high school football for what he considered a good reason: His team scheduled games on Saturday afternoons, and fall Saturday afternoons in the Bourret household meant listening to Notre Dame games on the radio.”
https://www.thestate.com/sports/college/acc/clemson-university/article214336679.html#storylink=cpy
His love for Notre Dame introduced him to Clemson. According to ClemsonWiki:
“The first time Tim Bourret saw a game at Clemson, he was rooting for the visiting team. As a graduate assistant in the University of Notre Dame Sports Information Office, he traveled to Death Valley for the November 1977 game between the Fighting Irish and the Tigers, the only time Notre Dame has played at Clemson. Thirty-eight future NFL players, including Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana and Clemson receiver Dwight Clark, took part in that game. While it was a thrilling game won by the visiting team, it was the game-day atmosphere that left the biggest impression on Bourret.
Less than a year later he had the opportunity to come to Clemson as assistant sports information director under the legendary Bob Bradley, and he jumped at the chance.”
https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
While at Clemson:
Clemson Tigers.com mentioned Bourret’s tenure at Clemson:
Bourret retired from his position as Sports Information Director in 2018 following 40 years of service to Clemson Athletics. He arrived at Clemson as assistant SID under Bob Bradley in September 1978 and was elevated to an associate SID position in July 1980. He became the director upon Bradley’s retirement in 1989.”

Bourret has been part of some amazing moments in Clemson sports history. Interestingly, however, Bourret missed Clemson’s 1981 National Title clinching victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. According to Anderson’s Independent Mail:
“On January 1, 1982, when Clemson won its first-ever national championship in football, Bourret was covering the Clemson men’s basketball game in Raleigh while his mentor, Bob Bradley, was with the football team at the Orange Bowl.
“I figured well, if we win this one, we will win another a couple years later and I’ll be there for the next one. Thank goodness we did win another one – 35 years later,” Bourret said.”
https://www.independentmail.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2018/07/16/remembering-tim-bourrets-40-hall-fame-seasons-clemson-athletics/786348002/
Tim Bourret, however, was on hand for some spectacular moments in Clemson sports history. That same Independent Mail article specifically cites the following great moments when Bourret with in person to see them:
- March 1980: Clemson Men’s Basketball’s first run to the Elite Eight - December 1987: Clemson Men’s Soccer’s 2nd National Championship (On Bourret’s 32 Birthday) - March 1996: Clemson Men’s Basketball’s “Buckner Jams!” - May 2003: Clemson Men’s Golf’s National Championship - January 2017: Clemson Football’s 2nd National Championship
Tim Bourret’s Recognition:
“Under Bourret’s guidance, Clemson’s sports information office was named to the Football Writers Association of America’s “Super 11” Team five times (2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2017) since the honor’s inception in 2009. The award annually recognizes the top 11 SID offices in the nation for their service in working with media covering college football.”

In another article, ClemsonTigers.com also mentions his personal recognition (from 2019):
“The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today that longtime Clemson Sports Information Director Tim Bourret has been named as a recipient of the organization’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.”
https://clemsontigers.com/bourret-earns-cosida-lifetime-achievement-award/

Still More to Come:
Bourret still remains active in the sports world. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Despite his retirement from his role as Sports Information Director, Bourret still serves as a statistician and on-air commentator for the Clemson Tigers Network and writes for Clemson game day programs and ORANGE: The Experience magazine. He also works for NBC and the Golf Channel as a communications and statistics assistant, recently working the 2018 British Open, Ryder Cup and numerous other tournaments during the PGA’s 2018 season.”
https://clemsontigers.com/bourret-earns-cosida-lifetime-achievement-award/
According to ClemsonWiki:
“Bourret received honorary membership in the Clemson Alumni Association in November 2007 for his 30 years of service to the school's athletic department. In addition to his work as the school's athletic publicist, he serves as the color commentator on the school's basketball radio network, a position he has held for 28 years. He is also a regional voting chairman for the College Football Hall of Fame.
Bourret has edited more than 20 Clemson football publications that have won national awards from the College Sports Information Directors Association. This is Bourret's third book. In 2004, he was author of Tales from the Notre Dame Hardwood, a book on Digger Phelps' Notre Dame basketball coaching career, and was co-author of Basketball For Dummies with Phelps and Sports Illustrated's John Walters in 1997.”
https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Bourret,_Tim
Tim Bourrett will forever hold one of Clemon’s great legacies!! As Kelly Gramlich put it in the Independent Mail article cited above:
“Bourret is the standard by which sports information directors around the country are measured. For 40 years, he took great pride in his work, and it showed. … As for me, I’ll remember Tim Bourret for how he treated people. He was always kind, always professional, and always willing to lend a hand. That is his legacy.”
