She may have fumbled that one but she's definitely not in over her head the other 99% of the time. How many threads did you start lamenting the complete idiocy of her predecessor? If the answers zero then we all now know who is trying to do the gaslighting around here.

Is that really what you're saying?
If so, that's pretty silly and pretty sorry. That is 3rd grade school girl gossip logic.
I remember calling out Biden's press sec a few times...so does that mean it's ok for me to call out Trump's press sec too and that you'll value the criticism as a result?

It is funny to listen to all the supposedly rational posters on here totally ignore years of incoherent drivel from one press secretary and then smugly play gotcha when our current press secretary messes up a response. These same people couldn't do her job for a single day but oh boy are they some world class message board posters. Tells you all you need to know about just how reasonable they actually are.

How did she “mess up” ? She just lied and continues to lie on the subject?
Or has she come out and admitted that tariffs are paid by importers?

She didn't say something that came out wrong that she regrets. She lied and she's repeating the lies of her boss. And then she runs MAGA play #7 and goes after the reporter for asking a legitimate and straightforward question.
And yes, the previous press secretary and admin was horrible. BUT THAT'S NOT THE EFF'ING POINT!!! We're talking about the CURRENT press sec and the CURRENT POTUS.
To he1I with the last admin...we all agree. But nothing Biden did excuses any of the BS President Trump is doing now. Nothing.

Not my take at all. I think she’s a true believer and pretty well spoken.
All Press Secretaries sling loads of ########, some better than others.
KJP fed us all the utter BS that Joe was just a marvel of physical and mental capacity and that Biden had done more to secure the border than any President.
I wouldn’t bother listening to much from any press secretary. It’s their job to spin.

straight forward question and her answer was total BS. When she was pressed on it, she took it personally and then went after the reporter/AP.
This is such a clear example of what we're up against now and what passes (at least to some) as acceptable behavior from a press secretary. And the reporter is 100% correct. She needs to have her economic understanding challenged!

are so worried about tariff costs getting passed on to the consumer, but argue the exact opposite when you increase taxes on corporations.
Tariff = Higher good cost ultimately paid for by the consumer. Taxes = Higher good cost ultimately paid for by the consumer.
They are the same end result applied in different ways.
Trump tariff's certain countries and goods and Dems lose their ####. Biden wants to raise increase corporate taxes on EVERY corporation from 21% to 28% and they cheer.
They do the same thing. They both #### consumers.

The amount of taxes we pay is staggering. Adding in higher corporate taxes is just another layer of taking the money from citizens.
Tariffs can be effective, but not how Trump is doing it unless this is just a short term threat to get what he wants.
Tariffs on China should be in place. We buy their ###### goods because they are cheap. We don't need them. If they are going to subsidize real goods (cars, appliance, etc.) with .Gov money and then dump them against domestic products, they will win. Tariff that to put them on a level playing field.
Hell, a t-net poaster bragged about getting their Polestar EV. Polestar is owned by Geely which is subsidized by the Chinese government.

I don't think they're exactly the same in terms of impact on a company...
1
Mar 12, 2025, 11:22 AM
[ in reply to I love how Dems... ] |

of course, that varies with the type of company.
Taxes are levied based on profits. They don't impact EBITDA, but do impact after-tax profits (clearly).
Tariffs impact a company's cost inputs. If it's a tariff on incoming imported material, then it impacts cost of goods sold. If it's a tariff put on by the customer's country, then it impacts the effective price of the goods being sold or hits the customer's cost of importing, depending on which party is responsible for customs clearance.
So an increase in cost eats into the company's operating margin...how much depends on how much the company can pass along to the customer, which is not a given, depending on the competitive layout of the market.
Most ultimate investment decisions, pricing decisions, etc...are based on operating margin and not after-tax profit margin. Not saying it's not considered, but it's not normally the controlling factor, especially in larger companies where the operating unit may not even know the taxable position of the total company (credits, loss carry forwards, incentives, and and and). Heck, even in my company where we have perfect visibility of tax liability in the US...we still mainly focus on EBITDA.
In my thinking, taxes have a bigger impact on longer-term strategy and ultimate cash-flow.
That was a bit long winded...and yes, ultimately the customer "could" see the impact in pricing for either a tax of a tariff, but I would make the case that a tariff has a much more immediate potential impact on pricing.

Maga owner of my company once told me he had his MBA from George Washington, tuned out to be a lie. a couple years later he told me he was both an architect and a civil engineer, it was a ego thing because I'm architect, and despite being the principle owner, was little more than my agent and accountant. But yeah, he is also an architect and civil engineer, told me this with a straight face. I worry how much the big lie has permeated our culture, I should just go ahead and tell people I am a rocket scientist.
