Short list of candidates when brownell Fired!

For those saying we can’t get anyone better than brownell. I have came up with a shortlist that would be a significant improvement and I believe anyone on this list would come coach at Clemson if offered alright here is my shortlist.

Richie Riley
Rob senderoff
Baker Dunleavy
Chris collins
Fran Campbell

It would be hard not to find somebody better than Brownell

But the school isn’t going to fire him, because they don’t give a crap about basketball.

Charles Barkley might want to get into coaching and we have a great golf course.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

and have the most wins in Clemson basketball history, as well as setting the Clemson record for best start in ACC play. Super easy! No big deal.

He will be let go

Again, Ms Keller, our average ranking over 12 years is 76th.

Feb 20, 2023, 7:03 PM [ in reply to You're right, it's really easy to have 400 career wins ]

And that average may drop of we lose a couple more games.

Brad hasn't done jack squat. You're delusional.

Good luck at the next mid major.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You forgot to mention the most losses.

Now THAT'S an accomplishment.

Good luck at the next gig, Mrs. B. Seriously. You're not the coolest lady around, but your husband is a good guy, so I wish you guys much success at the mid-major level.

In a P5 "Has Been Basketball Conference" that will be lucky to get 3 teams in the tournament. A conference that used to get 8-10 teams in the tournament. While I'm glad the team hit some new confidence territory, this isn't the year to brag about it. Just lost to a KenPom 275th ranked team. Anyone defending that coaching job is delusional.

You prey on people’s ignorance about college basketball. The 400 wins might be a meaningful personal milestone. But it is not significant with the college basketball coaching fraternity. More than 125 coaches have 500 or more. There are coaches on that list who coached just as many seasons as Brownell. John Kresse got to 560 in 2 more seasons than Brownell has coached. His ACC accomplishments can’t be compared to previous coaches due to conference expansion, more conference games, and a rotational schedule. There is nothing special about him. Adjusted for SOS the only coach worse since Tates Locke is Larry Shyatt. But please, spin us some more yarns.

Thoughts on Greg Buckner?
I googled NBA ASST coach pay and found that the average salary is $300,000. Only 7 make more than a million, with Jason Kidd leading everyone at 1.6 million.
Brownell is set to earn 3 million next season, so that provides an idea of what we can do

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He wants the job

3

Feb 19, 2023, 10:56 AM

He has experience, he has NBA connections, and he's the toughest sob to ever play for Clemson. No one wants to win more the Buck.

He should be at the top of the list.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't you think hiring a coach with zero experience

Feb 20, 2023, 1:13 PM

coaching on the college level is a huge risk?

He has never run a program. He has never recruited.

On the flip side, his NBA experience is a definite plus, as a coach and a player. I think that would resonate with recruits. I also think his love for Clemson matters a lot.

An example of a college head coach who was a former NBA player and NBA assistant before taking a college head coaching job is Jerry Stackhouse. He is well below .500 in his several years at Vandy. Ugh.

I could do that.

Buck has been coaching in the G league, development league,

Feb 20, 2023, 7:41 PM [ in reply to Don't you think hiring a coach with zero experience ]

summer leagues, and the pros. He has all the coaching experience and knowledge he needs. As for recruiting, that's the unknown variable. I think his NBA connection will help immensely and while he isn't a household name, once he gets in a house and shares his story, he'll win over a lot of recruits and a lot of parents.

Most importantly, he will bring that same will to win that he had when he played at Clemson. He's all business on the court and you'll see a team play as hard on defense as any team in the country.

I think Buck is a no-brainer hire. There's risk, but no more than with any other candidate.

Alot like Louisville hiring Kenny Payne.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mentioned Buck a few years ago

1

Feb 19, 2023, 6:08 PM [ in reply to Re: Short list of candidates when brownell Fired! ]

if we do make a move, he should certainly be interviewed. If we're ever going to move up in the ACC pecking order, now is the time. Duke and NC are breaking in new coaches and the feel of the old dynasties is not near as strong. FSU and Miami will soon be hiring new coaches, as will GT. Syracuse isn't far away either. Bennett will be the only real established coach before long.

It is taking a chance to hire a guy with no head coaching, or college experience. If he's brought on, it would be about his character and potential. He'd need a guy with head coaching experience on the bench with him. I could see Boogie officially on the staff with him as well, and he'd need a top notch recruiter. Would take money committed to pay for that type staff.

Another option to me is an experienced guy who may or may not be coaching at the "power 5" level right now. A big splash hire. Regardless, unless we went our normal mid-low major route, and that is the route we've taken for 50 years apart from Barnes, it's going to take a big monetary investment.

Still not convinced we see a move apart from an epoch collapse here down the stretch even if we do miss the dance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would be great for us to try a route like that.

Feb 19, 2023, 7:07 PM [ in reply to Re: Short list of candidates when brownell Fired! ]

I am of the firm belief that Neff has been expanding his outreach in the field though since last season and has candidates in mind and interested should things not pan out as were anticipated this far into the mix. It could be that Buck is one of those. I like the idea of someone with clear cut pro coaching chops and All In on Clemson and what it's capable of in basketball taking charge.

As a poster OP'd earlier, Clemson is light years ahead of where we were in the national spotlight during our last basketball hire campaign. The joy of Clemson has been on full display in prime time, and more folks than ever get it. Our current coach is in no way underpaid for the industry, and we obviously show a long leash, and all the opportunity one could ask for from a brand, stature, location, and wide open slate on the success side of the ledger. The ACC is also in flux, yet the funding and infrastructure is there throughout to keep it among the most competitive in years to come.

We're a great basketball gig in the grand scheme of things.

Go Tigers!
