Swinney says iPads benefits outweigh the cost
The Clemson football team recently received iPads so they can watch film no matter where they are, a result of head coach Dabo Swinney's seeing Stanford coach David Shaw with one in an airport. What are the advantages? What do the players think of them? Full Story » |

It is so cool to hear about my two favorite college football coaches interacting. I see great similarities in how they have been building the two programs.

Also, in case anyone noticed, Dabo Swinney and David Shaw have the same initials. Kind of a Lincoln/Kennedy kind of thing. Hmm.

Stanford has more $$$ than they know what to do with...

by 2009, their entire Athletic Department became fully endowed. The interest from their Athletic Annuity (600 million +) earned each year pays for all scholarships (380) and all coaches salaries for 35 Varsity Sports.
To give you an idea of how big 600 million is, the next highest know if UNC's at 180 million.
To see Clemson, doing some of the same things as Stanford shows a big commitment from our Administration. Kudos to Dabo & the Athletic department & our donors.

Stanford is in Apple's hometown. Probably got a great deal if not donated IPads for publicity.

the ways in which we're getting an edge? I'm sure there's a lot of copy-catting in big time college football just like in the NFL. Another example - Oregon first used the helmet cameras to see what their QB's were looking at during plays. We copied that. If Oregon would've kept it secret maybe we would not have that idea/advantage? It's interesting to ponder whether it's better to share trade secrets or keep a lid on them. I doubt Saban shares his coaching secrets? Something to ponder.

I'm glad he mentioned the security concerns. The first thing that jumped out at me was what if an opposing coach or player gets their hands on one of these? They would have copies of all your film and plays. If they can erase these things remotely, that is a new one on me but thank goodness. What do you do when one is lost or stolen?!
